There has been some talk on a group buy for LED lights. I have been talking with Lit up and they have agreed to help us if we can get enough lights.

Some background.... these lights are from the same company that makes and sells Mastercraft there lights.

Owl Lighting does the wholesale market, so Lit Up is going to handle our order. Check out both web sites...

www.litupelectronics.com

This will be one big order so please let me know how many lights you are interested in. The more lights we order the cheaper it will be. After I have a count, I will let you know how much each light will cost and you can deside if you what them or not.

How many are interested.

Check out Mastercraft by Design Section F (Interior LED Light Pkg)
http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/l...tion=jump&id=13

However, these LED's can be used on trailers, or where you would like to put them.

Pictures coming soon...I wanting on Lit Up to send me some more pictures, but check out the websites above.

I would be interested in LED lights to replace the brake/turn lights and the side marker lights on my trailer, but I'd want ones that fit in the same openings. Can't tell from these pictures if these would work.

I believe that is a MC product and not from Lit Up...you could probably use a few of the cluser lights and wire them in. I not a specialist at wiring though.

I purchased 6 cluster lights and 5 SMT lights for my ProStar 190 from these guys, and the lights are awesome.

I installed the cluster lights under the side panels shooting towards the engine cover to "blanket" the carpet with light.
Then I installed 2 SMT lights behind each of the side panels so that the light was directed to the interior of the side panels. Then installed another SMT in the drivers footwell.

Hooked all of the lights up to the ANC position of the NAV light switch. When I am running at night, I get the NAV lights plus my LED's. Or, I can cut the NAV lights and hang out with just the LED lights. I am ready for a summer night with the lady!

You can just use your LED's at night but why have both anyway? I took the stock light housings out and converted them to the LED lights, so you cant even tell that something diffrent has been done to the boat. I saw some pictures of how other people have installed them and i didnt think it looked right. It just looks like they got the box of LED's and were putting them where ever they could think of it and not worring about apperance. Personally i dont think it looks good when you have the lights that came with your boat, and then a few inches away you have some LED cluster out in the open. So my onlt point is this, whatever you do, be happy with how it turns out, if it takes a little more time to do, make it look like it came that way from Mastercraft, and not Mastercrap!!!

I hope to be done with the inside of my X-2's LED's this weekend, then i will post some pictures.

Hey April, what about white LED's? And what about the clusters, do they have any with a white housing?

colors are blue, green, orange, purple, white, red and yellow. The yellow and red are less because they are more common. They only have chrome or black housings on the cluster lights. Black only on the step lights.

Maybe a blue and yellow combo. ???

According to the installation manual the X7, X9 and 197 require the following lights.

14 Cluster Lights (7 White, 7 Boat Color)
8 Step Lights (All Boat Color)
2 Full Length SMT (White)

Based on the light placement location identified on the same page of the manual these numbers don't match. Below is the list of parts you will need if you follow the light placement.

4 Cluster Lights (Boat Color)
7 Cluster Lights (White Color)
14 Step Lights (Boat Color)
2 Full Length SMT (White)

Doug, I mentioned a How To section, not the How To section. I wish we had one. Only the Malibu site has one (originally run and paid for by members, not Malibu, and I think still is, or maybe now partially funded by Malibu). Maybe it is the liability issue as you previously mentioned. Hey TTAdmin, what about it? Maybe you could check on at least putting other mfgs instructions in the download section. Such as Clarion, Perfect Pass (seen in Nautique's download section) Owl Lighting, depth finders.......

I gotcha. MBO is still independent if I understand things correctly (at least as of this time last year). I think a "how-to" section would be great, but in my opinion, should be a folder that has files uploaded by ttadmin, not just whoever. That way, it stays organized. The "It Worked for Me" folder on the old board was a great idea, but it got just as cluttered with responses as the other folders within a few weeks and wasn't a definitive how to. In other words, you had to sift through the posts to extract the info.

that looks great. thanks for sharing.

I was hoping to have my LED's install this week, but the stereo guys haven't even started. So, Neil will probably not get to start before Friday. I am so mad, I wanted the electronics done so Texas Mastercraft could finish the SS rubrail and get it cleaned so I can finally take delivery.

Received my LED's yesterday, thanks again April.

One dumb question..... When I look at the "red" cluster lights, the bulbs look white to me. I can test them to a battery but it's easier to just ask here.....

A resurrection of sorts
I have my led's in a box in my garage and after my rewarding oil change experience, I am ready to install these things! 1.5yrs later!

Has anyone done it and if so...
Can I wire them directly to one of my acc switches in my instrument panel?

Do I need fuses for each line?

Can I run a fairly lightweight speaker wire to these little gems?

Can I, Should I, wire the long runs in parallel, or series?

OR should I make a seperate run of wire for each and every LED from the LED to the switch?

I did 'em in my boat....under the side walls, the helm and observer seat. I just wired them to an unused accessory switch. The thinner speaker wire should work fine and I didn't use any additional fuses.

You will have absolutely no problem hooking them up to an accessory switch. LEDs are very low current draw lights. I have mine hooked up to two accessory switches where the ballast switches are on a 197. One switch controls the LEDs inside the boat and the other switch controls the LEDs in the grab rail, blower exhaust vents and the ones under the platform.

They are a pain to wire since they only have a few inches of wire sticking out the back. I used shrink tube butt splices for all of my connections to keep water out of them. If you do it this way just be careful not to melt the wires since they are so small.

sounds great
I am thinking a few under the gunwales, one in each speaker and one in the ice chest (maybe one under the drivers side but I thought that might be a lopsided look)

The dash is lit up at night so I don't think it looks lopsided....I did red LED's to match the dash lights.

How are you going to put them in a speaker? Are you talking about the ones mounted inside the boat or on a tower?

Ric
06-29-2006, 08:46 AM
well I am not altogether sure on how to mount them in the speakers
talking about the speakers in the boat, I have no tower speakers

I placed one on the backside of the center of the JL speaker grill in the rear location of the boat.

I have only jumpered it to the battery to see how it would look and it looked good

I wondered if it would stay in the speaker grill, being that it's only mounted with double sided tape.... That was about 3 weeks and many hours of skiing ago and it's still mounted properly, so I think it's gonna work.

If memory serves, those JL speakers are semi transparent cones??? If they are, then I may try placing the LED's behind the cones in a more stable mount of some kind. The light will not be as intense but I predict it may look even better!!??

aprgriggs

To mount them in the speakers you have to run the wire through one of the screw holes. Yes they will stay but make sure you leave some extra on the wire so the short wires don't pull the lights off the grill.

On my X9 I ran all my light to the accessory switches. Make sure that the switches have a fuse inline or on the panel so you don't blow out a switch if a wire comes loose.

Also, you can run the to a 12V battery. I did that for the light under my platform. It really keeps things simple but it is a pain to connect them all the time.

I would think that in the grill would look best. They aren't that bright, so behind the cone doesn't seem like it would be too noticable....it might be worth a try though just to see.

Ric
06-30-2006, 08:15 AM
I am trying both in the grill of the rear speakers and behind the cone of the bow speakers... Whichever looks best, I will change the other. I guess it depends on what you like more than anything...

I will try to get pics chaser, but I bet they'll be worth a thousand words...

I will post this in the proper stereo thread but you don't actually have to remove that kick panel where the sub is mounted in the 197 in order to access the tunnel thru conduit that's below the ice chest. You can see it if you remove the front cushion and do a circ de solel position...

We have done a few installs for TXMC and have a unique strip that we put in the JL grills. Super simple install, just drill a small hole next to one of the bottom screw holes to exit the LED wire. There are three LED's that fire up the face of the cone so light displacement if very even and clean. Easily one of the cheapest and most effective placements for an MC owner with JL's.

Yell if you need help Ric!

I haven't installed mine but I'm planning on running under the gunnel all around, behind the speakers and in all storage areas. I have around 40 led's left.

For the wiring I'm just going to tap onto one of the inside lights and use speaker wire to run positive and negative around using a little hot melt to hold in place. Then where I want a led you seperate the speaker wires, strip a bit and solder bridge a resistor and LED between the positive and negative. The led's are polarized. It does not matter if LED or resistor is first or last.

I did find out my 2001 Maristar actually has a few led cluster around in different places!

I originally placed about ten purple LED clusters around my boat, and although it did give a little glow it was almost imperceptible.

So, I decided to replace them with some big dogs. I bought a underbody light kit that rednecks put under their cars. Its perfect, long strips about 48" long with about 400 led lights in each. Super easy to mount, I just used double sided tape on the mounts that came with each. I also bought the 6" strip kit, they charged me 250 bucks for everything that I needed.

I put a 4' strip up under each gunnel (197/X7)
I also put a 4' strip under the rear seat

I then put a 6" strip in each of the rear vents so that it shines down on the swim platform

I put 2 - 6" strips on the steering mechanism under the dash shining down, then another 6" strip in the glove box.

I have 5 more clusters for the front of the boat when I get bored.

I used the factory wiring that fed the factory little LED lights in each gunnel.

The install took a little time, due to the complexity of this system.

I opted for the 15million color model, which is in reality just clusters of 4 leds in primary colors that mix through the computer to form any color you want.

I now have two separate remote controls, plus a computer module by the dash to control everything.

There are 15 settings are so to make the light dance around the boat, in circles or whatever. The kids dig it, it drives me nuts. I just set it on blue/purple and let it ride.

I thought it might be a little over the top, but its perfect. Really bright though, but also easy to turn down.

We watched the fireworks from the boat, and the kids had it set so the lights went bright with each vibration (made to dance the light to the music). It was picking up the fireworks and flashing along with the lights in the sky. Pretty cool.

I will take some pictures this evening. Its a neat system with the changeable colors, if you want green...yellow...blue....white....whatever. Just click the remote.

Here is the kit I bought....

http://www.enterthenightlife.com/store.php?goto=10&item=2muck

check out the options on the bottom of the page. Hoosier as heck, but the kids love it.

nice work specialty!
Can you shoot us a pic of the led cluster you used inside the speaker grilles?

Mine are a cluster of 4 led's and there is no way they would fit where you mounted them (at least not without the speaker gasket banging them all day)

With my clusters, I mounted them in the dead middle of the inside of the speaker grill, so they are aiming toward the cone... That leaves a black spot in the middle of the grill when they are lit but I am not sure anyone would recognize that problem unless I told them that was the actual cluster... What do yall think?

I have not yet lit up the front to see what they look like when lit up behind the cone(I am anxious to see that subtle look)
OF COURSE THEY ARE RED!!

Ric
07-07-2006, 12:58 PM
Leroy, is there a way to see if my clusters already have a resistor in them?

I know you got yours at a different place than me, so maybe mine come with the resistor built into the cluster?

Can I run a ohm meter across the +/- wires?

If these pics were at all legible, you'd see what I mean, but the first pic is the bow speaker(photo taken from the driver's seat). It's more faint and honestly I like it better than the rear speaker I will show in the second pic.

I installed the led in the bow speakers BEHIND the speaker on that molding of the speaker frame that has a nice flat clean surface to mount the sticky tape...

The rear speaker, I safety wired the led to the inside of the speaker grill where the bulbs are aiming at the cone of the speaker...

Ric
08-10-2006, 07:49 AM
The rear speaker lites are brighter but of course, you see a spot where the led housing is blocking some of the lite... not a big deal but it does not look clean. (the lite housing is more obvious to me when we are in the boat than it is to someone who has no idea that I installed the led's myself, but I still am not happy with the look)

With the diode (LED) in there you will not be able to measure the resistance accurately. Can you see a resistor? If you can see it or open up the case and then see it tell me what colors you see on the resistor. Or you can measure across the resistor directly then. I think my resistor for single led were 820 ohms.

BTW, I checked at the electronics shop in Shenzhen China this week and could buy 1000 blue LED's for $25! Actually any color, almost any size.

Are you making your own LED's?

If so do you have any pictures. I tried a few times to make them but it was a pain to get the resisitor right. that is why I just buy them from a factory here in dallas.
