I spend a lot of time reading the forums on wakeboarder.com (I'm not a memeber), and I often wonder why Mastercraft is always critizised compared to the other brands - BU,CC,etc. A lot of people seem to think that Mastercraft is way over priced and not worth spending the extra money on compared to the other boats. I realize I'm asking this question on MCs website, but I'd be interested in everyone's response.

Hard to say from here. Have you asked how many of them have MC boats and what their skill level is? Otherwise, it may be the Ford vs Chevy vs MOPAR thing. The thing is, most have GM motors with carbs(aside from PCM and pre-'94 Indmar), TBI, MFI and newer technologies so based on which method of fuel delivery or control, so goes the price for the drive system. Beyond the drive, it comes down to fit & finish, accessories, technology, wake, driveablilty and styling at whatever price they ask.

Uhhh, jealous or envious :cry: of MC owners is the likely cause of the undue criticism!

Next question, please! :D

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one. Drive 'em. Ski behind 'em. Pull the trigger.

I go with "the Ford vs Chevy vs MOPAR thing."

I suggest driving a 20 years old Mastercraft.
Then you'll understand why they cost a bit more!!!

i used to think the same thing, mastercraft overpriced just because of the name . my mc is my third boat, brendella, mb , mc. out of the three my mc is by far the best . just driving it on the water is like comparing a toyota to a mercedes. no vibration , everything is tight and quite, no wood rot. i dont feel that they are that much more than other brands unless you price out moomba and other budget boats.

It's all a matter of opinion. I skied and drove an American Skier for years. My cousin was a dealer for Amer. Skier and later bought the company. I was sold on the thought that it was the best and nothing else compared. I even used to refer to MasterCraft as MasterCrap. (I hope I don't get kicked off for that) Now that I own a Maristar, I can appreciate the quality in the workmanship and technology that goes into each boat. Handlaid fiberglas and attention to detail does mean a lot. Each owner will tell you that their's is the best. As for wakeboarder.com I read that forum as well and you have to consider that most of the people on that board don't own their own boat. It's their parents boat and their just along for the ride. If they actually owned a boat they might understand things like resale value and quality construction and not just a kick a$$ gelcoat.

When I was looking for a boat, I had a budget of $17k & wanted a boat that would perform well enough to do Around the Boats & have a descent wake. I drove a lot of different boats & ended up with a '94 205. The boat performs, period. CC in that price range drives like a truck. 'Bu has a Sunsetter that will drive nice, but they haven't reached that price range yet.
I wonder how many of the guys on that site actually bought their own boat.

I own that 20+ year old MC that Andre refers to. The boat is as solid and fun to drive/ski as the first day I took it out. I could have purchased a new Malibu for less than I paid for my one year old MC but I'm glad I didn't. I can't speak for the newer boats but the older vintages have certainly proven themselves.

a few thoughts (some already mentioned...)

a. No experience with tournament boats;
b. Age - No responsibility in paying for or maintaining their own boat;
c. With modern construction capabilities and CAD design, most competitors are catching up.

At the end of the day, IMO a majority of the "inferior" boats of the past are much better than they were before. Even the price point boats by Moomba are leaps and bounds better than most tournament boats made 10+ years ago.

To me, it boils down to personal preference, resale value and marketing. IMO, MC and CC are the top dogs in all three with the others following closely behind.

MC summed it up best in an add several years ago; "own it or envy it." Enough said.

It always kills me when a CC owners says that MC is over priced...they haven't had any new technology in forever.

Correct Craft isn't really cheap either!
Actually i think a 196 Ski Nautique is more money then a 190!
My second choice for sure.

Well, CC must be doing something right. The JD Power ratings across the board are first-rate. MC has done a lot on the 280 /240 hulls as well as the X-star, but I wonder if some of the other hulls are getting dated?
CC has added a 'hydro-gate' (like Tige's taps) in the last few years, MC appears to be avoiding this technology..

I do think it's the Lexus / BMW kind of thing - the arguments are endless.

I think the question is more complicated than what we are talking about.

I challange anyone to find a better quality boat than what my 1995 205
was. But my 01 190 is a different story. Quality changes over time.
I can not speek to the quality of the new boats.
I wish I had my 95 back.

It all came home to me yesterday. On my way home from the lake yesterday, I stopped for some gas. I had two sets of people come over to me an simply have a fit over my boat like it was a newborn baby. When you can elicit consistent high praise for a 12 year old boat, it's got to say something.

I think you have all summed it up in one way or another. The attention to detail gets people not only to buy an MC but it gets them to buy them again and sell the old one to a friend who wants something better than the POS he's driving. Top to bottom nothing but the best is what goes into 'em and in return you get nothing but the best feeling when someone notices a "12 year old baby" and when you sell it. :smile:
