What to you think of my new tow rig? Man, there are some crazy stupid people out there. I pulled the pic off another car and truck forum. It sure stirred up a discussion.

I am sure Larry's Tacoma could handle that trailer without breaking a sweat. :D
LOL ... that reminds me of a friend of mine who's 1 ton dually diesel Ford was down and he had to move a small bulldozer to another job site, he used his old '84 4x4 Nissan ... thankfully he didn't have to go far and it was on back county roads.

The stance looks very nice right now. Pictures definitely don't show a lifted trucks full height unless its a massive lift.

Pictures don't make my truck look like it has a 6in lift. In person its a lot bigger.

2002 Ford F-250 7.3L Powestroke Diesel. I'll drive this truck until the wheels fall off, it's my baby. My new baby as of April is the 1994 mastercraft prostar 205 behind it. My first boat, needs a buff, but the interior and engine is very clean. If you need a roof in TX let me know lol 😂

Yes, it's a 5 speed turbo diesel so it gets the job done no problem! Jk It would work but would not be safe for a longer distance. I use our 07 suburban or 2016 Ram 2500 to tow the slalom tug. I was actually surprised how well the little tdi tows though!

Woke her up from the Winter's Nap at Lake Cumberland,

Did a quick tour around the lake:

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g274/fstaslp/C61B8A0B-E729-4450-B2F2-65C94A0C5C7B_zpselgcnlfn.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/fstaslp/media/C61B8A0B-E729-4450-B2F2-65C94A0C5C7B_zpselgcnlfn.jpg.html)

Bundled her back up and brought her back to Indianapolis:

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g274/fstaslp/B254FB12-76A4-491D-A0CB-FA70D96B3DC8_zps4cuuttix.jpg (http://s58.photobucket.com/user/fstaslp/media/B254FB12-76A4-491D-A0CB-FA70D96B3DC8_zps4cuuttix.jpg.html)

The new (to me) F150 with the 6.2 handled it awesome. I got 11.6 MPG hand calculated on the trip home running between 70-80. My 2014 GMC Sierra would only get 8.7 on the same run.

I just tucked her into her resting spot for the summer, it is a barn of a friends who is letting me use it for free. Very incognito:

Corbin you're the one that lives in sister kissing country lolol

4wd on a truck isn't about trails, broseph. I have to pop mine in 4wd to back my boat in my storage unit since i'm on gravel going up an incline. Gotta get the trailer tires over the concrete lip entering the garage, and if I'm in 2wd my rear tires just spin and dig into the gravel because that conrete lip acts like a wheel chock to my trailer.

If I got a running start at it, I'd be fine, but not willing to do that with my minimal margin of error on either side of the guide poles and the garage.

Oh... then there's all that snow and ice that we get, and my twice yearly trips to Colorado to ski in the winter which require driving through mountains. There's also the rare instance that I'm going up a steep gravel hill pulling my boat (happened twice) that 2wd and 4hi didn't cut it. Had to drop into 4lo. I'm on BFG KO2's too, not the stock good year highway tires.

Resale is better too :)

So... size of the truck be damned, I'll keep my 4wd haha.

MC25
05-23-2017, 04:13 PM
I never really care about resale because I always sell for more than I paid anyways. I dont deal with snow, ice or anything like that, and if I have to, luckily I just bought another JKU a month ago for my girlfriend.. lol The ELD on my truck for the one time I needed it on a weird slope with soaked mud/grass.

So basically, My truck never sees anything but the occasional boat ramp and the street. huge waste of money for me on a truck. My JKU saw more trails in mud in 45 days than most 4x4s on this site lol

I forgot to get a good pic, but I towed the boat with the wife's Audi Q7 this past weekend. I think we will be taking her car a lot more in the future. It did very well and the driving features made the 5 hour drive so much easier.

Lift is 7.5" in the front, 5" blocks for rear axle. Tires are 375s or 37" by 13.5" wide. Wheels are 22x14".

It's 87". It will be very close with a 6.5" lift. i bet if you went with 35" tires you might have a chance. My garage is also 7ft and my last 2500HD had a 6" lift with 33" tires and i parked it in the garage every night!

Agreed, the notion of trail riding/crawling in a new fullsize is nuts. I managed to dent the bottom of both passenger side doors of my old 2500 ferrying in some chainsaws/gas/etc. on an old logging trail/access road at a place we trail ride. That was a one time experiment...

I guess it's a dry climate vs. (relatively) wet climate thing, but I do use 4wd regularly on my big trucks. Typically it's maneuvering a heavy trailer in a field or similar. Heck, I've used it on an extremely silted up boat ramp before.

What I don't personally understand is the 2wd lifted truck thing...Like a MC with a tower full of Wetsounds and no amplifiers. Exception being the prerunner style truck guys--they might get a "pass"!

MC25
05-24-2017, 01:37 PM
I built a prerunner, so I kind of get a pass lol.

the lifted 2wd thing is purely for looks. I think once you lift a truck you really negate any offroading ability whether its 2wd or 4 anyways, unless youre a sister-kissing mud bogger.

Aric how did you like those Toyo Open Country R/T's? Been eyeing those as I don't need a true mud-terrain tire but want something a little more aggressive looking then a straight all-terrain.

I run a set and love them. They are a little louder than the at2.. kinda a light mud tire sound. Balanced great and I have about 5k on mine with no Ill effects

running a set of 285/70x17 Toyo RTs on my 2500 Cummins, seem to be doing pretty good on wear but traction in clay/black mud leaves something to be desired. I have run a variety of heavier mud traction tires but they are all loud and haven't been able to get many miles before they are worn out.

I have never had good luck with Toyo tires. I find they are a softer tire and the tread on the All terrians are not very deep.

I run BFG A/Ts and they are the only tire I have seen 55k-60k tire life out of.

I have never had good luck with Toyo tires. I find they are a softer tire and the tread on the All terrians are not very deep.

I run BFG A/Ts and they are the only tire I have seen 55k-60k tire life out of.

my son went thru 3 sets of BFG A/T and only got 25-30k miles in our country, they work well in sand/sandy soil but the limestone rocks in our area eat them along with black gumbo/clay mud, they quickly become slicks as they don't clean out well, leaving you stuck.

He then ran 2 sets of Toyo Open Country M/T on his current truck with decent mileage (45-50k) but holy cow were they noisy and his fuel mileage stunk. The more worn, the louder they got.

I ran 2 sets of Nitto Trail Grappler M/T before going to these Toyo RTs. Both sets of the Nitto's were under 4/32 (won't pass inspection) before 30k miles. I drive to much to wear tires out that fast. I am still in the testing stage on the Toyo RTs as I only have about 15k miles on them so far, but they have a lot more tread still left over the Nitto's did at that same mileage... but they don't self clean in mud around here very well.

I would go back to Goodyear Duratrac but they don't offer a load range E in a 285/70r17 (or 295/70r17). I had those on my previous truck (but 16" wheel) and got over 50k miles out of two different sets.

both my son and I have 2500 4x4 Cummins, so a pretty heavy vehicle to start with ... the BFG A/T might work just fine on a half ton gas rig ... but would still get stuck in my area.

I find your description to fit perfect for the KO1 BFGs but the new KO2 I find to work a lot better in clay. I have used my truck to get around some at the hunting lease and the Mississippi red clay doesn't affect the now KO2s as much. The Toyo MTs will sling the clay out very easily.

I just like the ride quality, durability, and tread depth of the BFG ATs compared to Nitto and Toyo All terrains.

pmkkdx
05-25-2017, 05:51 PM
Good to know the BFG AT KO2 works better! I might have to give them a try when the Toyo RT need replacing. I know they are a good looking tire, but having to pull my son out on several occasions when he was running the BFG AT (10-15 years ago) on his old truck has me biased. Thanks!

Don't worry we don't go far. It's legal to double tow here as long as the first unit is 5th wheel. IMO it's a lot safer than the people pulling 30' campers with their 4cyl suvs.

Awesome ride! what size tires? I have 33s, BFG ATs 275/70/18s (10 ply) on my tahoe and it rides awful. I wonder if the heavier 3/4 ton chassis with the 10 ply tire makes for that much better of a ride. I realized after I bought them that being a 10 ply they are really designed for a 1 ton so that's why I'm obviously have ride quality issues. total newb move.

They look awesome though and they literally don't wear at all, so I got that going for me! I'll try to get a pic in a few.

Hammer

I have been spoiled by my diesel. It pulls the 45 like a dream. The 8.1 honestly struggles a bit. Does just fine till there's a hill on the highway.

Have any of you had issues with the 6L80E transmission?

I know the 4L60E's were junk for towing.

I think mine is the 4L80E (4 speed), but no, haven't had an issue. The only thing in the drivetrain was the transfer case. I have the "auto t-case" and did have the internal spring wear a hole in my t-case blowing fluid under truck and boat. Luckily found a shop in Butte MT that fixed it. There is a fix for this defect too, that was done at the same time.

Otherwise, good.

I believe I have 305/65r17's.

It is a stiffer truck overall but nothing too bad in my opinion.
