I am getting tired of seeing the grump of the month poll on the main page, so I figured it is time for another poll.

The marketplace has 2 of my favorite direct drives for sale right now.
Both have about the same amount of hours and the asking price is about the same.
Which do you like best?

The 2003 ProStar 197 35th Anniversary Edition
or
The 2006 ProStar 197 TT Edition

They make 100 TT's every year, but only 35 in 2003 of the Anniversary boat. '03 without a doubt.

I like to 2003 colors and since there are only 35, that makes it that much more desirable. I was never a fan of the red 06 TT... if I went the TT route I would get an '05 or an '07.

Depends on what you're looking to do. Clearly the 03 will hold resale value longer. The 06 is a better boat, it tracks and drives better and will ski better from the handle end. The 06 has DBW and a great pull to it, about 500 fewer pounds to carry around and as a result will make your skiing experience better. If you're going to keep it for a few years and then trade it you probably should go with the 03. If your wanting to ski hard and are going to keep the boat for a long time then go with the 06( pepermint patty is whqt we called them)

JohnnyB

My thought was just the opposite. If I was going to trade in a couple of years, I'd go with the TT. Its got everything you need and ready to go.

If I was going to keep it for a long time, I'd choose the 03 Anniversary Boat. I'd love to have that one in my garage. It's going to hold its value well and most certainly will be worth a lot if you take care of it, run it for 10 years and then look to upgrade.

Will the difference in ski-abililty (slalom skiing) be really that different? Just wondering, not that I'm thinking about buying one...

They took it out of the hull. The 06 is way more nimble of a boat than the 03 as a result.

Didn't know that. But that 500 lbs might be a wash with that tower on there (maybe not---what do towers weigh?). The nimbleness might have something to do with the new rudder on the 06 as well though.

G-man
04-23-2007, 11:32 AM
500lbs is a lot of weight to take out of a hull. I wonder where they took it from. A tower doesn't weigh near that much maybe 150lbs I think. I like the red one, add your own stars

I would go for the 03 35th. I was told that all the numbered 197s have the same hand crafted hull. I have a friend that has a 03 TT and you can't tell the difference in driving or wake. That and the 35th just looks better, and it has more detail and bling. I love mine.

It tops out at 53.8 mhp on the gps the way it is proped now. As long as you aren't running it wide open hanging the tong out on it, the gas is about the same. The s-charger made the biggest difference on the hole shot.

I know Steve. I know. Humor me baby. Here's the deal. We have covered this before, but I am gonna kick a dead horse. How many people actually USE the open bow portion? I mean really use it! The functionality of a close bow is FAR more important. You can stuff that underbow with TONS of Shiot! I currently have 3 wetsuits, 6 PFDs, 3 slalom skis, 1 barefoot boom, 2 boxes of parts and tools, 1 spare prop kit, 1 fire extinguisher, 1 barefoot suit, 4 ski ropes, and I can still fit my combos, and trick skis under there. Cant do that with a open bow. no place to stow stuff. Now, on bigger boats like Maristars, and X series boats, the open bow is a great idea! but not on slalom boats. at the risk of sounding like our friend Snootyskier, I dont see the reason for open bows on 197's. It just dont make sense to me. where do people put their stuff? I know there is storage under the sundeck, but not that much space.

I'm getting all obsessive compulsive about this. Somebody please buy these boats so I can get on with my life! ;) If I had to choose, I'd go with whichever had the better slalom wake/pull. Nobody answered my earlier question about that. I suspect the difference isn't that noticeable. I see the '03 has the 385 hp LQ9, which interests me. How does that compare to the MCX?

Depends on what you're looking to do. Clearly the 03 will hold resale value longer. The 06 is a better boat, it tracks and drives better and will ski better from the handle end. The 06 has DBW and a great pull to it, about 500 fewer pounds to carry around and as a result will make your skiing experience better. If you're going to keep it for a few years and then trade it you probably should go with the 03. If your wanting to ski hard and are going to keep the boat for a long time then go with the 06( pepermint patty is whqt we called them)
