View Full Version : Who's first and when will you de-winterize

I think it was about this time last year similar thread.

So who will be first to de-winterize? I'm planning last week of March if we take out boat to Alabama/Gulf coast over spring break. I'll probably need to put couple of the magnetic block warmers on as that is too early for Indy.

I've already resisted the urge several times......but it's tough when the temp hits 70 degrees for the high one day, then 40 degrees for the high the next...

I've been strong so far:rant:

Late April for me. I have alot of stuff to do before I mess with that.

I'm thinking mid-March. My parents are coming down during my little brothers spring break. Hpoefully it will be nice enough to take a ride. Probably won't get in the water though.

I did it Monday. Ran her for a few hours and put her back in the slip. If the weather calls for a deep freeze, I just have to drain the block.

Not me. As a matter of fact, this time last year I was saying, “I wish I had a boat”.

My boat is allowed to stay in the cave until the end of April. I do want it out a little early for the maintenance but I don’t want it to freeze and thaw a lot.

Boy, don't know if I really want to admit it but...I seldom need to winterize (heated garage and warm climate).

thats ok professor, winterization here means you need a wet suit or perhaps a dry suit.

Mid to end of March. I was skiing in March last year with a wetsuit. This year I got a dry suit for Christmas. I've been busy every weekend doing maintenance. Soon, very soon...

LMAO, there are just a few aren't there. Had the 3rd last night, I am going to the lodge down the road on monday to watch it. Found it was really benificial to see it right after you go yours. Plus I am my son's coach, so I need to learn it well.

Wow, I hadn't gotten to the point of counting them yet. But my coach, who is 84 and still delivers the long form lecture word perfect, will be working with me starting today, I am fairly certain I will have it down shortly.

What is this winterizing you talk about? Been skiing all winter in a wetsuit. Winter for me just means two things:

1. No skiing after work during the week (dark)
2. No 95 degree water

I'll be on the lake tomorrow:D

I dewinterized last Monday and hit the lake. High was 87 degrees. I didn't drain afterwards, but may have to (I'm watching the mercury as we'll se some more 30s at night). It's garaged and it takes a little more than 32 outside to freeze it inside.

"De-winterization" to me means taking off the cover and reconnecting the battery (boat goes in the garage here in California). Although, I'm dreading dropping the $600+ on my 100 hr service...

The ice should melt by April 20th area. Within 1 week the boat will be in the water and we will run at least 1 set.5mm shorty suit with 2mm jacket. This is how bad I wanna go! Cold is only a state of mind. :D

Unforetunately (or fortunately as the case may be) I might not get the boat unbuttoned this year until July! I'm finishing up my degree down at Yale and with crew races and hockey tournaments (I'm on both B-school teams) I don't have a free weekend until May. And then I'm getting married so you know that I don't get a free weekend between wedding stuff and graduation. Thank god dewinterizing is quick so I can go out if I do get the chance. But the cool part is that we're headed to Europe for 5 weeks starting the beginning of June and will be getting out on the water there a bit as we are going to bareboat around the Ionian islands in Greece for part of the trip. So waiting till July to get the MC fired up isn't so bad I guess....

Ice comes out usually in April sometime. We've skiied in March before among the ice chunks. Hopefully it will be an early spring here in Western Massachusetts. I've got a new boat lift I'm dying to set up, and I just did a few tune-up things on the boat I haven't done before and I'm anxious to see if they made any difference in the performance.

[QUOTE=Jim@BAWS]"WINTERIZE" What kind of language is that?

' Winterize' as defined in the Arizona dictionary: Put a long sleeve shirt on instead of a t-shirt so you won't get chilly when your in the weather.

I took off from June until November for that trip to Alaska. Drove from Boston up to Alaska and back via Key West Florida and a few other places that were definitely "not on the way" :D . I put about 40,000 miles on the truck during that time. I was sure glad that was the summer where gas was less than $1.00 / gallon just about everywhere (1998). I still have the truck. Just turned 190,000 miles last night. Still runs great, but is starting to rust and rattle a bit. Still, it's WAY cheaper to keep this one running than to get a new one. As for Fairbanks it was great. We really enjoyed going north up to the Brooks range. It's unforetunate that most people won't head up there to see it themselves. Wide open space for as far as you care to walk. It's weird just heading out into the wilderness with no trails. You can't even compare it to anything in the lower 48. Denali was cool, but the Brooks were way more interesting (and a lot less crowded!) Prudhoe Bay was disapointing. It's a big industrial wasteland and you can't even get to the water without paying the oil company for a 'tour'. On public land no less. I understand keeping people out of the working areas for safety reasons, etc... but gating off a large portion of public land with nothing on it is ridiculous. I was fortunate the year I was there that there were NO mosquitos. I don't think I pulled out the bug spray the entire time I was in Alaska, the Yukon or the Northwest territories. Apparently they had a weird thaw/freeze cycle that spring that killed most everything off. Not that I was complaining!

I can relate to that, we where skiing on Lake Powell over thanks giving. The water was 67 deg F, weather was a bit chilly out of the water, but we still had many hours of skiing with no one else around!!! We'll be returning this May

Have had the boat out 5 times so far. Was out yesterday getting in a few sets on the new ski, water was a balmy 36.3. Going again this Saturday in St. Louis if anyone's interested.

According to the USCG you have something less than an hour at that temp....

Yeah I went to Fairbanks twice. Actually to Eielson AFB. North of the base their is a large bombing range the AF uses. As is the norm for all ranges they have to be cleared and the targets rebuilt every so often. So they send in EOD guys to clear the duds. We just blow them in place. The range is in a really isolated location, no roads. We took helicopters in and we sling loaded SUS-V's (big sweedish tracked vehicles that go in water, anything) and Go-tracks (another similar vehicle) with camping gear, explosives and all other equipment. We would spend 2-3 weeks out clearing the targets. Every 3 or 4 days a UH-60 would pick someone up for a supply/beer run. It was really a beautiful place. The only things I didn't like was taking a bath. I was there both times in July but it still hit 40's at night. We camped right on a crystal clear creek. So you lathered up and than dove into the water for a split second and then ran to the fire to warm up. The water was in the 40's it was also our beer cooler! The second thing was the footing. A lot of the terrain looked liked those mushrooms off of the super mario bros game. It was impossible to walk on. Also, we didn't find a lot of ordnance because it would hit the ground and bury under the tundra in the ice. I've got some photos somewhere. A great trip and I got paid for it!

I wear a drysuit w/ some insulated clothes. To put on the ski, soak the bindings with hot water from the hot water shower...do the same with the gloves. Some wear a wetsuit hood, I didn't this past weekend.

Have the rope ready to go, drop in and get pulled up...max time in the water is 30 seconds. Go for a run. Get out, rinse again with the hot water shower. Dry off your hands, feet, and head.

Get in boat, put on stocking cap and sit close to the 3 outlet heater. Not for everyone, but I enjoy it.
