I'm out in Valley City but the boat is down by Fergus. County called for a county wide no wake zone within 300 ft of shore. Water on our lake is no higher than the previous 5. Ugh....

Finally used the burb to tow the star today. Around 110 miles total towing. Towed better than expected! Not sure on fuel economy (I don't care anyway just curious)

Had a guy at the boat ramp beg me to prove the burb to him.. I was afraid he would pay me on the spot and I would have to walk home!

I thought the Raptors soft rear suspension made it a less than optimal tow vehicle?

On the contrary....as you can see from the pic, I have little or no rump sag, and the ride underway is better than any other tow vehicle I've owned (i.e. GMC Denali, Lexus LX470, etc.). In addition, the additional track width and sway control of the Raptor makes it more stable and surefooted than any of my other tow vehicles as well. BTW, I have almost 500lbs of tongue weght and total trailer weight above 5500lbs and no helper springs or bags. Stock setup.

Ford change something in the rear ends? That wasn't the case the first couple years of production.

Mine is a 2011 and I don't think anything was changed from the 10 to the 11 model years. Mine (and all of em) also has the E-locker...which is also a great addition on a slick ramp. Later years have a Torsen up front which helps in some off-road conditions. The ratio is 4.10 so it has some ballz out of the hole.

As far as the width, the Raptor is 7" wider than the other F150's. Simply put, I am not sure why others have reported any issue with towing with a Raptor, I've had a loaded 8000+ lb box trailer with an equalizer hitch on mine and had no issues at all. I've probably put 5000 miles on mine with the boat in tow and it is a pleasure to tow on every level.

Good to know. I was under the impression that the rear suspension was pretty soft. I've seen a lot of them with the tongue down low, and heard that mileage wasn't so good when towing. Thanks for the info.

Can't explain the others you've seen, you see my pic, it aint squattin. And mileage???? What's that?

Raptors get crappy mileage, period...HOWEVER....It get's better mileage than my Lexus LX470 everywhere, and it doesn't demand Premium. Lexus when towing got 10 mpg of 93 octane, Raptor gets 12 on regular.

Honestly, I really don't care that much about mileage, I would just get all tense and would probably start oggling the rear end of Prius hybrids...gawd forbid. IN-ADDITION, getting all bound up about tow vehicle mileage when towing a boat the burns 8-10 gallons per hour at best kinda lacks some logic in my book.

We did the Wisconsin River dinner cruise Friday night just outside of Rhinelander. It was awesome. Good food, and a great time. We were four for of the 12 people on the boat? If you are in the area it is worth it. Only $20 a person.

Here's a pic of my 04 Titan and Xstar on the way to Table Rock lake. Truck did an excellent job pulling the boat for the 6 - 7 hour trip although I didn't push it too hard (65 - 70 mph) cause I'm pulling a single axle. -- Had a tire blow out on me a couple years ago going 75 mph and that was enough to make me slow down a little.

I don't think it was a lot of sag. I think it's just the way it's on the side walk in the picture. It did a good job. Lots of hills in my area so it had all the power I needed it just ran at a higher RPM then I would run it. I'm not a fan of pulling a hill at 4000 RPMs at 65 mph when the diesel pulls it at 70 at 2200 rpm. I also like the idea of my tow rig weighting more then my boat. :D

Nice rig! Is it the camera angle, or is your hitch too low?

It is too too low, but it's an easy fix with this ball hitch mount.

If he has to do a panic stop he will be able to inspect the underside of his bow by looking up out of the front of the car windshield. That is if the car is not totally flattened, not sure if the roof was made to support a large boat.

The only thing it didn't have that our fords do is the trailer sway controlling.

IIRC Chevy/GMC has had sway control since 2013 and Toyota has had it standard on the Tundra since 2011..

I wouldn't rely on these stock electronic systems as a substitute for a mechanical sway control system.. The electronic system that comes stock is a passive system that applies the brakes/cuts engine power once sway starts. A mechanical system is considered an active system which typically stops sway before it starts.

and towing a 45 with a Highlander is gutsy... highlander is rated at 5000#, X45 dry weight is 4600# (add fuel, gear & trailer)

It really was an amazing drive - except for the "in your face" red - was a complete sleeper. It had a lot of engine mods and you could hear it coming from down the street - hauled like a champ though. Pulling the boat out of the water was a bit tricky as it was a fairly low car. :)

Did the heat discolor any of the chrome plating on the bumper (if there is a chrome finish, hard for me to tell)?

I like those lights. I am looking for a solution to light that rear area to accommodate my back-up camera. Always too dark to see much outside of direct sunlight.

Where did you find them? How many beers did it take to allow Buddy to start grinding?

My bumper is painted, so I'm not sure about the chrome. If you do get some, make sure you get the back up harness from rigid! They tap into your reverse light wire on your trailer harness, so they come on automatically when you put it in reverse, while still has a switch override.

Okay, I'll confess. Towing the boat was not the sole reason for the new rig. The Chev handled that in spades. The problem was I bought a camper that was, well, just too big for the Chev AND the boat (or race trailer). Like a monkey riding a football:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-r0YVRmquFOM/U_zKu0kdvGI/AAAAAAAADi4/zcwxG57Dqz4/w960-h540-no/Okanagan.jpg

That camper, dry, put us 1,000 over cargo cap (less over GVWR, but considerably over). Wet (we had to travel dry due to weight) and loaded with gear (and beer), I would have been way north of a ton over cargo cap (all goodies and passengers considered, about 1.5 ton). Hadn't even gotten to adding the boat into the mix. However, I wasn't all that worried as I had done extensive HD suspension mods to the Chev, it handled it just fine and they have a very strong box frame....That is until I started thinking about my boat's tongue weight after seeing this image of the same model camper making quick work of a Ford (although I admit Ford 350/450 of this era did have a weaker frame behind the cab):

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1piqLDBnTUE/VLapGt9b2pI/AAAAAAAADxc/TNVjc_U3eR8/s640/frame.jpg

So, now I have nearly 10k before I top out this rig's GVWR.

deminimis
01-15-2015, 12:18 AM
Same camper, but I'm doing extensive mods so all but that last 1.5 foot will sit on the flatbed (need room for the genny exhaust and poop tube). Already shortened the propane box as it hung about 5" lower than the camper bottom (having to go to 20# tanks, down from 30# tanks). Building a new base out of 200 ft of 1x1.5 T6 alumn. Not only should that address some new upward forces, but it will lower the camper by .5". Had the flatbed installed low. Thus, I wont have too big a gap b/t the cab and cabover (plus lower COG). 60x24x16 below deck boxes getting fab'd in Feb. 8' top boxes (to fill the camper space should get fab'd in Feb or early March. Those boxes will be great for snow skis, kites and kiteboards, or whatever. Below boxes for air compressors, tools, bbq and maybe, someday, a small diesel genny. Toys on top, tools down low. I also have to mod the FB skirt so I can install a SuperHitch Magnum (I use a superhitch extension, so gots to have the SuperHitch). Nerf bars/steps going on this weekend. Buck Stop Baja winch bumper when it shows up (already a week late). Tons of work before me and not a lot of time to get it done.

deminimis
01-15-2015, 01:27 AM
I'll bag the rear, but that's about it for now. Perhaps a 2" leveling, but maybe not. It's beefy. When I had my Chev, suspension was the first thing as the IFS was relatively weak. I had an Ultra Ride rear suspension on a previous rig, which I loved, but that's around $4k and if I tore a bag in Baja, or a walmart parking lot for that matter, I'd be dead in the water as the leaf suspension is removed completely with that mod. Yup, just some helper bags out back for this rig.

Why this over an RV??

deminimis
01-15-2015, 12:51 PM
Did the RV for a while. Having a single purpose rig, and making payments, insurance, etc. doesn't make a lot of sense for us. We also have to have a truck. Better to just have a truck that we use for many things (including hauling hay and horses (unfortunately)). Unless you start getting well into the $100k+ RVs (Earth Roamer, etc), RVs just don't do well with many of the places we go. Also, RVs loose value like nothing else out there and are often poorly crafted (our RV was an exception to this, but it was too nice for Baja, Moab and even weekends up at the ski resort). Hard to find a RV with 4WD unless you spend a whole lot and even then, they can be limiting. Also, I want the kids in proper seats with proper seat belts, not riding in the back of an RV, so finding a crew cab chassis RV narrows the field even more. Would be nice to have an Eco Roamer, Earth Roamer something built on a MAN chassis or one of the many offerings the Aussies put out, but I never started a .com, so it's not going to happen. However, many of them aren't any bigger than a large truck camper (some, of course, are massive). In a few years I'd like to build my own truck camper. I have the vision, the skills and shop, but I certainly do not have the time. Some the the stuff I'm doing with this project is done with an eye towards that, however. Whether that happens, who knows. Some day (many years from now) I'll get to retire. When that happens I want to say "adios" for a decade or so and hit the seas in a 45' catamaran.

However, once I got it, I redid much of it as it could have been done better (springs were too weak for the 10k weight, shocks were Ranchos that were woefully inadequate, kept breaking hubs as the rotor housing wasn't clearanced correctly, etc.). Had the springs custom curved, added one to the front and two to the rear, custom valved remote rez Bilsteins (which required I build all new mounts) and Dynalock hubs cured all the handling problems (it was a two handed, white knuckled, porposing disaster going down the road before). Then, we outgrew it.

Yes. I thought about doing single Conti's for off road use, but I too would have to go big to maintain the cargo cap. It would also require a lift (was thinking Kelderman, like on the Earth Roamers). That's a ton of money to do all that. The main reason I was interested was the ability to air down when on those brutal Baja trails. It's just too much $, and one guy with a 5500 was only getting around 18k miles out of them. At approx $500 a pop, that's a lot of money flying out the window. So, I'll just stick with the factory 19.5 wheels, drive slower, and have my teeth chatter for the relatively few times we travel Baja. In fact, since I haven't reconfigured the bed into a torsion-free mounted setup, I will try to stay mostly on pavement for our next trip down there (I'll get around to the torsion-free set up this Summer).

deminimis..... your contribution to the tow rig thread.... best one by far. Heck it could be it's own thread! I've been thinking about how I might tow the boat with an RV - was looking at the 4wheel pop ups for the 1500 and quickly realized I'd want to upgrade the truck as I would quickly be at or beyond the towing capacity.

Love your new toy and can't wait to see how you build the rest of it - I vote you START A THREAD!!

Thanks VP. I'm just in the early stages of a build thread on Expo. If you are set on a pop up camper, might I suggest a Hallmark? When researching our first truck camper in '09, their campers seemed to be a the top of the heap (quality for cost) when it came to pop ups. Now they let you decide the structure material (should one buy new). http://www.hallmarkrv.com/ A bit bummed they use T5 instead of T6 for the alumn option (T6 has nearly twice the strength). However, they now have a composite framing material too, which is very exciting. They make shortbed and models appropriate for 1500s, so perhaps one of those would fit the bill. Sometimes used ones show up (seems the smaller ones), so that's always a good option.

Picked this up last night.

2006 Acura MDX.

It will handle the less than 3000lb 89 190 with ease I hope.

Anyone have experience towing with one of these? I read a couple threads and sounds like a lot of people use them to tow a lot more than what I will.

Just need to get a sticker in the back window to make her official!

Thanks for the compliments. I didn't test drive the Fords when we got our Dodge. I wanted to get try a Cummins engine for a change. When Ford went away from the 7.3 (which my old Ford had) I didn't like what I was hearing from the newer Ford diesel owners so we went a different route. I loved my old F-350, it was a stout truck that could pull anything. The only problems I had were in the front end and I had to replace the transmission after lending my truck out (don't ask, long story). I'm looking forward to testing the hauling strength in our new rig.

In good humor, We upgraded the tow vehicle a few months ago. This was the 1st pull. Unfortunately using as utility trailer, not for sleds.

Hope to get the boat soon now that ice is gone.

Fortunately I only tow 2x a year. Hard to justify the F350 for that, so it went away.
