What is the rule of thumb for spark arrester maintenance? Do you need to periodically replace them or just clean them? What is the best way to clean one?

It's stainless mesh and aluminum. Clean it with carb cleaner or in a parts washer. Just do it at least once every year.

To add to Jim's post, in the past he has elaborated on the use of carb cleaner, saying get the spray, and work from the inside-out.

/soaked mine last time. Spray would've been far less time consuming on the dry time.

Ya know, I don't think it is. Didn't the LT-1s use paper flame arrestors?

Probably, Doug. Although Dave's in Spokane has a K&N. Rinse it out, re-oil it & drop it right back in.

Word of caution when cleaning the flame arrestor with carb cleaner. Don't make the mistake I did and clean the plastic cover that goes on top of it with the carb cleaner. :uglyhamme It discolors the plastic. I thought it would be a quick and easy way to clean the belt dust from the cover, which it did but now the cover has light and dark spots.

Too bad about your plastic cover, Brian. I could see myself doing something like that in a heartbeat.

By the way, what is everyone's feeling on the MC plastic cover over the spark arrestor? Mine is still on, but I've seen many people take their's off. Is there a performance benefit to removing it? More airflow possibly?

I keep mine on for looks. I guess it gets enough air.:twocents:

Mine was gone when I bought the boat. The few I've seen look like decoration at best.

I just had to take mine off because the new intake raised everything up and clearance is minimal. Got one of those fancy low profile flame arrestors from skidim, and now I can't bear to cover it up.

The previous owner removed mine as well.

Jimn I think they are talking about the plastic cover that is over the arrestor

I can't remember, but isn't that the "engine shroud." The shrouds for the predators turn up on ebay from time to time.
