View Full Version : Perfect Pass: Group buys?
André
02-05-2005, 11:41 AM
There's a couples of members, including me, mentionning that they are about to get Perfect pass in a near future. :toast:
Anybody interrested in maybe forming a group to try to get a good deal?
Do someone knows of a place that would be interrested to deal with such a group of buyers?
Any inputs or ideas?
Thanks! :steering:

I think the guys at SkiertoSkier.com may work a deal for a group of MC owners. I don't need one, but I can check with Max (the owner of S2S), to see if he would be willing to give the MC group a deal. How many people are interested if they could get a deal?

Thanks Doug!
We will have to wait a couples of days to see how many peoples are interrested (maybe it will only be me?).
But i'm pretty sure there will be some other folks looking for a good deal to

This is becoming interresting!
Guys ,i will wait a couples of days to be sure that everyone can jump in.
I would gladly do business with Jim at BAWS if the deal is good! ;)
I am really not a Perfect Pass expert,so be sure to do your own homeworks about what you want to buy.
As Jim mentionned,be sure to post infos on your boat, year, engine,Efi or carb or anything that you think is related to choosing a Perfect Pass system.
I will wait until thuesday night before doing the stats and then try to get quotes but i'm pretty sure Jim at BAWS as an OFFICIAL Perfect Pass dealer and friend of Team Talk, will get us one of those once in a lifetime deal, uncredibly, ridiculous, unbeatable price.(Man,i'm such a sucker!)
Did i mentionned Jim at BAWS?
Ok,can i get up know?

Try to get it shipped direct from Perfect pass , no matter who you buy it from! Brokerage fee's from UPS & the others are way out of line , Perfect Pass is a Canadian company , so André & any other Canucks should try to save on shipping & brockerage Fee's.

while I really don't think I need it, I'd be interesting in hearing Jim's price on one for a '85 with 351.
I found a used Accuski for 450 bucks with auto-pullup, so if I get one at all, it'll probably be that one, but I would certainly like to hear how much it'd cost me to get the best brand new.

It looks like you really got something started here!!! How many units do you have so far?
I said I would like the PerfectPass Plus, but I noticed Jim@BAWS said something about getting the Pro model. That would be fine too, but I do want to see what kind of pricing we can get before committing to buying.

Since I already have one, I'm not in on the buy, but to speak to what one person said about installation, if you're getting the digi pro model on an older boat that doesn't already have a paddle wheel, you'll have to drill a hole in the boat if you want the paddle wheel and digital speedo. If you don't wakeboard or trick, the speed-based control is, for the most part, more than you need. For slalom, the plus system with a magnet sensor will do you fine. Of course, reading on the perfect pass website, it seems that upgrades for the older plus systems are not offered for as long as they are for the digital pro models, so that might be a reason to go with the whole enchilada so you can continue to upgrade your chip for years to come. Who knows? Perfect Pass knows.
Just bear in mind that if you're like me and wince at the thought of drilling a hole in your hull, a full install should run you about 2.5 hours labor at your MC dealer. I was quoted as many as 6 hours and drove quite a few hours to get it done for 2.0 hours (approx. $175).
All that said, it's a wonderful option to have on a boat.
Wish you all would have done this a month ago, I just bought PerfectPass. After some discussion with Perfectpass, settled on the Plus system, since my boat is used pretty much exclusivly for slalom.
I paid 970 at MMWatersports with free shipping, which is MSRP, but they give you $100 credit towards any other merchandise...so it's sort of a discount.
This was the best deal I could find after extensive research.
BrianM
02-07-2005, 04:32 PM
Man, you would start a group buy 2 weeks after I bought mine. Oh well.
As for the install, I did it myself and think that it very simple for anyone with even a little bit of mechanical knowledge or anyone that can follow directions for that matter.
Just bear in mind that if you're like me and wince at the thought of drilling a hole in your hull,
Drilling the hole was the second easiest part of the whole thing. Again if you can drill a hole in wood you can do this easy.
a full install should run you about 2.5 hours labor at your MC dealer. I was quoted as many as 6 hours and drove quite a few hours to get it done for 2.0 hours (approx. $175
I would agree with that. I would think that there is no way a dealer should charge you over 3 hours to install the thing unless they have a chimp installing it:D . It took me just over three to install my Digital Pro and I had never done one before.

Retail when I bought mine was, as it is, $1,295. I recall paying schnitz somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,125 or so delivered, but memory fails me on the exact figure. Unfortunately, he is no longer a perfect pass dealer, purportedly for selling them so cheaply (although I could be wrong on the reason).

Ok guys,Thuesday night and here the situation.
First, i understand that many peoples want to see a price range before comitting and that is perfectly normal.
On the other hand ,i'm sure that you also understand that if we get a quote for 20 units and only 10 actually go ahead and buy, this could change the deal too!
There is some infos that i need from all of you to get a decent quote with no surprise.
1:Type of system you want.
2:Name,shipping adress,E-Mail adress.
3:Engine, boat, year.
Here is the list of peoples who replied to the thread:
Vern S,K Pickett,c 640947,Rackattack,MasterMason,Cody,T Rager,Lake Tippy skier,Martini,Farmer Ted,Andy G,PeteS,TallAndy,K2mc,Brad.
If you want to get on the list just post your infos here or PM me.
I am missing shipping adresses from everyone, kind of system for a lot of you and we need all those infos to get a realistic pricing.I can't get a quote for someone who just post "I'm interrested..." without knowing what you want.
So,Gentlemens i have to ask you to post all those infos again so i can go ahead and get quotes
There is 16 names on the list right now.I think if we can get half of us to get a system,we could saves a couples of bucks( I hope...)
Will wait until thursday night to close the list then send it for quotes.
It is possible that you will receive your quotes via E mail and also possible that you will be ask not to post prices on the board in respect of the deal.Just MAYBE!
Ok,so that's 3 infos:
Type of system
Name, shipping and Email adresses.
Engine,boat,year.
Thanks!

Andre, I'm too lazy to read back over the thread, but have you checked with skier-to-skier and skidim? You can get the MasterCraft-branded guage from any perfect pass dealer in my experience.
I've seen nothing but that Jim@BAWS is a good and conscientious dealer. But I know I've heard from my nearest MC dealer of how busy they get this time of year. I've had experience with my nearest MC dealer getting too busy for me during boat show season and beyond. I've been waiting for over a year for them to call me back on that order (that's the beyond part).
Everybody's got schedules to keep and decisions to make. Your money is just as green (are Canadian dollars green?) as everyone else's though. And a $16,000 perfect pass order is nothing to sneeze at or put on the back burner, no matter what the X-series is selling for. Thank goodness for the internet and competition.
Why doesn't someone on here with a small business become a dealer. Just get the one initial order for 15-20 and give everyone a GREAT deal, not just $100 off or something...

From what I've seen over the past year, I'd say PP is beginning to protect their dealers a little more. This would make it hard for a newcomer to obtain a dealer status and order one big bulk and then most likely disappear, but you guys could try it.

How are the returns coming in? Are the guys happy with the price and willing to pull the trigger?
Why is this like a little secret society? What's the price? We do group buys on a lot of Porsche items and no one keeps the price a secret...if someone doesn't understand the concept of "bulk" pricing/purchasing they need to go back and take economics 101. I might be interested if the price is right but if this is trying to protect a vendor who wants to keep hush hush, I'll "pass".

Ric, that was my guess as far as the reason for not publishing the price. The last guy who was offering too sweet a deal isn't allowed to sell them anymore. But that's just a guess, and whatever Jim's reason is, it's his business and he can run it as he wishes. Furthermore, if Bret doesn't want in, he doesn't have to buy one.

It never ceases to amaze me how a good deed can turn so sour. Jim and Andre have worked hard at trying to put together a good deal for people they don't even know, out of good will, I suppose. How can you critisize that? We should all thank them for their goodness, wheather we're in on the deal or not!!! Remember to pass the kindness we recieve on to others, then the world will be a much better place :D

Thanks Andre and Jim for putting this together. As a followup to my PM to you Andre, I'm still in.
Since inconsistent speed will will no longer be a factor, my 15 year old will have to find something else to complain about (maybe the water will be too wet! ). I hope everyone who showed interest continues to be interested in order to make this happen.

ok I now feel a little better, my younger son is not the only one. He wanted new board bindings, and then complains because they are not broken in.....
And as stated to Andre in PM I am also in and greatly appriciate his time and effort, as well as Jim @ BAWS for putting this together. :toast: I can't understand why anyone is whining, this was open to all, anyone that wanted to know the price just had to say they were interested and provide a small amount of infomation. Jim asked that it not be posted, and I don't see any issues with that, if you wanted to know you should have or perhaps still may be able to contact Andre to find out.

So far we are 9 peoples in,but all of them are SERIOUS buyers so this thing IS gonna happen even if we don't get to 15.
This buy is closing on Sunday so not much more to wait.I thank you all for your patience.
André
All I did was ask for a PRICE and why can't it be made public. I DIDN'T BLAST ANYONE, didn't comment on anyone it particular; the question was GENERAL. If you will go back and read ALL I DID IS ASK WHY IT CAN'T BE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. I also said I WAS INTERESTED if the price was right.
So next time read the DAMN reply before getting on my ***. I've done several group buys, headed up some; you don't work your butt off, you make a few calls, sort through a few emails and forward them along. I didn't offend anyone. If you took offense, then it's your own fault for reading something BETWEEN the lines that wasn't there...so go back and read again.
Again, the main question WAS what is the price and why can't it be PUBLIC knowledge and it's not WHINNING.
I'll reiterate it again so everyone who wanted to ***** can read it again: I didn't blame, point, BLAST anyone. IF you took offense then you read something in there that was not there.
I'll apoligize IF it offended anyone now that I have the above off my chest, but my comments were purely inquisitive. I'm pissed off because the ground hog saw his shadow too but let's not take it out on one person. :)

I've got plenty of soup but I will PASS on your brand. I'll send some cheese and crackers to go with your WhINE.
All vendors can adjust prices and work on their margin and I thought my wife might like it. I simply don't like hush hush deals that can't be out in public.

When I got my PP a couple of months ago they sent me 4 stickers. They have a new design that has a blue background with a skier in them. I didn't like the new ones and called and asked if they still had the old style stickers that are just the logo letters individualy. Those look much better on the boat window. They still had some left and sent me 3 of those as well. No charge.

I'm preparing to install the Perfect Pass Thru-Hull Speed Sensor and I note that the installation instructions state that some hulls have a core (i.e., a layer of wood or foam) laminated between the inner and outer skins. Does anyone know if the 1990 ProStar 190 hull has this cored design? Or is it a solid piece of fiberglass?
Thanks in advance of your feedback.

Installation complete! As Mattercraft said, piece of cake. Took me about 3 hours total and I NEVER work on mechanical stuff. Spent most of the time fishing the control wires under the floorboard, scratching my head and going to the hardware store to get a hole saw. Hope to put it in Lake Don Pedro Saturday and test it. Let me tell you, once you drill a 2" hole in the bottom of your boat you can do anything!!!

I know how you feel about having a dealer drill a hole in your hull, but it was and is really, really easy. First I measured and re-measured and then measured again to make sure I was going to put the hole in the right spot. After determining the spot to drill, I laid out a square pattern of masking tape. Then I laid tape diagonally over the first layer then I laid out tape vertically over the first 2 layers. After that, I measured again and marked the spot with a Sharpie. I then slowly drilled a small pilot hole through the hull from the bottom. After that, I ran the hole saw in reverse using the pilot hole as a guide until I scored through the masking tape enlarging the pilot hole and scoring the gel coat at the same time. I then repeated the hole saw routine from the top. After that I went back underneath, held my breath, and cut the hole. Came out very smooth and clean. The initial fear was the worst part...just in case you need a confidence boost and want to try (do) it.

Good luck with the test! I performed a lake test last weekend at Don Pedro. It worked great. The only thing I had to do was calibrate the speed with the GPS. After calibration, the Perfect Pass speed reading matched the GPS reading within 2 tenths of a mph at all speeds. The tach was right on with the stock tach. The water temp feature was cool too (no pun intended)...58.7 degrees

I cut the hole and installed it myself! Drilling the hole was a bit scary  But thanks to the information posted here and other websites it went well! Although I had to remind myself to breath  Covering with masking tape as shown in the photo, drilling a pilot hole and dilling in reverse on both sides did the trick.
As shown in the second photo I also used the Dremel tool to cut out an area on the decorative engine cover. I know that I could have done with out it...but I was used to seeing it and its all in what we are used to.
I tested my PP system this past Sat. and NO leaks!!! Although I don't have a GPS to sync the speed...it works!
Update: NSXBill noticed in the previous photo that it was displaying the rear of the boat where I had drilled for the PP system. That was the wrong photo. The attached photos are correct. The other photo is for the new hole for the water source of the new ballast pump I put in. Too many projects...not enough time!

nope I am not as brave as others here, After all I have read, I am sure I could have done it, but the piece of mind was worth a few bucks to me. and while it was in they fixed a wireing problem I had with the heater from the original owners install.

What course is unused on the weekends on the delta?
If you go down twin sloughs from Discovery bay and go towards union point, just off the main route there is a course, there is a grand stand and everything. My delta map is in the boat so I don't have exact names of the channels. I don't think I have ever seen anyone actually using it during the weekend. I am sure that they have the occasional event there, since they have a grand stand and everything, but like I said, I have ever seen anyone even running the course.
