I have been drooling over that house and dock house.
I am awaiting the call to tell me I won it.
I plan to live in the dock house and rent the big house out to pay the taxs.

That dockhouse is way too cool. I can't even believe they were allowed to build it. No way in he11 you could get permits to put a structure that big on a dock in WA, much less the sewer lines.

That house is on our nearby ski lake (not the best ski lake, just the closest). We watched it being built and registered for just about everyone in our family every day open to register. My plan is to keep the boat house, sell the main house, and somehow keep an easement. The amazing thing is that I've seen a bigger boathouse on that lake. They're really starting to build it up. You can still get afordable lots on it, too.

It is getting so much more difficult to get approval for an enclosed structure over water. However, you should see some of the boathouses on Lake Raburn where a few TMC members ski. WOW!

Interesting bit of trivia, if you win the dream home, you don't own the property. The city of Tyler owns all the property on West Lake Tyler (old lake). You can own property on the east lake (the two lakes are connected by a small channel). The "owners" on the West Lake have something like a 100 year lease from the City. Yet, they still require property taxes. Interesting.
We built our boathouse on a different lake, but we did not seek permission to do so after receiving that advice from other recent builders. We'd have been asking for trouble. The one person who did go through the proper channels was held up for a year or more while they created paperwork (didn't have any forms b/c no one ever bothers to ask).

We bought our "Dream Lot" last year, on a lake in Fla.
Yet to start building, maybe this year. :friday:

The boat houses on the north Georgia lakes often rival the home in terms of size. In almost all cases they match the home in architecture, material, etc. I'll put some pics up this summer.

Please Do!
There are a few well done boathouses on Lake Austin too, if you dare to dodge the wakeboarding traffic to see them.
Would you guys please quit taking pictures of my new house?!

Yeah, I read that in our local paper online this morning. While it stinks to win something and become burdened like that, it's the harsh reality of one of life's two certainties---death and taxes.
Just shows that a fool and his dream home are lucky to get paired up together to begin with. Just sell it dude. That's our home lake, and I'm here to tell you that (a) there are nicer houses and boat houses and (b) there are less expensive lake front homes nearby.
What I'd do. Keep it a year and seek an extension on the taxes. Not run the electricity much. Sell it for big profit. Reinvest the proceeds in a new home to seek some sort of tax protection on the gain and try to pass the rest off as a long-term capital gain so I could be taxed as little as possible. My knowledge of tax law is limited because they changed most of it a few months after I took the class.
Of course, the above is just me talking out of my arse. Bottom line, I'd consult an accountant, sell it, pay my taxes, and enjoy my windfall after taxes. When I was entering that sweepstakes, I was pondering selling it.

I wouldn't even consider keeping something like that.. i could never afford to pay the taxes on it.. its too bad you try and help someone out by giving them their dream home.. then the government just goes and hoses them royally..

Yeah, it stinks, but that's reality. He could still could be better off than before if he'd just sell it. So many nice places on that lake for very affordable prices.
