View Full Version : where do you mount...
I'm a new owner and new to the site, so first off how the hell are ya...
I just got my hands on a 1987 prostar and have many questions. She's got great bones, but no bling. I'm planning on adding a tower and stereo.
Where have others mounted their tunes? There isn't much space in the cockpit, so I was thinking about the passanger side gunnel for the deck and an amp under the bow...
Any suggestions? Pics? Show off your stuff.

Welcome. Doing fine, thanks for asking.
I know there was a thread about stereo mounting in the maintenance section. It's probably a few months old, but I recall it having some good pictures and the pros and cons of various mounting locations.
Make sure to get some pictures of your new boat up soon as many, myself included, would love to see them.

Check out the photos in my gallery for some ideas. I have a 1984 so the design is slightly different but the options should be similar.

The location that was used when the stereo was put in by Mastercraft is on the dash just under the rearview mirror. You would have to mark it and cut out the fiberglass if it has never had a stereo before. I am getting ready to do the same thing to my '88.
Right on...
I hadn't thought about under the mirror.
Thanks for the mounting tips and techniques!
I'll work on the pics east tx.

Welcome aboard, DUDE!!
I have an 87' and will take some pics this evening when get home. Stereo is mounted under mirror and the boat has 4 speakers. We don't use the thing and some of the speaker holes are empty, but it will give you an idea!!

Here is a start, you can see the stereo under the mirror.

I have an 87 but don't have a stereo in it but agree with others that the place to put it is under the mirror. The 87 is a great boat. Hope you enjoy it half as much as I have enjoyed mine.
Welcome aboard.

My brother had an '88 for years & the stereo was always mounted right under the mirror in the middle. But then it always took a good dousing whenever the bow was subbed underwater. Seems like he went thru 3 or 4 decks in just a few years. Might be a good idea to put an enclosure over it.

OBTW... most people that have boats this age will recommend replacing the points with electronic ignition to improve reliability and reduce maintenance. Might be something you want to look into.
Thanks again for all the good info.
As I said this boat has good bones... it is a mastercraft, but I need to do a bunch of maintenance and upgrades man... e-ignition is on the list.
I think the previous owner towed this thing with the Exxon Valdez. I spent yesterday on my back scrubbing what I thought was clay from towing on a wet dirt road. As it came off SLOWLY I recognized the goop on the boat and trailer for what it was. Freak'n mess. Like an oil slick man.
They call that sweat equity.... or sweet depending on your wallet.

I couldn't find a small enough waterproof housing that would fit under the mirror.. so I went w/ this.. I thought it would get in my way, but it's not too bad at all.. I don't have any pic's of the speakers.. but I put two 6" 's at the back (factory location), two 4" 's in the dash (took the windshield off to install them)...

I would put a cover on the deck, but this one doesn't work very well, the deck is also out. But we do not listen to music on the water anyway. With a 3 yr. old, it would always be some kind of Disney song anyway :( ! And Farmer doesn't want to hear me sing the Lion King soundtrack  .

She's a beaut'! Sno-bowl toilet cleaner works well for hull cleaning. Throw some wax on afterwards.

Nice looking '87, and welcome! You should be happy with your purchase, I bought an '88 last summer and love it.
I believe you can see where the stereo is mounted in one of my profile photos, it was there when I purchased the boat. I haven't had any problems, it is out of the way, and doesn't get wet ever. Just another idea, although if I did it again, I'd probably go under the mirror. Once again, welcome!
dude - I own the exact same boat - colors and all. Although new skins have been put on since I bought it. Had the same problem as sledneck - I couldn't find a waterproof face plate that was small enough for the spot under the mirror. I tried to buy from a MC dealer, but they told me that the prostar did not have a radio option in '87??? Anyway, the head unit in a box sitting on the dash. Its become a temporarily permanent home. My best idea was to pop a small hole just aft of the windshield for the wire harness and mount the box there. I'm too leggy to put it anywhere near the drivers seat. I listed it last Friday and sold it Monday so now I'll just let the new owner figure it out. Incidently, the rear speakers are easy, the holes are already in the plywood for 6". I put 4" in the front and had to cut the holes in the sidewall, including some cutting of the fiberglass for clearance.
