View Full Version : 2005 MCX: 15W-40 vs Dexron III for tranny???

I've got an 05 X-Star with an 05 MCX engine. Specs call for Dexron III for the transmission. My local dealer sold me the following saying it is now what MC recommends... Chevron Delo 400LE SAE 15W-40 (Low Emission CJ-4). This is motor oil... but they swore it was best for the transmission. I seem to remember someone writing it was due to a knocking noise.

Anyone know the deal on this? Or maybe someone has used successfully?

I wanted to verify prior to using just in case they made a mistake.

Thanks. ~Jeremy

Actually, your MasterCraft owner's manual specs calls for 15W40 in your transmission. So does the Indmar manual for your model-year. Not Dexron.

On my ZF Hurth 630 V-drive, I use the same oil I put in the engine - whatever brand that happens to be, based whatever name-brand I happen to find - usually Rotella T 15W40. I used that oil in both engine and transmission last time I changed those fluids, but the Delo 400LE SAE 15W-40 you mention meets those same specs and would be perfectly acceptable.

I called Indmar about this same issue. They told me they went to 15W-40 Motor oil to reduce noise. Like Bigmac said use the same oil that you use in the engine and you will be fine, no matter what brand.............Shell, Mobil, Chevron.............Etc..........:D

I should mention that the first time I changed my transmission fluid, I was expecting ATF and was a little freaked when I found engine oil. I made a lot of calls about that.

check the sticker on the top of your tranny, mine takes 15-w40 even though the manual says ATF

2004 manual says 15w40.

Well it then comes down to which manual, I know that between the boat manual and the one for the tranny one says ATF and one says 15-w40

The old ZF Hurth manual says Dexron for the 630V V-drive transmission. The MasterCraft owner's manual say 15w40 in two places re: transmission oil change, and the 2003-and-newer Indmar manual says 15w40. The 2004 MasterCraft manual has a misprint where they label the ZF Hurth V-drive as the G30V. It's actually the 630V (Simplicity number) or Hurth-labelled as VF-63IV, which is the number you'll see on your transmission ID plate, right below the "Use 15w40" sticker...

Ill take your word on it, I know I read both in different places, that sticker works for me though.

In the old days, the differences between Dexron and Type F were sacrosanct, and woe betide the auto mechanic that put Dexron in a Ford. I had that preached at me by my boss endlessly, but I still don't really know what would have happened.

These boat transmissions are very simple mechanisms by comparison. They have no torque converter or valving - basically just some gears and a clutch plate. The fact is that they are so simple, it probably matters very little what you put in them. As long as it's slippery and has any degree of shear stability, it will likely work fine.

Please take that as an observation, not advice. I still plan on following mfgr's recommendations.

2004 manual says 15w40.

My 09 manual says 99% biodiesel and 1% ethanol? Must be a misprint :D

Does Indmar/Mastercraft recommend oil instead of ATF for a 99 Maristar 210VRS, with the ZFHurth?

Does Indmar/Mastercraft recommend oil instead of ATF for a 99 Maristar 210VRS, with the ZFHurth? The Indmar website has two downloadable owner's manuals, one for pre-2003 and the other for 2003 and later. IIRC the pre-2003 manual recommends Dexron.

The earlier and later ZFHurth transmissions are the same, as I recall, MC recommended that if you find your transmission noisy, then swap out the ATF for oil and it will reduce noise, no matter the year. I think MYMC has the service bulliten on his site.

I personally wouldn't care about the noise, just that the oil makes changes so easy.

May be a dub question, but it came to mind just now.....Anbody running synthetic? Thoughts on that going in the tranny?

Here is the scoopon oil for the trans. All ZF/Hurth gear reduction transmissions get 15W40.The 1:1 units get Dexron ATF. I have attached a copy of a Service Advisory regarding that subject.

I was just curious. I am running Syn in my engine so was just curious if that would be an option for the tranny as well.

The synthetic 15W40 should be fine.
