I'm currently 1-2 years from acquiring my dream boat (a Mastercraft of Course !) and need to buy a boat lift for '95 Mariah I/O. My question is, how specific are boat lifts to the boat ? Will I be able to adjust the lift to accomodate an inboard if it is initially set-up for an I/O.

On most lifts the bunks are somewhat adjustable. The biggest concern is boat weight - lifts are usually sold by the weight of what will be on them.

My father in law has a 6,000 lb lift to be on the safe side. Go with a cradle and set it up to match the trailer bunks. There are very specific support requirements for these boats. I wouldn't use slings or lifting rings.
I go into lifts last season, initially for my 98 Moomba Boomerang and they my MC. I initially bought a cantilever style lift, which I would not recommend. The next lift I bought was a 2600lb capacity vertical style lift. This worked fine for the 01 196 it had previously lifted and my MC. However with people and gas I was over the rating and was a little uncomfortable. Last fall I found 3000lb lift with canopy and bought it for a steal. My recommendations would be to buy a vertical lift with capacity of 500-1000lbs what your largest boat would weigh dry(no fuel). Nadaguides is a quick source for weights. Be patient and weight for a used one I got my newest lift with canopy for less than 50% of new. It should be easy to switch the bunks from your I/O to accommodate an inboard, especially if you have that in mind buying. Jamie
