I discovered water on top of my pistons three weeks ago. I removed the head from engine to find an exhaust value seat in many piece in the top of the combustion chamber. Ruined the head and scored the cylinder wall +/- .030. Looking for advise from people who have been through this before. Should I rebuild at a local machine shop or buy refurbished marine long block. If refurbished marine long block is preferred where can I get the item? Prostar 190, 1996, Chevy 350, vortec manifold, TBI.

Just curios as to how many hours the engine has?
I think a rebuild would be the far cheaper option. A new engine from DIM is going to run you $3254 + freight http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RB001005H

Engine has 837 hours.

MYMC recommends Jasper engines if you go the replacement route. I would research a rebuild as stated above much cheaper option.

I used Jasper for the replacement in my Durango. I also just came across this website;
Price look pretty good.
We have had great success using Jasper Engines...the warranty they provide even covers labor.

a rebuild will be cheaper but like mike mentioned it's hard to beat the warranty a replacement comes with

I just did a rebuild for my 351W from my 83 S+S. If you have a good machine shop I would recommend doing it yourself. That way you know what your getting. I had to unfortunately replace the block and heads, total cost was $4250. Discount inboard marine 351W was about 4000 with shipping and tax. I have a much better end product than I could have bought with a replacement. Roller cam, Aluminum heads, Hypereuretic pistons, etc... Just my 2 cents.

I just replaced the 351W in my 89 Tristar last summer. The boat was run in Galveston Bay (salt water) for several years before I got it. Ate completely thru the heads, so I got a remanufactured engine at ICT Engines in Houston. $1,100 for a marine long block, dropped it in and ran like a champ. Also replaced the ignition with elctronic, new impellor, reworked the prop, new bushings all told spent $1,800. After 189 hours it still runs great.
