what exactly happened?
The customer had his storage marina load the boat unto the trailer (from dry stack storage) and then they hooked the trailer to his truck for him. For whatever reason they didn't use the "pin" that was attached to the trailer to secure the latch, they used a bolt (not bad in and of itself but since they installed it with nylocks it was left as evidence after the incident). Instead of making sure the latch was down and secure they ran the bolt through with the latch up...so it never was able to close, let alone be secure. The trailer came off the ball in downtown Charlotte on I-77 southbound and when the cables broke veered left into the concrete divider wall.

Consider the wood knocked;) I wonder if it will be coming to the big insurance auction here in town.. Every total loss claim in the state from several major insurers comes straight here.

Is this a decision you make or the adjuster? Is the boat indeed totalled? I cant't tell from the pics exactly what the extent of damage is.

All up to the insurance company...the boat was insured for a stated amount instead of "market value" (so the value is much greater), therefore the threshold of totaling this boat is very high. Damage to the boat is very substaintial...around $20,000 including splitting the boat. Add to that a new trailer to replace the destroyed unit and this should be a total loss...but it is close. It has been my experience that you can figure 75% of stated value or market value as the threshold.

Got ya! I have a stated value on my boat also (I wanted to make sure if something happened, I could buy a NEW boat). Have you ever seen all the components yanked from a hull and put in a new hull? Is that even a feasible option?

We have not done it here, but the factory does this from time to time when the cost of making a new hull is less than the cost to repair one (warranty repairs only as the factory long ago stopped doing "retail repairs")

If I had to venture a guess.. It is totaled.. To much liability for the ins co. to put a boat with THAT kind of questionable damage on the water.. Is there any way to tell if the stringers and such survived the accident? Heck that is a 65mph zone isn't it?? My biggest question is the liability exposure for the warehouse that hitched it?? Seems they are probably liable...IMHO

Any chance of finding out who the storage facility is/was?
If he was southbound, my guess is it was on Lake Norman.

I/we know who it was...I'm not repeating it here because I didn't see them hook it to the truck and I only have no side of the story. It was not anyone on Lake Norman or Wylie.

Mike, can you tell if the safety cables attached and did the emergency brake cable did it's job?

What if..... this guy would have tied down the transom?

Thank God nobody was hurt, but Monty, is this owner better off that the boat came off the trailer making a total loss inevitable?

Brake cable worked...calipers were locked...saftey cables both snapped. I don't know if transom straps would hold the load that was applied when the trailer hit the wall. What I can tell you is that the boat buddy and winch strap both failed.

Any idea how much force that would take to fail both? I assume there was some significant speed combined with sudden deceleration syndrome...

Not sure but you can safely assume 60mph where this took place. Both cables frayed and snapped near the crimp.
