Alright...I'm down to purchasing my new prop after replacing shaft, strut, rudder, etc.... I have a 24' maristar with a 454 Chevy engine and a 1:1 Velvet drive. I had a 14x14x1" 3-blade NiBrAl prop before. Is that the best setup to put back on or do any of you have other recommendations.

I use the boat for pleasure cruising and recreational skiing (slalom, wakeboard, etc...).

Any help would be appreciated....Thanks!!!

I'd suggest you give the real experts a call. Acme or OJ will be able to give you the info you need. If you go with an Acme, I'd suggest getting it through boarditup.com I got one through Carl last summer and he had a great price and terrific service.

Definitely get in touch with Bill at Acme or Eric at OJ. Both have helped me in the past, and can give you better advice than anyone. I'll look for their contact info.

Working on the same thing wsrobert. OJ was extremely helpful, as was skidim.. It all depends on your specific use/ needs..

I'm surprised you have a 3 blade. My 240sc has a 4 blade SS prop. I think it is the original. I'm not sure what the pitch it is.

How does the 3 blade perform?

I actually did talk with Eric and he said he had a 13 x 12.5 x 1" 3-blade that I could try to see how it performs. I'm willing to try anything.

The current 3-blade isn't bad. I mean the 240 is a pretty heavy boat and it still comes out of the water pretty good (especially if I get into it hard). You just can't beat American muscle Chevy 454...My top speed is about 45 mph at ~5500 rpm.

What about you? What kind of speeds and hole shot do you see with the 4-blade? Is your definitely a 1" shaft?

Honestly I can't remember what my top end was. My speedo clogged last time out. It also ate the distributor mechanical advance. Nothing left but a mess of smeared metal in the cup. Should be on its way back from Mallory right now from its rebuild. I'm out of the hole real fast and pulls super strong. I'm topping out at aroung 4200 rpm. Sounds like you are spinning a whole lot faster than I am. I'll GPS it MM day weekend if the dist. shows!

Matt

I should be getting mine back this week. For now, I'm just putting a rebuilt prop back on just like what came off (3-blade 14x14). I'm hoping to get her out MM weekend as well. I'll have some firmer numbers for you.

I'm still waiting on the distributor to get back from Mallory's rebuild. It should be here by now! if I'm out MM weekend I'll gather some performance data for you. Wish I knew what prop I have!

The pitch/dia./manufacturer/date of mfg., etc is stamped on the hub or on the face of the hub behind the prop nut.

About an hour round trip with hookup and all.

But the wife said it was too late to go now. She'll meet me there on my way home from work tomorrow. Cousin (Super gear head / rocket scientist) is coming over to help me put the distributor back in so we can leave for the lake by noon Friday!

-Hijack-

Sorry but this could benefit others as well. I have the 13.5x19.5 OJ four blade on my X-1 with the RTP-1. I usually run stock ballast but would like to add more. Mysquestion is if this is even the correct stock prop, i don't think it is. Also what would you reccomend with out going crazy on torque and sacrificing too much top end. I don't know much about props so any help would be appreciated since i can't fins any elsewhere. Also prices for new props.

-Thanks, Marco

Marco

A good place to start would be our 14.25 X 14.5 LC XMP EDGE. Feel free to give me a call to discuss.

Thanks-

Glad to see a thread on the 240sc.
I was just bragging I had the boat 3 years and never had a prop miss hap. Guess what happened over the weekend........

I currently have a Nibral 4 blade I believe. It was dark and I forgot to look at the numbers when I put the boat up Sunday night. It is reparable but I still want a spare and looking at a modern upgrade.

I have the 454 with BW1:1. I top out at 40 mph with gps @ 4600rpm and an empty boat.

I am more concerned with hole shot to plane time. When I sack it with about 1200 lbs and 6 people, the wake is awsome but it is a bear to get on plane. Boat and trailer weigh 6400. I would estimate trailer is about 1200 and add weekend gear of 400, plus 1200 ballast, plus 800 people we are at 7600 lbs in the water.

Anyone with prop experience or input?

Mine should be coming back this week. :D They ended up having to do a small amount of fiberglass work. I asked the MasterCraft dealer (Bennett's--skibennets.com) what they recommended and they were telling me that they don't normally see a significant difference in performance without making a major change to pitch. So I went back with what I had before...13x13.

i have the 89 maristar with a 454. I am running a 13X13 4 blade stainless.I wakeboard with #1000 in the trunk and surf with #2000. Out of the hole is great but i dont push it with WOT. i can cruse at 40 mph at 4500 rpm. It is a tired big block with 1200 hours on it.I am thinking of going to a 13X14.5. same out of the hole but top end of what that boat was made for. 50 or so in chop. This winter i installed all new skins, carpet, a full legnth bench seat on the port side (we all surf regular) with a #1200 fat seat inside it.i installed the obsrevers seat on top of it with now a lot of storage under it. With this boat you dont need a locker sac. in fact it makes the surf wake bad so i turned the ski locker into a 60 qt ice chest. The 3 blue tops i have in the upfront under floor compartment is all that boat needs for front ballast.

I have a PS190 w/ 454HO. I bought it with a 3 blade 14x20. It had a good hole shot but it would turn too many RPM at WOT- 6K@48MPH. I changed to a 14.5x22 4 blade from OJ and its max RPM now is about 4700 at about the same speed (no speed improvement but it brought my RPM's down). I also tried an OJ 4 blade that was 13.5x20 and the RPM max was 5500+ and the top speed is about the same.

I've been told and am almost convinced that the max RPM should be your guide on prop choice. I think this is good advise but for the performance you might get one that will peek the RPM's but you stand a better chance of blowing something up, especially if you let somebody else drive your boat (bad idea).
