View Full Version : Front skeg damaged...boat taking in water

My friend has an 03 Sammy 197. Today while he was going about 5mph with a boat full of adults he struck a rock with the front skeg and then hit and bent the prop.

The skeg bent into the fiberglass and caused a crack in the hull bottom right through the boat. The boat was taking in water and so we pulled it.

I would think that the boat would be able to withstand a jolt without putting a hole in the bottom? It was only at 5 mph or less.

Any thoughts??? Is this repairable??

Wow! I wouldn't have guessed at that speed that so much damage could be created. Can you post pics, my curiousity is peaked now.

I saw a '91 do that when it hit a submerged stump at idle and then the front fin actually stuck in the core of the stump and started taking on water. They got it off the stump, ran it to the ramp that was close by and loaded it up and the hull drained water for a hour. The hull was actually cracked in front of the fin and acted like a scoop.
