View Full Version : Footing Speed?

Just wondering about footing speeds...

Do they change depending on boom/long line?

I'm thinking of giving footing a shot at some point and would like to know what I should have the wife drive speed-wise.

Also, the guy I bought my boat from gave me his pylon boom as well, but I may be missing a part. I put it all on: pylon adapter thing, curved boom with gunnel saver thing, boom extension piece with cables, but the cables end with a shackle. I think I'm missing a piece to wrap around the bow of the boat that would connect to the shackle. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

The shackle hooks to eye on the bow. The same place your trailer winch hooks.

You can see on the pic. of my boat below.

For the boom, take your weight and divide by 10, and then add 20 you'll be in the ball park. I'm 200 lbs, so usually foot around 40 mph. With really good form you can go much slower (add 15 instead). For the long line it's usually best to add a couple more mph because you don't have "help" from the boom. Have fun, it's a rush!

Does the cable seem short, or not reach the bow eye? If that might be the case and it's off the same boat you bought from the friend, the only thing that could be wrong is the boom is possibly turned the wrong way or the cables need adjustment (they should be coiled up inside the long padded tube).

OMG 40mph! Thanks for the info. I would have probably never been able to get up because I was thinking 30 or so. I guess footing really burns the petrol as well.

Thank you so much for the picture! It clarifies everything for me. I was wondering if the boom was supposed to be parallel to the water and it looks like no. When you're on the boom, I suppose the cables get pulled tight. I didn't want to hook to the bow eye because I thought the stress would be too much in a lateral direction on something that was designed for longitudinal stresses, but once again, I'm just too worried about hurting my dreamboat.

Thanks again for the help!

I'm at 190# and I prefer 38. We're all going to be in that general area speed wise.

Boom height will vary depending on it's use and even then, there is personal preference involved. I have mine high like 03 35th's boat when using the short line/5 foot rope, but if you just want to hang on to the boom itself, shoulder high works well. Barefoot International makes a height adjuster that works slick for this - pull the pin and put the boom at whatever height you want it!
