I am going to get the wife a new camera for her birthday. I would like to speand no more then $300.00. She wants something small that she can carry around and wants it to have a decent size display. What is the best bang for my buck.

Look into the Canon powershot A710 IS. You can buy them for well under $300. Lots of good features and value for the dollar. Its got Image Stabilzation too. My dad just got one for my mom, in fact she should get it UPS today. She likes a point and shoot camera, and dont want to fuss with the complicated SLR stuff. Consumers Reports rated this one pretty well too. We are kinda biased to Canon products. Nothing against Nikon or the other good brands, my dad just started using Canon cameras back in the day, and stuck with them. we have had great luck with all the canons we have had. :twocents:

I'm a fan of the canon digital elph. The newer ones have larger displays than mine. Good color rendition as well.

Saw the olympus stylus 770 sw on the cover of a one call mag sent to the house. Looks cool shock, water, freeze, crushproof. 7.1 mega thing for $379. Would make a good boat camera I think.

In my opinion, this is the best deal going... the Olympus 770 SW. My buddy just found one for $329 and the thing is waterproof. We were all at the sandbar on Memorial Day weekend and the dipsh!t decided to play a prank on my and hand me the camera, in the most contorted way, so I was sure to drop it in the water. He yelled at me, told me I was buying him a new camera, only to pull it out of the water and take a picture... pretty funny (Guess you had to be there!!) http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1287

Edit: Oops... Looks like TX beat me to it!

ANOTHER VOTE FOR CANON ELPH SDxxx

Last year I had to replace aging equipment and did a LOT of research. I bought a SD700 IS for the wife, and a Rebel XT SLR for me. The SD700 has been fantastic and has IS built into the body. I would recommend finding the Elph that fits your budget and megapixel needs.

We have a Nikon D50 and an elph SD600. The D50 is an awesome bigger camera that does everything and the SD is nice and compact to carry around. For the price I would go with the Elph as we have had very good luck with it.

My wife is a photographer and loves the D50, although I think she wants the new D80.

Why? The D50 is an amazing camera. If I ever replace mine, it will be into a D200 category.

So the only one that has not been mentioned here is the Sony Cybershot 8.1. That is the one she likes any thoughts on quality

We got the Panasonic Lumix 7.2-Megapixel Digital Camera - Brown Model: DMC-FX07T a month or so back and have been extremely happy.

The ELPH (we were comparing) had a better ISO setting, but we haven't noticed any issues with this one and it was $100 cheaper ($250). Best Buy has a special brown version (link attached) that is $50 cheaper than black or silver. We have the brown and it's cool. Takes good pictures. We're impressed.
