We went to a concert last night. (Some of the kids on this site may not even know who these bands are:rolleyes: )
At the concert were
Joan Jett, Stray cats, The pretenders, Reo Speedwagon, and ZZ top.
Good times.
Have you been to any recently?

All those bands at the same show? Interesting, eclectic, cool. Did ZZ Top play much of their old, pre-electro/disco music?

REO Speedwagon played in our town recently. I didn't go to the show, but I was on the plane they flew in on the night before - sat next to the singer. It was a little commuter prop plane - I guess the days of flying around on a private jet are over! ("glory days...")

I saw the Smithereens last weekend. Would love to see the Pretenders. She obviously has something against the "golden arches".
There was a logo on the wall behind stage she made some "references" to. Not sure what that was all about.
She made them "cover" it before going on stage.

I've been to lots of shows, but none lately. My half brother is a sound engineer and used to work with the ZZ guys a lot way back when and before then (first album and with Billy in the Moving Sidewalks). I also got to have a drink with Dusty at a bar in Houston called Lizards a few years ago.

Ask me again when it's not summer. I haven't lived there in six years and don't tend to go down there much in the sweltering season. But to get on topic (somewhat), here are some of my favorites, albeit not so much recent shows in no particular order.

Maceo Parker at the Satellite Lounge around Nov 1996 or so.

Phish's Millenium new year's eve show on the Big Cypress Indian Reservation off Alligator Alley in FL where they played from the stroke of midnight nonstop until almost 7:30 a.m. (talk about blisters on the fingers).

David Byrne at Red Jacket in Dallas 2003.

Rolling Stones, Houston, TX 11th row center Nov. 9, 1989.

Soul Hat some time in September 1992 at Liberty Lunch in Austin.

Blues Traveler at Rockefeller's (Houston TX) April 1992

Dick Dale at the Satellite Lounge 1997

Link Wray at the Satellite Lounge 1997

Ween at the Grenada Theater, Dallas, TX 9/2003

Beck with the Flaming Lips at the Will Rogers Auditorium, Ft. Worth, TX 2003 or 2004.

Prince in Bossier City, LA (June 2004).

Not to rain on the Rush parade, but I distinctly remember liking them a good deal, then going to seen them live when I was in high school and not wanting to listen to them after that. I don't know if I just caught a bad show or what. I didn't even know they were still playing. Didn't the drummer get pretty sick at one point?

For what it's worth, I am by no means trying to bad mouth them. It was just a pretty memorable thing for me and when someone mentioned that they were on tour, I can still remember standing there watching them and not enjoying it. I remember the people that went wth me having a great time. So it's probably just me. But it's not often that I just move away from listening to a band's music after seeing them once. Just a case of memory burn on my part.

Recent Concerts:
- G Love and Special Sauce

Great Shows:
- The Ramones opening up for Pearl Jam in Austin, TX
(PJ played for over 4 hours and I only paid $25 to see both bands) (RIP Ramones)
- The Eagles Hell Freezes Over Tour UT football stadium Austin, TX
(the last time they played before that was when I was 2)
- Toadies open for Violent Femms Smirnoff Music Center Dallas, TX
- Styx Billy Bob's Texas Ft Worth, TX
(this was almost 2 years ago and they were awesome in front of a packed house)
- Crossroads Guitar Festival Cotton Bowl Dallas, TX
This was by far the greatest show I will probably ever see. Buddy guy, BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan (Stevie's Brother), and John Mayer all on stage at the same time. Later on there was Carlos Santana, James Taylor, ZZ Top, Steve Vai, Jimy Page, and Clapton played with most of them. It was like the nexus of the music universe. I really thought that music was going to spontaneously combust.

His wife and daughter died some years ago. I'm sure that put a serious crimp in the band's plans for a while. I do know people that have gone to their shows and came away saying "All they did was play music for 3 hours". Not the showiest band around, just the one with the best dummer on the planet. :) They also had kind of a weird stage presence for a while back then. Lots of weird clothes & stuff. Anyways... I think this last show was the best I've seen from them. Them geezers can rock.

The ZZ and REO show came through here a couple of weeks ago. I'm REAL sorry I missed that one. Haven't seen either of those bands live since the 80's.

I saw George Strait with Tracy Lawrence and Miranda Lambert over a year ago. They were all amazing live. Very long concert...George alone played for over 2 hours pretty much nonstop. :)

I also saw the Dixie Chicks in February. Was not happy with the politics that went on outside the show, but loved the show they put on. Those are 3 very talented ladies. :)

I had been trying to see Mr. Sinatra for years and it just never worked out. The show was everything I had expected and more. Frank Jr. was the band directer for the last few years of his performances. When the orchestra cranked up with "fly me to the moon" all you had to do was close your eyes and imagine the Desert Inn in 1964. I would give anything to have seen the rat pack there, I have seen footage of shows that looked like everyone was having the time of their lives.

There were times during the show that Frank looked back to his son for the lyrics he had sung thousands of times in his life, to me it just meant he loved performing, and at the end of his life he was doing what made him happy.

My date wanted to leave at intermission (we are not married) ;)

Good to see some Rush fans chiming in. I've seen them every tour since Presto in '89, about 7 shows. Always had a hard time getting good tickets, but managed to get 4th row for the upcoming Sept 9th show!:guitar:
Eastie, you should try another show, they really can rock! They usually do a pretty good job of getting in the old material with the new. 3-1/2 hours isn't nearly enough to cover 30 years/18 studio albums. What albums of theirs did you like?
They did take a break in '97 after Neil lost his daughter and wife. Somehow he pulled it back together (after 100,000+ miles on his motorcycle) and got back in the studio for one of their better albums, Vapor Trails. Their latest, Snakes & Arrows rocks as well. Neil's written some great books as well. For them being over 50, and as one of the longest running bands with original members, and only 3 of them, they sure still rock!
Other shows I've seen:
Journey
Boston
REO Speedwagon
REM
Moody Blues (with my Dad-they rocked!)
Neil Diamond (with my Dad-he rocked too!)
Black Crowes
Alabama (girlfriend persuaded me!)
Dave Matthews
Freddy Jones
Bruce Springsteen
Elton John
Who
Stones

My wife caught the last Stevie Ray Vaughn show at Alpine Valley, when he played for Eric Clapton. Wish I'd have been at that one!

Other regrettably missed concerts:
Police (back in the day)
U2 (too much $ now)
Dire Straits
Frank Sinatra
John Mellencamp, back in the day when he was good
SRV
Van Halen (may try to see them if they actually tour)
I think BB King might be playing at our state fair, I may try to see that!

Griff, you listed several favorites of mine.

I would like to see Leppard in concert. thats one I havent caught yet and need to. Phil Collen rips on guitar and I would like to see him live. Great backup singer too. Def Lep has always been a favorite of mine. I have friends and family that have seen them and really enjoyed the show. I saw them on that VH1 Rock Honors thing and Elliot's voice is really starting to deteriorate. he just aint got it anymore. the rest of the band sounds great though. really kickin'!

Foreigner: great band, I would love to see them live, but without Lou Gramm, its really not the Classic Foriegner we all know & remember. he was the integral voice of the band, even though Mick Jones was the musical backbone & driving force. Same issue with STYX, No Dennis Deyoung, therefore its really weak. Ive seen the STYX without Deyoung, and I have seen Deyoung's current solo tour. Deyoung's live show makes the current STYX look like a bad garage band. the quality and accuracy of the music is impeccable, and quite an energentic live show. His new band musicians are top notch. I highley recommend anyone seeing this show.

My girlfriend and I got in on a private acoustic set with Alter Bridge (broadcast live on the radio) a week ago and then got into the private concert they had that evening.. For those that don't know who they are, they are a product of the breakup of CREED and Mark was actually the driving force behind Creed.. The music of this band is just WOW and their lead singer is absolutely unbelievable in range and tone. Having witnessed the accoustic set (40-50 people in there) and then the private show which had maybe 350 people at that, this is a band to watch and if you get an oppurtunity to see them, go.. They will be big..

Went to Jimmy Buffett last Thursday at DTE in Detroit (excuse me, Clarkston) - great show but really just prefer the party in the parking lot. Next time I'm not even getting a ticket to the show - just hanging out in front of the motorhome! Fins up! :toast:

Also went to AC/DC again Sunday night - better show than back in November! I think they are "in shape" (relatively speaking) :D since they've been touring for 9 months now. For their age they still put on one hard driving, in your face, rock-n-roll show! My favorite! :headbang:

My wife bought tickets for Jason Mraz and we went to the show last night................I'm indifferent about this one. It was live music and the band was good, I don't really know Jason Mraz except for the songs my wife plays on her iPod so I'm tired today with nothing really to show for it.

Oh, I have empty pockets to show for it as beers were $8 a piece.

I invited her to come along with me to see Metallica in October and she declined.

Unless you are a fan (or smoke pot), it was an average to below average concert.

Went to the Aspen Jazz Festival this weekend and saw Black Eyed Peas, Elvis Costello, Doobie Brothers and Almond Brothers Band. We had awsome perks (VIP food, high end booze and a great condo). Pea's were good but could have played a little longer, Almond Brothers were just O.K. and played too long (2 1/2 hrs), Doobie Brothers were great and Elvis Costello, just average.
Next weekend we have really good seats (4th row center) and again VIP, but the food wont be as high end or the booze either, but it's free. Acts will be Chicken Foot, Puddle of Mudd and Huey Lewis. This weekend is in my home town, so the lodging will be comfortable and I will have my home field advantage.

What do any of those acts have to do with jazz? Elvis Costello has done some but the rest really haven't.

South Side Midnight Lady or Dark Eyed Cajun Woman are about as jazzy as the Doobies get and I don't remember seeing anyone clain that Night Ranger is jazzy.

Kenny G is NOT jazz. Smooth jazz isn't really jazz, either. It's just usually instrumental music that's a little more adventurous than Muzak.

Agreed, the "Jazz" festival has not been a whole lot of Jazz over the last few tears. There was a group I had never heard of called Umphrey McGee that was kinda jazzy, but I didn't like them. I wouldn't go if it was all Jazz not my stuff. The Telluride Blues and Brews is true to the "Blues" and hard to beat. The Aspen show over the last few years is all about the private sponcers and impressing their rich friends. The Black Eyed Peas was paid for by one private individual from what I heard. I know the name of the person but I won't drop her name, a make up mogel, you would recognize her name.
Next weekend "Rock Jam" will be rock, for sure.

Nickleback at the Gorge in WA...2nd time...amazing show. Funny how some of our friends were like- gee I didn't know they had such "potty mouths" after the show. It's like they didn't even know the band at all. Great show! Go if you can.

Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Puddle of Mud, and Chicken Foot last Sat. Tucker sucked, 38 O.K., Puddle of Mudd surprised me and rocked the joint, even threw in some crazy AC/DC "TNT" and Chicken Foot was just O.K. barely. Musical talent for sure with these guys but all their songs sound the same. We left early and beat the crowds.

Took my wife to SLC yesterday to see Pink for our Anniversary. Drove 300 miles (one way), checked into our $300/nt room downtown and my wife gets food poisoned by a room service pizza. I went to the lobby to get her toast and tea this morning and I see in the newspaper her concert was "rescheduled" just yesterday afternoon to Oct. 29th. Thanks a lot. I won't be coming back, just give me a refund Miss PINK, you suck. Can you tell my wife is the pink fan? and I am not so sure she still is this morning. Stuff happens but when you drive 600 miles for squat, it kinda pisses a guy off.

Wow, that sucks.

And I thought getting rained out of Phish Chicago three days in a row was bad. And we had to walk a couple miles in the rain all three nights and two of the nights they shut it down early. At least I was close to home and we didn't get sick.

Your wife is mad I'm sure. My wife loves pink.

My wife went to the PINK concert here in Nashville and wasn't a PINK fan. She went with some of her girlfriends that love PINK. Came home and said it was the BEST concert she's ever been too. She would love to go back. Good thing is you can probably get your money back easily for the tickets.

Saw that one on the Ryman schedule. That is an amazing hall. Saw Mumford there couple years ago.

Just saw their "Gentlemen of the Road" tour in Troy, OH this summer. Great lineup, very well-run event. Caught a fantastic bluegrass band from Chicago, late night at the Troy Elks Club. Good stuff.

Not so sure on the refund. She bought them from a broker and got "great seats". She has over $700 into them. I would bet we will take a 3-400 bath?
