After greasing my rudder and steering yesterday ('89 PS190) I discovered that the Zerk fitting in the cable is missing the check valve ball - greasy mess when I turned the wheel to work in the grease. The fitting is smaller than the other fittings and I can't find the correct size anywhere. It is smaller than 1/8 or 6mm. I sure don't want to replace the cable for a five cent fitting. I could re-tap it to the larger size but would prefer to get the correct one.

Thanks!

Beleive it or not !!! It is not missing the the ball in the zert. They do this so too much grease is put in. It is best to put some in and work it back and forth then put a little more and repeat to it starts to come out and your done.

If you take out the original no-ball zerk and replace it with a ball-zerk then you grease it, the steering will lock up. The ball is left out so the excess grease you put in will be pushed out so the steering will cable will move, but you can learn the hard way and swap it out and see what happens for the giggles of it.

they're right.

I had a fun prank on my lil bro, he was greasing in the rear, so I ran the wheel all the way to the right, and he takes the grease gun off and is standing there on the side and i spin it hard all the way around and

PFT! sky rocket of grease.

it was pretty sweet.

Fill it full of grease then turn the steering full left and right. You will see a fountain of grease come back out. These guys are right. If it had the check valve, it would lock up the steering (grease lock).

Thanks. No wonder they use a different size.

There is a aluminum tube at the end the steering cable that bolts on a bracket on the strut bolts and runs to the tiller arm, a fitting is there and there is be a zerk where the cable bolts to the strut and there is one on the rudder port, for a total of 3. Only the tube zerk doesn't have a ball. There should be a diagram/picture in your owners manual showing the locations.

in most boats you have to remove rear seat, anything that covers the tank, and then there is an access under there, or the floor can be unscrewed and removed.

Thanks for all the info in this thread. I had never lubed my steering because I didn't know too. I did it today and if I hadn't read this first, I would not have thought to add grease or even check it. And I would have been puzzled over the fitting also:confused: SO THANKS AGAIN FOR SOME GREAT INFO!:D
