I am a huge Dennis Kidder fan. I was on a CR7 and moved to a D3 X5 last year. I love it. Kidder's skis are very smooth and predictable. You may want to add them to the list. They have a demo program too you can talk them about.

How about a World Team Comp?

I have an old Dick Pope Jr. Cypress Gardens slalom ski. It's got this beautiful laminated wood, perfectly flat bottom, giant metal fin, and a really nifty adjustable front binding.

I skied it today for the first time (my neighbor gave it to me 5 years ago).
I wouldn't recommend it.

I love those bindings. They are almost indestructable!

And easy to adjust too. One size fits all!

Sorry for the threadjack Cowboy. What ski to pick depends a lot on your ability level and style. Some people love D3's - some hate them. Same with HOs, MPDs, etc. You just have to try some out.

Where in Cali are you?
Cope in Rocklin (East of Sacto) does have a demo program. They carry mostly HO's.

problem is no shops rent locally. that i what i want to do is try different sticks n see. my local shop only carries ho but not in my size.
"frustrating" I tried a new Monza in my size that a friend bought but it has xl bindgs which are to big for me. So i was unable to get a good read.

yeah cope is my local. they did away with mc program. you used to pay $100 try different skis and if you bought rental went to purchase. this yr. they went to $25 per ski rental

softailcowboy
07-15-2007, 06:38 PM
no he is one of my reg. ski mates. 3 of us ski 3 am's wk and then he wouldn't be able to ski. All 3 of us have different size bindings

if cope is your local, you could also try water ski world (near sunrise mall in citrus heights). http://www.waterskiworld.com/
They carry D3, Connelly, KD, Kidder, O'brien
Don't know if they have a demo program

I have the F1. Been skiing it the last 3 summers. Like the ski a lot but have always been a Connelly fan. I went from the Connelly Rocket to the F1 and the change was easy.

I recently went from a Connelly Concept (6+years old) to a new Monza. I course ski mainly. I went from getting some buoys at 28MPH 15off to getting some at 32MPH 15off after getting used to the new Monza at higher speeds. Of course, I still stink, I am just proposing that sometimes a serious upgrade may help. The down side is that the Monza hates going slowly and despises rough water; it is a less-forgiving ski and might be hampering my progress since I am not a tuned, repeatible racing machine. The first time I "tried" the monza, I hated it. Make sure whatever you do, you get enough trial time for getting used to whatever you are testing.

I dont think there is an absolute "better" answer. Each skier will find his/her style (and skill level) more optimized on one or another. Read HOs site about S8 versus Monza.

EDIT: added "and skill level" with style

Shepherd did a nice comparison of the System 8 vs. the Monza last year courtesy of MYMC supplying the demo ski's IIRC. I searched for the thread but didn't find it. I'll keep searching, but maybe someone else will find it.

Oh yeah. Forgot about this. EXCELLENT review. Thanks for reminding us.

EDIT: I want to second Shep's findings about the monza...If I dont get it just right coming out of the turns (90% of the time not right), I have to throw in the towel on getting any more balls. I find the "digging in" to be my normal mode of failure.

Ha! I'm still trying to tame this beast. My skiing has improved - starting to venture into 32 off - but sometimes I wonder if another "more forgiving more predictable" ski would have helped me progress faster. I'm keeping the faith though...

I am still fighting with just getting my first EVER pass. Less than 32 MPH produces a thrashing wake on my 205. 32 and faster is simply too fast. When I can get my turns right I get so close at 32. I am just not predictable enough. On any one day, I can do 3 good ons turns and three good offs turns. I just cannot do them in the same pass. I am kinda stuck here. Would you dump/trade the ski if you were me?

Boy, you were up early!

I'm no expert so I won't recommend you ditch your Monza for something else. I'd like to try a different ski with a more forgiving reputation to see how it works but unfortunately there are no local demo opportunities in my area. I told JohnE that I heard the F1X is a more stable and predictable ski. Turns out he has one. Maybe John can tell you more about that ski. A guy on our lake has an F1X - he runs 32 - 34 mph, 15 - 22 off, and looks pretty smooth on it.

DBR

I just bought the F1X, love it so far. It is a little more forgiving with its wider shaped design. I'm just an old guy trying to stay in shape.
