I don't trailer much, but when I do I no longer get sick to my stomach wondering how bad the old rig will hold up traffic. The Buick Enclave was nice, but too weak to pull 4,000 plus pounds of boat.

Thanks. I've heard good and bad here about the 5.3 but so far I'm pleased with it. It's been a while since I've owned a nice truck so these features might be no big deal, but the built in brake controller and hill descent compression braking are nice features - as is the heated steering wheel (that one I'm ashamed to say I really like - getting old and wimpy). I'm almost too embarrassed to post a pick of it now. With enough highway slop and road salt, a Wisconsin winter can make a Ferrari look like a my wife's old Prius.

We live 3 minutes from the Sacramento River, but we want to start taking the 205 to lakes for summer trips, so out with the Volvo XC90 V8 and in with a 2016 Ford Expedition with the 3.5l ecoboost.

It has a 9200 lbs tow rating, hd tow package with brake controller, and self leveling rear suspension. We didn't get the 22" wheels because the self leveling can't be had with the ccd option.

Haven't put enough miles on it yet to break it in, so haven't pulled the boat further than our neighborhood ramp yet.

The self leveling works, but requires a few miles to reach level. I know, because I pulled the boat out of the garage, it cleared no prob, and then put it back. New Year's Day we skied, went to put the boat back in the garage and ripped the door off the tracks with the tower. I would say it raised itself back up 3".

And to add further insult to my pain, a state of CA truck rear ended it today at a stoplight. No body damage but some of the welds on the hitch are showing signs of cracking.

Can't wait to drag the boat to Trinity and Tahoe this year.

I can't speak for the newer ones but I recently had a 2006 Expedition. Truthfully, I like GM products better, especially the look and drive of the Tahoes but the defining factor for me was the Ford's third row seat folding into the floor as opposed to having to be physically removed.

I didn't want another thing to clog up my, already tight, garage and it was also handy to pop up or down when out and about.

GM needs to get this feature in their products. No reason for them to have waited this long to offer this, it is a huge plus IMO.

Is the rear end of the Tahoe still a live, solid axle and Ford's is an independent rear? I thought that was the reason Tahoe's seats still have to be removed....not enough space for them to fold into floor with solid axle.

I also wish GM would get the number pad to unlock vehicle without keys or fobs.

The full size trucks and SUV's are still body on frame and solid rear axle. Only way to get the big GVW's and towing capacities.

GM full size SUV's went with fold flat third row seats in 2015.

I should have driven a Tahoe, but it wasn't on the radar. I like the Sequoia, but to get the air suspension, you have to get the Platinum Trim and it's only offered in 7 seats. Here's some of the reasons we chose the Expedition.

1)Ecoboost - beast of a motor and decent on gas if you stay out of it. We're going to be towing over 100 miles maybe three times a year. I don't need a big block the rest of the year.

2)Self Leveling rear suspension - it uses nivomats which are load bearing shocks. they have internal valving that increases the pressure inside. Simple, no electronics, and cheap to replace compared to air compressors, bags, sensors and hoses and valves. This was a new feature for the 2015 and 2016 expeditions.

3) power fold third row - we have three kids and they have friends, but I need cargo room. I hate having to crawl in and out of a vehicle moving seats up and down, especially to drop off friends 5 minutes down the road. We had an XC90 and the third row seats were easy to setup but still a time suck.

4) the interior is still hard plastic - way easier to clean than the newer fancier interiors. I like nice stuff, but I hate micromanaging kids to keep things clean. I bought seat covers, and full rubber mats and when we sell it in ten years, everything underneath will be clean and new.

5)I had a 2007 Expedition (same body style, slightly different dash) and put 130000 on it with nothing but brakes, tires, and oil.

Now they have power fold rear seats and the second row is power folding. For Chevy you can use the Chevy MyLink app on your phone now to unlock the vehicle. I do this all the time and leave my keys in the truck. You can even start the vehicle and sound the panic alarm....

It's amazing how popular black wheels have become. Aside from looking great, they are quite a bit cheaper than chrome. The majority of truck wheels I have sold in the last couple years have had a black or black and machined finish.

roadster02
01-17-2016, 01:49 PM
Is that black paint or another finish? How do they stand up to the normal wear that a rim gets from rocks, sand, salt, other debris?

Mine seem to stand up to whatever I throw at it.. Snow, mud, sand, (water obviously). I mean they'll scratch with debris like anything. But I have a good amount of tire until I hit the wheel. I went off roading at my moms house. They had just had a stormm and it knocked over quite a bit of trees. I moved a lot of them with my truck but there were some I just drove over.. I didn't have any issues or scratches.

We had to head home by Noon. Kids got to ski that day, but I got my exercise shoveling. Still couldn't get out with those factory 19.5 tires. Friend showed up with his Ford. He wanted my spot and was willing to pull me free. No way I was going to let a 250 Ford pull my 5500 Ram out. I'd never hear the end of it. We agreed to use his rig as an anchor and I Winched myself out. I ordered new front tires the following day. At nearly $900 for a pair, and w/ only 10k on the rig, I just did the fronts. Wouldn't have needed the winch had I had them on, I suspect. It was quite the morning.

You don't have to do it. It's just that or pull the motor, and you do it with all makes. fords just blow up more than any of them haha

You'd have to ask Corbin. I know he can pull the cab off a truck by himself in about 15 minutes lol

You don't have to on previous trucks.. But man is it nice to stand there next to it and not lean over the fenders.

Yea it's possible with special tools and a lot of patience. but I'm not going to do it. I have lifts and I'm not scared to use them. 6.0s are pretty easy to pull the cab on.. 6.4s suck because of fords captured nut design. The last 6.0 I pulled the heads off of I had both heads at the machine shop before lunch, I'd still be trying to get one head off with cab on.

Nope, just a few targeted blows with a hammer on the firewall and a shortty socket. I used an engine hoist to lift the heads off and back on. Really wasn't that bad. I learned a lot doing it. If I was a mechanic and did this on a daily basis it would have gone much smoother. I did a few other things while I was in there. Changed the oil cooler, egr, oil tubes, bullet proof stuff. Upgraded the ficm, coolant filter, alternator. Soon will be new turbo, water/meth injection, injectors, regulated return. You get the idea. It's a towing beast. It's awesome pulling my 5er and being able to pass at will. Just have to keep an eye on egts. The next group of mods will hopefully solve that.

I have a 3.5L ecoboost (although 2013) with the 3.55's, and it has no problem pulling a loaded truck and loaded 20' boat around. I go to lakes with lots of hills around them (ozarks, table rock, etc) and it rarely drops down to 4th gear when climbing a hill. It usually stays in 6th, but will go to 5th for most climbs, and rare to find it dropping more than a single gear. I wouldn't hesitate at all have the 3.55's.

That being said, if I did it over again, I'd get the 3.73's. Gas mileage isn't awesome with any of them, so might as well get the tall gears.

I bought a tahoe Sunday after selling my dmax truck. 2004, third row, 4.8, super clean rig.. Just wondered how they would handle something like my old star. I think it'll do the trick Corbin, as long as you're not towing long distances etc. I have not experience with the 4.8 though, that may make a big difference.

Dead nuts on. The 4.8l is tough. I did just about everything to make it better... tuned, exhaust, 3.73 gears. I ended up selling it after my wife (then GF) told me she would never go on a trip with the boat again if I did not get something that could tow better. The real kicker was when we were climbing a grade and her family passed us in a 35' motorhome full of people, supplies and water with a 23' nautique in tow. They blew by me like I was standing still. That was the last straw.

Thanks for the Info. It probably wont see boat towing duty for a while unless we use it to pull Neils x2 to centerhill. I have access to a few different diesel trucks I can long distance tow with.

Really considering doing a dmax swap in it. I've got about 75% of the parts sitting in the shop already.

Too good of deal to pass up this go around. I did gears unlike the last few trucks, so the drivability is crazy good.

Fair enough. To me it's one of those things that if you need it even once, it's worth it's weight in gold. Also for resale, but your truck, your dinero, your choice.

Great looking truck man. That looks killer but man you have some haters.

Not that I care but are the launches in Texas that good that you don't need 4wd? While I seldom use 4wd, it makes me a lot more comfortable to know that I have it and I can get out of any situation possible. With a 7k boat behind me its a great insurance policy...

Honestly, I've used some sketchy ramps and I haven't needed it. Even bone stock, the ramps I use are completely usable with 2 wheel drives. Only time need it would be when I'm out being stupid in mud, which this pavement pounder will never see lol

It's the 4.0 V6. It's been an awesome vehicle so far, I have about 130k miles on it, bought it with 67k. Towed the boat pictured from Baton Rouge to Lake Ouachita with 4 adults and 2 large dogs in the truck and 5 days worth of camping/boarding gear in the boat and while you could feel it back there the 4Runner didn't skip a beat. The gas mileage wasn't great however (10 going up, 8 coming back).

Dump in some SeaFoam just to head off any trouble. If you're using fuel w/o ethanol you shouldn't have any trouble; it didn't sit that long.

For batteries, I have 2 Battery Tender Jr's. They work great and cost less than 40.00 each.
