Had my depth finder installed last week and its the Lowrence 3800 model. The guy that installed it mounted the unit on the back of the boat (transom). I was out this past weekend and it wasn't reading properly all the time. It seemed when I was under 15 mph it was alright but anything faster then that the reading I recieved was 0.06. Anyone ever get this before or is it better to mount the puck inside the boat. Any insight will greatly be appreciated, the company that mounted it said it was better to mount them on the back of the boat rather than inside

IMO it is much better to mount them on the inside. The "thru-hull" transducer should be mounted opposite the raw water intake (symmetrical across the center of the hull) or back underneath the transmission.
I have never seen a ski boat with a transom mounted depth guage. And don't think it belongs there for several reasons such as 1) drilling holes in the glass to mount it 2) the probability that it will get bumped out of position and/or damaged
I'm guessing whoever mounted it typically doesn't work on inboard ski boats.
I mounted a Lowrance in my last ProStar. The transducer can either be thru-hull or transom mounted. It worked well thru-hull as long as you followed the directions for epoxying it in place

Is the transducer above water when going faster than 15mph? That may be the problem.
I have mine mounted in the bilge area and it reads pretty good up to 30+mph.

Did the installer want to mount a trolling motor on the bow too?

I'm slow, did he mount the depth finder or the sender on the transom?
Is it mounted on the outside or inside of the hull?
Mine is mounted near where the drive shaft goes through and read at all speeds unless I hit wakes. The air creates a "boundary" for the sonar and then the reflection says the bottom is very close, hence your reading of 0.06

He mounted the sender on the transom, drilled the hole to run wire as well. The bracket sits just about water height! He said he would fix it and move it if needed

OMG, so it is mounted on the outside.
Normally on ski boats it is just glued to the bottom of the hull in the back 1/3 of the boat but ahead of the prop.

So where is the proper place to mount the puck
- where the drain plug
- flat spot in the back of the boat where tranny shaft exits the boat

Yes, my paddle wheel and puck are mounted near where the shaft goes through the hull. I think one on left and other right.
Both have worked well in that position and generally seems to be a good spot. Weight of the boat keeps that part in solid contact with the water and ahead of prop issues.
Was it a Mastercraft dealer that mounted your sensor on the transom?

What about this thread don't I understand. http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=18063&highlight=transducer
Unfortunately no one else responded to the thread about mounting it inside the hull as a shoot thru and now you are experiencing problems. I wish I could help you out now, but........................... :( :o
