I own an 82' Stars and Stripes that came with a factory hi performance 454/425 Chevy big block and a powerslot. The boat runs awesome and the only issue that I have is that when I am in a "no wake" zone I am constantly shifting the transmission from forward to neutral because if I don't, at idle (800 to 900rpm, won't idle any lower), the boat produces a small wake ripple so, I keep it in check. I have been reading threads about propellers and checked to see what I had. I have an OJ 15 20 CUP 3 blade with an 1 1/8" shaft. I have found nothing about this prop configuration. The low end bite is awesome and totally launches.:D I have to feather the throttle for a slalom skier or I will pull the rope out of his hands. The boat will peg the 50 mph speedos with 6 people in the boat :D and WOT is about 5200 rpm. This is the propeller that came on the boat when I bought it and I've had the boat for about 6yrs. Here is the question. Am I over propped? :( :D

Sounds like the old prop works pretty good. If you go to a lower pitch propeller to decrease the idle speed you will over rev on the end and lose speed as well.

Thanks EJ,
I've been reading about recommended props here for weeks and when I checked to see what I had... it was of a configuration that was different than anything that I had read about. Is this an uncommon propeller? Or just uncommon in my particular application? Thanks again, Rick

Rick - We built that propeller specific for that boat. Have not made many since then either. Very rare.

Your information is what I was looking for! I suppose I'll just keep doing what I've been doing to keep my wake in check! Thanks, Rick

Are you sure you can't lower your idle speed without the boat stalling out? 800-900 at idle seems a little high.

Yes, I am sure and believe me, I have tried! The cam that is in the engine won't allow it to idle any lower without loading up and stalling. It has a big Holley dual feed double pumper carb, 990 rectangular port heads and my buddies tell me that this engine is running like it is designed to run. Rick

No worries.....she'd be a showpiece not a daily tug boat. I'll build a ramp up to the deck that I can use w/ my cane. :D

Yes, factory docking lights and I have yet to see another that has them. This boat was the boat that pulled the ski show at Marineworld in CA. Used to say Enjoy Coca Cola on the bow. Rick

Being that it rips your arms off w/ a 15x20 prop, slowing it down w/ a smaller prop would prolly overrev the engine easily.

By the way, that boat is freakin' awesome!

wgwollet, I am not sure exactly what the engine internals are or if it has ever been apart but, everything that can be seen externally is "top shelf". It also has a chrome/baffled 12 quart oil pan that can't be seen in the pictures. Thanks for the compliment! Rick
