My son wants to hang onto the boom and learn to ski ... he is 2 1/2 and about 36" tall ... so I need a small pair of skis, I thought that I had once seen a website for teaching young kids (gear, etc ...) anyone know of a good source as I do not/will not have him on skis that are too long and risk getting him hurt ... TIA - Casey
Get a skimmer.

Tex, would you have him put his feet in and hold the boom? Or should I have him use the handle on the skimmer?
I put my son on it standing up and holding onto the handle. I just reeled him out off the plateform. I could hold the rope up and keep the tip up and out of the water. You have to let him out quick at first to get him over the rooster tail.
I second the skimmer idea for behind the boat. Both of my girls popped right up on it and went forever.
I have both a skimmer and a very small pair trainer skis that my girls have out grown.
Skis are a little over 3 feet long and tied together, they are in excellent condition. The skimmer has gotten alot of use over the years....my youngest loved it!

so, we started out our skiing lessons yesterday with my little guy ... understand I am not pushing him to ski at all, he just wants to put skis on ... so, we got him a little wetsuit at the new mastercraft dealer for $50 bucks (nice pro shop guys www.mastercraftinw.com (http://www.mastercraftinw.com) ) ... and when it was 95 degrees out yesterday we started practicing ...he will not let us start the boat, but he did put his skis on standing on the teak and swim out (with me) to the boom and hold on .... we did this about 6 times and then everyone was ready for lunch:) my plan is to keep trying until he wants the boat to pull him up and just get him comfortable with the water ... also, I need to adjust the boom a bit as it was the first time setting it up on the mini tower

so, when you get hungry you just ask the driver for some CHIPS ... also, you will notice in the background of pic 4 there is boat on the left ... the sheriff stopped to watch and then pulled over the next thre boats that drove by about 30' away from us ... anyway, thanks for the comments guys ... it will be a work in progress, I just don't want him to get scared of the water, even if he just gets good at putting on his skis and going out to the boom I will be extrememly thrilled
JD got up with the rope in his hands yesterday. We used the skis that have the bar between them. This helps them keep the skis under control while floating in the area. Cool day!

great .... I started my kids about then two with the ski skimmer. swim out about 10-20 yards and have your wife pull him in on the rope ... will let get the feel of it. I then used the boom with a rope over the end to the ski .... had them in the ski on the platform and the boat in a fast idle then heped them (that would be a gentle push) off the platform. With the kids skiing next to the boat, they were not afraid and I could pull them right back in. I had my daughter skiing like this before her 2nd birthday. One suggestion would be to put ropes on those skis so they stay together. One last comment ... be careful as you are about to loose your own ski time!

I would like to have some of the skis with the bars between them but I haven't found any local (appx 36")... X2, if you want to part with yours for a season or permanently let me know, of if someone has some in their pro-shop please send me a PM and I will order them, I see that HO makes a really small size, but they are not stocked around here, so the shop would have to order them first and that always seems to take a while ... TIA

Not that hard to make.
yeah, but the skis he has on are 4' and they don't belong to me so I can't shorten them, so I ideally would like something closer to 3' new or used ... the skis I learned on are in the shed (JCPenney skis with the old school bars - rope and some plastic U's) but I was 5 so the skis are a lot larger ... I do think that the bars would be a big help:)

Another vote for ski skimmer. I can run in the shallow water and pull fast enough for a 4 y/o to get "up" momentarily and get a feel for it, he thinks that's really a hoot - it's how we started him last summer and he went behind the boat soon after.
We put his Mom in the water to push his butt up, and pulled him behind the MC with an older bro holding the handle on the other end of the line ,worked great. Have boom but didn't use it with the skimmer due to the handle setup.
Also ordered HO hotshot trainers for the next older kid, they have the removable bar. Got both from Overton's on the same order.
Great stuff, have fun and good luck!

There's a Bob Sked on ebay right now. Do a search for "water sled." He'll love it. Last I saw, the bid was at $48. He can start out sitting or kneeling, then transition to standing.
