If I were buying for fun, I would consider a few (or several) years old Acura NSX. I love the targa roof concept. It looks like a supercar, and has Honda reliability so it could be a daily driver that wouldn't cost a total fortune to maintain - until I got some dents in the body anyway. Not the fastest thing out there, but they are a lot of fun.

Haven't you all heard the jokes about BMW's? I think you can find one on the Morning Joke thread.

pick one of these up for less than $10k, buy a $6k kit and have 345/360 rwhp/torque all day long, perfectly tuned with A/C. That's less than $20k invested and will walk on anything except a new viper, ZO6, AMG55 or above Porsche GT2 or 3, for a WHOLE lot less money.

You'd surely ski more often, shaving all sorts of time off the drive vs the Dodge. Your kids can fit in the back (for now) and you'll be just fine if you can borrow a neighbors truck to put the boat in.

OH drivers are so slow on the freeway. 65-70 feels like I'm crawling - aparently the State Troopers take their jobs pretty seriously. So I abide.

Ryan, a good friend of mine ordered what looked like one of those only his was a four door and went to the factory over there and picked it up. He told me they took it out to the autoban took it up to 140 and was still getting passed. They shipped it back home and I saw it Sunday at a graduation party. Said he saved $4000. the way he did it!!!

Just came home from the lake and most drivers are averaging 70 to 75 because of the fuel costs. I have even slowed down. I drove the Dodge home at 72mph and got 18mpg. Not bad for a big 2500!!

No - you are correct. All Porsches have type numbers, usually a 900 series - the current 911 is a 997, the previous version 911 was a 996, and before that 993, 960.. etc. The original 911 Turbo was a type 930 and think they were sold in the US as a 930. The slantnose was a variant.

the 911 was origionally a type 901 which is a trademark of another company so 911 was the official designation. All true 911's are aircooled. With the inception of liquid cooling (the death of the true Porsche... sigh) they started the new numbers.

To keep the symbolism of the 911 alive they kept the 911 badgework.

Its not uncommon for there to be changes behind the lettering, BMW 3 series for instance have chassis numbers behind them e30, e36 etc.

And Mercedes has chassis types that designate more fully behind the badgework.

I've put in for a promotion and if I get it I'll lose my company car. One replacement on my list is a Volvo S60 R. Anyone have/had a S60? There is a red one for sale locally just like this one and am looking for some first-hand experience with reliability. I'm also looking at an Audi A6 S-Line, and prefer the more roomy back seat, but the bi-turbos have me spooked for poor longevity.

^^ I had an 02' A6 3.0 and REALLY liked that car. check out audiforums.com if you already haven't for info on those cars. I wouldn't get that worried about it. If you are going to buy a car like that the bills will be higher for repair. But the smiles on the face are much better too. :D

Ryan
04-21-2008, 04:17 PM
That forum is where the 2.7T got me spooked. The 3.0 has a little more apeal for longevity and better mpg sans quattro...but, it's 220hp vs the S-line's 265.

Did your A6 have the CVT? If so did you like it? I've not driven a 3.0 with it yet, but have mixed impressions from other brands.

6ballsisall
04-21-2008, 04:33 PM
No, mine was a Quattro which you don't get the CVT with. I have read the CVT was NOT a good option to go with back then. Get the Quattro if at all possible. Mileage on my car was reasonable. In Atlanta traffic I regularly got 21'ish. On the highway if I could keep it under 80 (hard to do with this car, it's like 85+) I'd see 26'ish.

Ryan
04-21-2008, 04:45 PM
That's better mpg than I expected for quattro.

I considered getting a real gas saver & maybe a bigger boat. But that would net me more gas $ than a moderate mpg car and keep my ps190 boat that seems to sip fuel. My current co. car is a minivan and I could really stand to drive something more fun than it or an econo box, which frakly, I think are comanding all too high a price right now. I mean, why should I get a 4 cyl Mazda3, Altima, or Accord when I can get a really fun car of equal vintage for $2-3k more?

6ballsisall
04-21-2008, 04:53 PM
Ryan, 02-04 A6's can be bought for 11-14k all day long with less than 60k miles on them. (I did) I'd highly recommend the car to anyone. I really liked mine. One other thing, you can run the cheap gas (if youwant) in the 3.0, whereas you can't with the 2.7T. I ran midgrade in mine almost all the time, except for a few occassions when my mind was elsewhere and I grabbed the wrong pump. The 3.0 runs fine on low grade.

Ryan
04-21-2008, 05:09 PM
Thanks for the advice. I'm holding off on test drives until I know for sure on the job. That's the deal maker. Plus, I may be able to keep the car until my position is filled which will be a while.

ncsone
04-21-2008, 06:04 PM
I had and '04 A4 with the 3.0 engine. It was one of the best engines I have ever seen. Lots of torque for its size, very smooth and quiet. As mentioned earlier, that car loved to run. Overall, the car was very solid and smooth. It was no problem to cover 700+ miles in it in a day.

Not necessarily. While I don't enforce the rule 100% of the time, my driveway is reserved for domestics only. Imports (Toyotas, hondas, isuzus, nissans, hyundais, etc) get sent to the curb most of the time.:purplaugh

I have driven over a Honda Accord a few years ago. And yes I do mean literally and on purpose. But it was not in my driveway.:D

I'm looking at '01 and newer 9-5 wagons (can't find a domestic wagon that gets decent mileage in that year range that looks halfway decent, the taurus is the only choice, can't afford a Magnum)

The threat of a $3,000 cost for timing belt service for the A6 killed that as an option for me.

I went for a white Infiniti G35 with 6sp manual & black leather instead. It is proving to be way more fun than I expected. I went skiing with Footin' last night and found plenty of room for gear and ski in the trunk with the rear armrest pass-through.

I thought I had pics on this computer. Nabbed this off Google instead, this is the exact setup I have.
I need a tint job.

Do you like the car? I am trying to decide on my next car and looking at slightly used right now. The A6 is top of the list but have also looked at the Lexus all wheel drive version. Basically any car with all wheel drive is on the list big enough to carry a 4 person family and gear so the A4 is a bit small.

I like it A LOT! It's much roomier than an A4 and it can be had in AWD. Not sure what Lexus you're speaking of GS or IS? I don't know what price range you're looking at but you can probably get into a new G35x for the price of a 1-2 yr old A6.

I had a 2001 9-5 Aero. I think the ex still has it. It was a pretty nice car, but I didn't like the torque-steer of the front wheel drive. The car had 260hp stock, and with some simple mods I had about 275hp. Very comfortable, tight, and nice looking. I'd buy one again if it had RWD.

If you want a wagon, you could go with a BMW 540 wagon. Rear wheel drive, plenty of snort out of the hole...

H20skeefreek
07-03-2008, 09:40 PM
I'm looking at the "Linear" or "Arc" models, because that is what is coming up the most in my search, with the lower HP's I've read that the torque steer isn't nearly the problem, but he car will still get out of it's own way. And everyone I've seen has been in great shape.

Top Gear is such a satisfying and entertaining show. I used to discard it, favoring 5th gear since Tiff is a real race driver. I'm completely sold on Top Gear now, I don't know of any other show produced to that incredible level with fantastic visuals and real, honest evaluations.

I'd love to see a US version or similar. But, I'm afraind it would wind up looking like Jay Leno's rip-off 'Green Car Challenge". So, I'll stick with Jeff, Richard, James & The Stig.

I'm really on to the Audi R8 right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaENG1vt6-Y

That Lamborghini has an awesome sound and looks to boot...if it came in red do you think it would match the garage? (not many people remember Maeghan with dark hair...lol)

Too bad a USA version has been cancelled before it ever got a start.
