My dad and I are looking at buying an x-9. My brother is a big wakeboarder while the two of us are course slalom skiers. How are the slalom wakes on the x-9?

The X9 is the same hull as the Prostar 209 w/ ballast and a tower.
"This wide-body direct-drive only takes a slight step down in wakes from its high-performing ProStar siblings, the 190 and 197. Although spray may be an issue at really short line lengths, the 209 ranked above average in almost every aspect of our tests, from impressive wake size to a manageable bump at 22 off."
"The X-9 tournament-certified hull fills its niche best as a intermediate skier's boat, catering to those at 15 to 32 off, at speeds of 30-34 mph. At shortline you may experience some spray, and you'd be better served to check out the X-7."

We wakeboard and free surf behind my 197. I just add a FatSAC under the rear seat and three very attractive female to the sun pad. Then when we are done with that I empty the SAC and put the above mentioned ladies in the front. Porblem Solved.

I agree with the above comments - if you (your family) ski more than you wakeboard - get an X-7.

Also look at how many people you will be taking out on each trip. I'm a family of five. So, even though I preferred the wake of the 197/X7, the extra size of the X9 makes our outings much more enjoyable. You give up a little on the ski wake, but there are trade-offs with everything. Plus, the X9 produces a much better wakeboard/surfing wake than the X7.

I mean sure if your good enough get an X9 its a family boat that is really good. But if I were in your fix which I sorta was I would consider the X14 or X7. I agree the X9 isn't any 94 PS(T)190 but it does well. I like all the space and storage.

ont thing to keep in mind though, you can always add weight to make an x7 a good wakeboard boat, but you cant do anything to the x9 to make it a good slalom course boat.

I had an '02 197 and an '04 X9 ... 197 has a much better slalom wake ... its not bad but if you're competive you're going to be much happier with a 197. Spend a couple hundred bucks and buy a big fat sac and your brother will then be happy too.
On the other hand, I just got a X14 ... it rocks!

my brother can still pull flips off a 197 w/ a mini tower and one ballast bag in the back ... so I think the 197/X7 works fine for a wakeboarder ... and since it is my boat payment I could really care less:)
The 209/X9 is a great all around hull, I skied one for 2 years and really enjoyed it ... I suppose you shold really try one in the course to see if it is adequte for you and your dad, as it is such a versatile hull that you can use on larger bodies of water ... when it gets choppy my 197 heads for the dock:(

While I have not skied a 197 hull, I can give my opinion on the '03 X-9 in relation to the 2000 Prostar 205, and 1989 Prostar 190 wakes (which I have also owned). The 9 is superior in my opinion - even if it is wide, it is soft.
The wakeboarding wake will need additional ballast to allow it to compete with the X-1 (aka the old x-2 and x star). I have plumbed three additional bags and ordered custom bags to replace the old stock bags in mine.
This is a great cross over boat and will keep the entire family happy. There are a couple used 209/X-9s at Boat House Marine in Roots Town, Ohio.

Either way you can't go wrong. After all it is a MasterCraft!

Bottom line, don't buy it if you haven't skied it.

I would not buy the x9 if you are serious at all about slalom. It will be too limiting and there is nothing you can do about it. The 197 or x7 can be made to work for your wakeboarding brother. I skied behind the x9 once and the wade was big and hard. I am lucky enough to be in a position to be choosy at this point so I will not ski behind it again.

Go X-14
We like to do some wake boarding but primarily slalom, but have the whole family thing going. The X-14 Solves the concerns. Everyone is happy. I also had a 1997 Pro Star then a 04 209--Go X-14 if you are a little more in the slalom game. Killer boat
