Just ordered a custom made trailer. Over here MC trailers are not allowed/very difficult to get allowed to operate, disc breakes (which make sense) are not allowed.

Since I recently bought the boat I also had an excuse to upgrade the car :D

Will be able to post pics soon!

Brandon, I love these trucks. I bought my first diesel 7.3L 2001 4x4 crew, had it almost a year. Got larger exhaust and tuner. I am getting 20 to 21 mpg highway (no trailer) if I keep the speed under 70.

Besides the spontaneous combustion, I think the 458 is the hottest thing on the planet, as far as sub-supercars go. If you add in the spontaneous combustion, it's unarguable. :D

Awesome car! Just be careful what you park it next to. :firejump:

This one caught my eye with the color combo. I would of never ordered it this way, but when I saw it on the lot it looked nice. The pictures really don't do it justice and I like the fact that it's not a color combo. you'll see everyday.

That's Okeeheelee in West Palm Beach, FL. Got down here last Monday afternoon. Took me four hours to dig out the boat & truck. This place is a slalom utopia! I'll be here until Thursday or Friday. I'm easy to spot, I'm the ONLY 96 PS and one of the VERY few MC's. This is Nautique country.

This is from last October, only the second time I had the boat in the water. After this, it went into storage for the Winter. To date, I've not pulled anyone yet with this, my first MC, as it was too late in the season for us. Obviously, I am excited about Spring.

The Honda Pilot (my wife's car) does a pretty good job of towing the X-10.

Nice! The only thing I noticed on my 6 hour trip home with the boat was the gas gauge moving faster. It averaged 11mpg the whole way back, but I would assume that is similar to other V8 truck based platforms when towing. I am going to do some slotted rotors and better brake pads this spring, since my trailer does not have brakes. Other than that, Im good to go. 4-wheel self leveling suspension works great, the factory trailer wiring is awesome, and it still drives like a BMW. I am thinking of upgrading to the turbo diesel X5 in a few years when they drop into my price point too.

I have chatted up a few owners at the ramp with the X5 diesels and they all love them for towing. They weren't towing MC's but they all loved the diesel in the X5's. How can you go wrong towing with a diesel??? I love towing with my diesel but mine doesn't come from Munich.
Tried to talk my old man into a X5 diesel but he decided he wanted the 4.8 gasser instead.

Mine is a diesel too and yes, you notice that there is a Star behind you but it is still ok to tow/drive. Especially with the 8 gear transmission which mine has. I could imagine that 'only' having half of the weight behind you (Prostar) you won't really notice.

My decision was to go with the expensive X5 because I need the car to travel as well and I did not want to have two cars, one for towing and one for the normal usage. It uses about 9 Liter per 100 km without and 10.2 with the boat behind so not much of a difference there.

No offence, but most of europe will fit into the back pocket of most US or AUS states. Power and torque figures of most deutsch diesel vehicles are awesome, but out here they don't last. Where the roads are paved and wide,BM's AUDI, VW are all wonderful motor vehicles, but on australian roads that go forever or off road toyota is king. BTW I am a GM fan.

dihrdskir, hate to upset a fellow aussie, but the guy who works for me has a 5yr old Prado with leaking injectors. $3000 fix it job, a common problem apparently. He is not a happy fellow, his prado is his pride and joy. The Toyota's aren't as bullet proof as they used to be. Hilux's are also very lightly built nowadays compared to 10 years ago too. Have fun.

For a few years, I pulled my Sea Ray with a Volvo XC60, which was a great vehicle. At the time, my reading found that the Volvo XC60 and BMW X5 were comparable in that way - - - good tow vehicles which were a blast to drive when you weren't towing anything.

When I upgraded to the X-10, however, I needed a bigger tow capacity, so the XC60 went away and we got a Honda Pilot instead. The Honda is definitely more capable as a tow vehicle but not as fun to drive as the XC60.

isn't the tow capacity of the Honda Pilot like 4500 lbs? i would think with the X10 and trailer you would be very close to the limit.

i liked the looks of the bmw x5 diesel but the touareg tdi tow capacity was higher so i went with that.

You're right about the Pilot - - - 4500 lbs. So, I'm right at the limit with the X-10 running along behind. However, the Pilot pulls it without a problem and (just as importantly), stops quickly enough when needed. I feel the boat back there but never feel like it is the one in charge.

Personally, I was interested in something with a bit more towing capacity, but my wife really liked the Pilot for its 8 passenger seating, economy and ride.

We also are a mere 3 miles from our regular launch site, so that helps. I did tow it 30+ miles to our winter storage place last Fall and the Pilot did just fine.

This Summer, we want to tow the boat to the nicer lakes just north of us and that will give me a better idea of how the Pilot does on longer trips.

you must have the 4wd Pilot? We were leaning heavily towards a Pilot (2wd) when we upgraded my wife's 4Runner in 2011 but the 2wd model Pilot towing was only rated for 3500 lbs where the 2wd 4Runner was 5000 lbs ... main point that we stayed with the new 4Runner over the Pilot.

XStar08
02-20-2013, 03:24 PM
Well, seems (again) that it depends on what country you are living in regarding the allowed tow capacity. For example over here the X5, Touareg, Q7, XC90, Landcruiser, Range, Defender are rated the same, 3'500kg meaning about 7'000 lbs which is the max. for non active braking trailers. To be able to tow an XStar you need to have 3500kg capacity. XC60 is not allowed to tow such loads nore are most of the other SUV's (not even the Nissan Pathfinder is).

I totally agree re the non real off road capabilities of X5 and Co. but that's not what I need and not what they have been built for. If I would live out in the fields/forrest remotely I would use a Toyota Landcruiser (older model) or a Defender.

That said I would prefer to drive around with a 911 instead of a Truck or even X5 but when it comes to towing on very well maintained roads for me the X5 is the best to have (not re the relation price/amount of car you get of course). I also test drove the Range Sport but it was not half as fun to drive as the X5. Not to speak about the BMW IDrive, if you had that once you will miss it even though Mercedes and Audi copied it (but the usability is far better with BMW's system).

Yes, the 4WD Pilot is what we have. I was actually looking at the Toyota FJ Cruiser (because I love the look of it and the way it drives), but my wife wanted something with more seating capacity and the Toyota dealer had a used Pilot with 27k miles for a steal.

The Pilot has done admirably well towing the X-10 to date and my wife loves it for hauling around our boys. I have to admit that it is a nice vehicle to drive.

(I still wish I had the FJ Cruiser, but we settled on a good compromise.)

This makes sense to me. I have that part of me which would love to have a dedicated tow vehicle with Brahma-bull like towing capacity, but I have the reality of needing vehicles which meet other needs, as well.

However, our Honda Pilot does a nice job towing our X-10. It also hauls kids, camping gear, bicycles, skis, dog, etc., admirably well, and keeps our possessions dry. And, my wife would rather drive this than a pickup with greater towing capacity.

Me - - - well, I didn't get my FJ Cruiser to tow the boat (see my earlier post), but my wife's choice of the Honda Pilot allowed me to buy a VW GTI, which is a blast to drive around town.

I love to drive. Since I can't have dedicated vehicles for towing, for long trips, for performance, for hauling kids and gear - - - I think we have done okay.

I have an 09 X-15 that I currently tow with 1/2 Suburban but am looking at a VW Toureg diesel. My Sub has a load leveling suspension which kicks in and I was a bit concerned as the new VW does not. I wondered if anyone has towed with this vehicle and if there is much squat. Pictures would be great.

Mthon7 - Search Mattscraft and ttu on this board. I know they are both owners of TDi Touaregs because i started a thread a while back asking the same question. They both chimed in with great info about their vehicles. All the reviews on the new body style ('11 and up) TDi T-regs have been so good, it kept itching at me to get one. After looking casually since December, my wife and I pulled the trigger on a used '12 with 10k miles this weekend! I will get pics up with the boat attached as soon as I can go get it from winter storage. So far, we are averaging 29 mpg in casual driving around town. Absolutely astonishing to me!!!

I hope you're planning to buy a drop hitch? Man that prop gurds gotta be an inch off the ground... You'd benefit from having more tongue weight as well

Thanks

The only MC's I've towed are a PS 190, Picklefork X2 and X15. All on MC tandem trailers.
Comparing the X2 to the X15, the X15 tows much lighter with respect to tongue weight.
When I hitch my X2 up to a F150, it squats bigtime.
X15 on the back of the same generation Ford Expedition (Expe loaded to the gills with 2 families (8 people) and gear stacked to the roof behing the 3rd seat) does not sag it much at all.
Shouldn't be too bad hooking up a 15 to it. (Compared to the X2 that was mentioned w/ MattsCraft)

Not to be the towing police, but having owned a Honda Ridgeline which has same towing as the pilot, you do realize that your towing rating is based on driver only and no additional passengers or gear. If you fill the thing with people and gear, the x10 is I think over 3000lbs plus trailer, plus any gear or fuel on the boat, I can't see how you won't be over the tow rating.

I pulled a 21' wakeboard boat with my ridgeline and it pulled fine (but did work hard going up hills, often dropping down into 3rd gear to keep 55mph) but I never had anyone else in the car with me. If you tow over the limit and get into an accident, the plaintiff's attorney may well take every penny you own.

It's already got a 2 inch drop tow bar. I am replacing the entire hitch this spring, but I don't think it will be any lower. Why would I want more tongue weight? It tows really well the way it is

It looks pretty level to me, maybe a little high in front but hard to tell from that pic. Put a carpenters level under the trailer's frame rail behind the spare and see if it's level. (on level ground of course)
Dropping the tongue 1-2 inches won't gain you any tongue weight, and it's the correct trailer for that boat so you're ok. You could always put a heavy duty scale under the tongue to see where you're at.

Tongue weight is limited to 600lbs, and Im no where near that. Ill put a level on it this spring, but I think its OK. Its a self-leveling suspension too, so it won't ever sag and raise the rear of the trailer. It does rub the prop guards backing into my driveway, but I blame that on the driveway and not the trailer. I have ripped the front lip off 2 of my cars on the driveway too for not going at an angle or a bit to fast.

Hahaha, right! Thanks. This is my 4th Dodge Ram. I like the styling also. I did drive a new GMC Z71 before I pulled the trigger and it too was very nice. I do't see how you can go wrong with any truck these days. They are full of power / torque. I also drove a new Nissan Titan. I can say this I did not like it. the seats were extremely uncomfortable. They offered zero support. Also the fir and finish was not there. Not to mention if I going to pay that sort of money I want a towing machine. the HP / torque was the lowest in it's glass. I matted the pedal a few times during my test drive and go no response. Funny the dealer guy in the back seat was saying feel all that power? No I didn't. Anyway thanks guys for the comments. I hope everyone is gearing up for the boating season as I am. Stay safe stay healthy see you on the water!

@Covi, nice truck. We have a 2011 Ram 1500 Sport and love it. We have had no issues and it after 50,000km, and it tows our X15 well. The gas mileage drops significantly with the boat behind but that is to be expected. The only thing that we need to do it put some new tires on it. The stock goodyears suck in the snow and we got tons this year

Thats funny you say that. I am probably going back to gas on my next truck. The new diesels suck for fuel economy and you pay a huge premium for the engine. Makes no sense anymore to go diesel unless your towing over 11K.

nickespi

It just sucks that I only get about 9-10 mpg when towing. The 5.7 sucks down the gas. When the boat isn't hooked up, I still only get about 12.5 mpg.

Thanks for the compliment on the boat--we've only had it since September but I think we got a great deal and have put a good bit of sweat equity to make it even better.

As for the van. . . that was a result of a merge difficulty on my wife's part resulting in a true fender bender. When we got the $650 from the insurance company to have it fixed, we did the sensible thing and spent it on a wakeboard, a second battery, charger and some new ropes. :) This poor van's been scratched, scraped, and scuffed more ways than I can keep track of so it seemed that fixing a fender wrinkle was kind of pointless.

I have become more sensitive to trailers being level since I got my '77 with a tandem where it is more critical. You will have better visibility with your trailer being leveled as it will bring the bow down. I would also be worried about the prop, but I understand how parents can be about some things.

mzimme
03-25-2013, 11:43 AM
Definitely run your trailer level, maybe even a little low on the tongue. It will protect your prop and be easier to load on the trailer at the ramp. Our boat's weight is pretty evenly spread on each side of the axle, you shouldn't see too much sag on your escape by running the tongue a little low.

The boat buddy can be a pain, but it's somewhat useful. I covered the top of mine with carpet attached with contact cement to keep the plastic from getting on the hull. When loading, after it clicks, I always tighten the winch to keep the boat from pulling on the pin and getting it stuck. When unloading, I always release the boat buddy pin on level ground. That should keep it from getting stuck and making you look like a rookie on the ramp.

I have been jones-ing to get a picture to put in this thread since February. We got a new-to-us 2012 Touareg Tdi in February and yesterday was the first time I hooked it up to our X2. We also spent a good hour or 2 letting her practice backing the trailer around and down the ramp. Weve always had my buddies ride with who know how to back the trailer but I have been wanting her to learn. We got alot of strange looks from the fishermen thinking we were crazy to get in the water and go skiing.

We also spent a good hour or 2 letting her practice backing the trailer around and down the ramp.

When we bought our first MC, I took my wife to an empty school parking lot and just said, "Play around. Discover. Figure out what happens when you do this/that."

Then I gave her a challenge of backing across the lot and threading the needle between two signposts that were about 15' apart. I timed her first attempt, it was about 1'30". I said, do it under 60 seconds and we'll go for ice cream.

She did it in 36.

it has plenty of power. I have pulled quite a bit heavier than the xstar and it still has plenty of power still, but only gets 8-10 mpg with that kind of weight. I was on the fence with a f250 diesel but didn't want to sacrifice ride quality and the quite ride. Overall I'm happy with it.

+1... It's rated to tow 11,000 lb. but won't get the best mpg doing it. But I don't tow the boat very often, it will be in a lift during the summer. So wasn't worth the extra coin to me for a diesel

So far it has been OK, nothing to rave about - you know it's back there. I don't get in any hurry, no extra power like a diesel would have. Even some pickups have all horsepower and no torque in the useable range, with a load you would be better off pedaling:(. We won't see the Q5 diesel here until July or September. The handling with the trailer is better than the single axle of the '88 ps190 this replaced, and this one has brakes which the old one did not. Overall I am comfortable with it. I've had a CDL since they were required so I've been towing large loads for 20 plus years.

Tow rating is maxed out (4400lbs). I agree on the Q7 but the Q5 was purchased months before we considered buying a boat. The designated driver did not like how big the 7 was. Would like to get her into a TDI T-reg next. I have a 50 mile daily commute so I need something that sips fuel, not drinks it like a frat boy.:D

CottagerGreg

Q5 will struggle especially with the 2.0T engine. The Touareg or Q7 TDI are the way to go. both will handle most mastercrafts well.

If you get the Q7 or the Porsche get the Air ride.

2011 Cadillac Escalade and 2013 X55. Matching 6.2L engines. Does pretty good towing, works pretty hard to go 70+ uphill on the highway. Have to say that the 55 is a little intimidating when you look back and see it in the rear view mirror.

When your boat and tow rig engines match, you win the MCOCD Grand Prize! :) Sweet combo!

Bought a new tow rig last week. Haven't exactly picked it up yet, getting some goodies installed on it before pick up. I'll get before and after pics up, as well as a piuck with the 45 first time its behind the rig. Should match perfectly.

Amazing how the 30 just dwarfs my Tundra. The truck has a 3in lift and 35s just for perspective.

Nice looking ride, Scott!!! Looking forward to seeing the updated pics with the new goodies installed. You will like towing with the 6.2L. :)
