2007 Report: Vermont Remains Nation’s Healthiest
Louisiana replaces Mississippi at the bottom

Vermont remains the nation’s healthiest state according to the 15 th annual rankings. Vermont took the honor for the sixth time in the past seven years in Health Care State Rankings 2007, a reference book of state health statistics published by Morgan Quitno Press of Lawrence, Kan.

“Vermont offers great access to primary care doctors, has a low teen birth rate and a high percentage of citizens covered by health insurance,” said Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press. “In addition, the people of Vermont are physically fit: it has one of the lowest obesity rates among states and some of the highest percentages of citizens who exercise.”

Following Vermont were Minnesota, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire, which was No. 2 last year.

At the opposite end of the rankings scale, Louisiana returned to last place, while Mississippi improved two spots to No. 48. New Mexico remained at No. 49. Also at the bottom were No. 47 Nevada and No. 46 Florida, which dropped five spots from last year.

The biggest gainer was Pennsylvania, which moved six spots to No. 23. Idaho dropped six spots to No. 24 and Florida, Wyoming, Indiana and South Dakota each fell five positions.

The 15th annual Healthiest State Award is based on 21 health-related factors that compares the 50 U.S. states in more than 500 health care categories. Factors considered include infant mortality rates, the percent of population not covered by health insurance, per capita expenditures for health care, percent of population lacking access to primary medical care, childhood immunization rates and percent of adults who smoke.

There is a wide range in each state! In CA (I always considered health state of the nation) that goes from the organic health nuts that work out everyday to the backwoods toothless hicks I saw out trout fishing near Nevada City. Same here in Indiana, from professionals in gold and glitz building to toothless crackheads in less than 30 minutes....

I wonder how our healthiness compares with other countries?

It's probably based on how responents of the survey -feel- at the time.

LOL...this is golf scoring! To your other point, we have a pretty inexperienced team coming up for the '07/'08 season. Could be easier to get in to see some games. ...always searching for the silver lining! :D

I don't know how they figure the rankings for this survey, but you have to say FLA is inflated by all the retirees...?

EDIT: Just read some of the factors and my assumptions about FLA have to make a play in it.

Number 4 Maine, we have the taxes to show for it. New Hampshire right in back of us and no income taxes at all.... I wonder if they know we can't eat the fish here because it is loaded with mercury?
