View Full Version : X-15 missing cleat?

Is it me, or does it seem like the X-15 is missing a cleat just about at the window level - or just in front of the window. Seems like this is not a problem on other models... I remember seeing the X-30 with 3 cleats per side, and my PS190 has cleats in the proper positions. But, unless I tie a fender on to the tower, I dont get any protection in the middle of the boat.

Thinking I might need to install a pair on each side. Anyone else notice or do anything about this?

You are absolutely right, when I ordered my boat last November, I asked for additionnal cleats just for that reason.

I don't understand why it's done correctly on the X30 and not on the X15 ?

I'm ordering cleats for the mid level... curious if anyone has any thoughts (or experience) on where best to place them?

Any pictures?

I bet its the size issue. My 45 has all three. I find it works better to tie the boat off to the front and rear cleat then wrap my bumpers around the tower legs. This works best on my boat because the tower legs are in the correct location to keep the bumpers againist the dock while the front and back cleats keep it tied up. You might try this.

The problem I found with tying the bumpers to the middle cleat is that it caused the bumper to really hang too low and with the bumper in the middle then you still need one on the front and rear.

My 230VRS only has two cleats, and the forward one is at the leading edge of the windshield where the bow curves too much.

I wish I had cleats there on my X14. I have to tie a fender to the rear tower leg to get one in the right spot.

Our X-30 ('05) only has 2 cleats per side. Personally, I don't mind, we've used fenders a grand total of once since we've owned the boat, but if you were docking regularly I can see where you'd want another set in the middle.

How is your 05 different then the 06 X-30 hull? And do you notice the front coming up alot and hoe the boat is in rough water?

Totally different hull. The '06+ is a larger, heavier boat. IIRC, the newer 230/X-30s are around 800 lbs heavier. I know they have more free-board and I think they are a bit wider.

The boat will porpoise some if all the weight is in the back. Move bodies forward or fill the center ballast about 1/2 full and it's all good again. We moved from a PS 205 to the X-30 and the X-30 handles rough water worlds better than the 205 did. It's not a true deep-v, but it's a good compromise for us, we get performance for watersports along with decent performance in rough water.

So the heavy boat will need more HP? I don't understand why they when to such a thing, then dropped it for 2008?

you just need different docks that have vertical poles and then you just tie in the middle... perfect.

We have the MCX for our '05 and it does fine. For the bigger boat... ?? Personally, I think I'd go with the larger engine in the '06+, but I haven't driven one so can't say for sure. I've only drooled over the new ones in the show room. :D

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what they've dropped for '08?

We had the dealer add midship cleats to our Maristar 215 even before we picked it up. We use them for fenders all the time.

Hey Sully, I looked at a pic of your 215 (pretty boat) and saw where you put the midship cleat... how do you like the position of that? And did it mount flush with the curvature of the fiberglass there?

Anyone else have a recommendation for cleat position? I was considering putting it a the bottom of the seam in the windows... but, not sure if it will be hard to get to that because of the tower.

SoCalBrew,
Thanks for the compliment!
I would like to have had the cleat even with the throttle, but this works good to.
It mounted very well with the curvature of the boat. It looks factory installed.
Another fine job by Midwest Mastercraft!
