View Full Version : Sumo Tube?

Has anybody seen one of these?
I stumbled into it when looking thru the Cabela's catalog.
I am not a fan of toobin, but wouldn't mind a ride in one when it is too rough to ski.

My kids saw one in Cabela's a while back and now they think they have to have one. Looks to me like a person would be in a world of hurt if they hit a wake head on...can anyone say stiff neck?

I agree. Maybe I can nail a barefoot tumbleturn with it. hehehe :purplaugh

I can say it, “STIFF NECK”. That would be brutal end over end.

Yeah, that doesn't look like fun to me either.

Cmon, with enough alcohol in you, your neck would be nice and loose when the header came.. I think it would roll alot in a turn or if you let go of the rope.. Not that I am a pro tuber or anything.....

The extreme tubing clip looked more fun than this rig. Even the guy riding it has a pained look on his face.

I am not against tubing, but that thing doesn't look safe to me.
I would be afraid to have their face that close to the water at tubing speeds. I think you could easily drown someone with it. You'll never see one behind my boat.

Wear it :eek3: Steer it :eek3: Roll it :eek3: Jump it :eek3:

The Sumo Tube is an exciting new twist to freestyle towables. It attaches to the rider, (this doesn't sound very safe) not the boat or tow rope. Simply slide into the Sumo Suit, hold a grab handle on a 60-ft. line, and you're ready to roll 360s, jump wakes, or just glide across the surface. Steering is as easy as turning arms left or right.

A fast and fun bodysurfing thrill ride, you'll never soon forget!
Single chamber inflates quickly. 38"L x 33" dia.

Second thought, I think I will pass.
Now if your head was back inside like a turtle..... maybe.

I noticed every picture shows the rider "popping a wheelie" and no pictures of it skiming along on the water. The funnel shape looks like it will cause face down sinus flushings :eek3: .

All i have to say about it is....I hate tubing to begin with...This thing looks stupid and unsafe...

Leroy
03-30-2005, 02:12 AM
Matercrafting; Yes, stupid, but unsafe compared to skis? ;)

Safety seems relative reading the "recovering from bad wrecks" thread. :D

I would do this, not the Sumo!

I saw these at the boat show in Jan. in Minneapolis, they had a booth set up. A friend of mine tried the sumo tube on, said it was bulky and a little heavy. It is weighted on the bottom so when you let go of the rope you float head up. The gyro would scare me a bit because you can't see where you are going, you are up in that thing and there is no opening at the top, it's meant to do barrel rolls. Would scare me to not be able to see what I was going to hit or run into. Again it is weighted at the bottom so you float head up. Would like to try it once, might be fun. Not so into the tubing things though. Once in a while when the water is too rough for anything else. Can't see wasting glass on tubing when there are way more important this to be doing!!!

sizzler
03-31-2005, 04:18 AM
H2OGIRL...these things are def.NOT weighted.....my 7 year old tried it on for a laugh and jumped in the lake.....her head went under and her feet straight up in the air..i jumped in and pulled her out,she was shocked to say the least (as was i)....both girls know not to go anywhere near them now.......i agree that wasting "glass" is a crime,,but when you've got it all day long and you fancy a laugh with some pals...it dont hurt....... :twocents:

i would say 80/90% of this board are/were thrill seeking adrenelin junkies, that love to try something new...if we didn't there would be no development ........people shouldn't be "dissed" for having fun.....

jump off soap box and put toys back into pram, pete

I thought that would happen, having them tip over the wrong way. That was my biggest fear with them, especially since my driver (girlfriend) is still really learning how to operate a boat at all, not just pulling.

We used to drag each other up to around for the local ski show. We called it the dolphine rider routine. Two guys would interlock their arms on a lengthened ski handle and a girl would lay on top....the boat would pull you up like a kneeboard and you would breathe to the right or left of wake hitting your head. Once you were up on plane the girl would stand up and ride up. You had to arch your back or your jewels would get smashed.

Sounds like when someone wears a drysuit for the first time & dives in head first before burping the suit. All the air goes straight to the feet & they have a hard time getting upright again :uglyhamme

I've done that before. We figured out that we needed either 1 very long handle so both of us "dolphins" could use the same one, or 2 seperate handles with both of us holding each other's arms. Cinchers and "helmets" (not for on on our shoulders either) were requirements.
