--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1987 Mastercraft 190 Prostar with a Indmar 351 engine and a Holly carburator which was just rebuilt. It was running fine last season and now it sputters, hesitates and occasionally dies while ideling or kicking the throttle down. The rpms are about 650. Sometimes it's difficult to start. If I go anything higher than an idle, it runs fine. Is it just bad gas (water in gas) or maybe the choke sticking ( i checked this and it appears fine)? Any ideas?

P.S. I changed the fuel filter, the oil filter and the water separator filter and replaced the distributor cap and points.

Try bring your idle up to about 750.

my '87 idles around 450 rpms, so i don't know about increasing it that much

really, I would think that was to low. Shows how much difference there is between a 87 and a 04. Mine idles about 750

My owner's manual lists the "idle in gear" rpm for the standard 351W at 600--800 rpms.

For $6, it might be worth running a little Sea Foam through the carb (1/2 can) and 1/2 can in the tank.

I guess my tach could be wrong...but it tachs out @ around 4400 so I was assuming it was correct

The idle screw (small spring under it) is on the linkage (port) side of the carb and the idle/air adjustment are the 2 screws on each side of the carb behind the front bowl. 800-900rpm in neutral and 650rpm at idle in gear, on the 4160.

See if fuel is poring down the secondaries at idle - this will cause those problems. Maybe there's a little dirt making the float stick after the carb rebuild.

Good point. I wouldn't be surprised to find that the floats were not adjusted properly during the rebuild especially if new floats were installed. If that is the problem it's pretty easy to fix by adjusting the float level.
