A couple of guys from my office are in Michigan's Upper Peninsula's Two Hearted river area working directly with the Incident Commander and are on a fire line on our nature preserve that the fire has moved onto. A guy from our Upper Peninsula office is working on GPS and mapping issues related to the fire. I've heard this fire was started by lightning.

I'm hoping so too! They are well trained so that's going in their favor. Our guys on the fire line go through the same fire training as the people from the US Forest Service and are part of the Michigan Fire Council. They both do prescribed burns for ecological management each spring and some in the fall.

We had a pretty heavy (albeit short-lived) downpour move through at about 6 last night. It was supposedly strengthening as it moved east. Hopefully it helped out a bit.

At times lately we can actually smell smoke in Marquette. Is it possible that we are smelling the fire in Newberry?

I hear they can smell the smoke all the way up in Copper Harbor. :(

Here is a web page (http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/michigan/preserves/art16975.html)about the preserve that is part of the area burned by the fire. The two fire guys from my office in West Michigan are coming home today for a break and then going back up next week for what is hopefully "mop up" after the fire is contained. Another guy from our Lansing office, who is also on our burn crew, is going up today to to replace them. My organization has close relationships with the DNR and the Forest Service and we work cooperatively on these kinds of things.

Earlier this morning the fire was about 1/4 mile away from the cabin on the preserve where our seasonal and full-time staff normally stay when working on the preserve. Last I hear the fire was moving away from the cabin now.
