View Full Version : Oil / ATF Recommendation

I've read the threads on oil/ATF. Went to Walmart today to grab supplies. Need a little clarification:

I've got an 88 Prostar 190 (Ford 351 / velvet drive 1:1).

There was no "marine oil" other than 2-stroke. I grabbed Rotella T 15W 40. Is that the Rotella everyone refers to? Is the T significant? It says heavy duty but has little graphics for a truck, construction equip and a car - no boat.

Also grabbed Super Tech high mileage ATF. Says it's for GM and Ford where Dexron III or Mercon is recommented.

Have I got the right stuff?

DUH...
Just reread the posts on the oil and they all say Rotella T.
So, I guess I'm OK on the oil.

How about the ATF?

The ATF you purchased should be fine..................Personally, I used Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF when I had my 98 Prostar...........Quite a bit more expensive though.

Yup, you got the right oil. Rotella-T is exactly what you want for your 351w. I run 15w40 in mine.

The ATF you got should be fine- its certainly not incompatible. Ive spoken to a transmission specialist who says to run Dexron/Mercon, though he prefers Valvoline.

Trickskier, I am not particularly familiar with the transmission on your '98, but Ive spoken with several sources (marine transmission expert, SkiDIM and PCM themselves) who said NOT to use synthetic in my PCM tranny. Although the synthetic ATF's are supposed to be compatible, all the sources said that the stuff was TOO slippery for my wet clutch transmission. I wanted to put the best stuff in, and they all said to use conventional. Anyone who is running or is considering running synthetic ATF should check with the transmission manufacturer for a specific recommendation. PCM told me they were seeing tranny failures around 500-600 hrs in boxes that used the synthetic exclusively.
