89' Tristar fuel gauge...

The fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank and it ran out of gas, any idea on what to look for? The needle stays pegged for what I would guess is 1/2 a tank. I am not sure if it would be the float or a wire, any advice is appreciated.

Replace the sending unit with the part #0512 from Skidim, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1088
It's a 1/2 hour job if you follow the installation instructions.
