She's fine, thanks, except for that she's hesitant to drive up there now. Has only driven to the cabin once since the accident. My 6-yr old daughter was in the car as well and was pretty unfazed by the whole thing.

True enough and the funny thing is that she'd be quick to agree. We had talked about replacing the MB with something else but after seeing how the car (and people) came through the wreck it was a no brainer to get another one (especially since she'll be driving it ;)). As far as my letting her... I guess I'm just glad she'll "let" me use it to tow the boat since I don't want a truck as my daily driver.

I haven't read the whole thread, but does anyone pull with a 197 with a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (aka LJ)? Mine is an 05 and the rated capacity is 3500. Dry I think I am 80 lb under the wire... Not my primary tow vehicle but top down runs to the ramp would be nice on a sunny day. Does it handle the boat ok? Towed with a 3500 limit vehicle before but it was a pathfinder and the lower limit was purely clutch related vs the slushbox version which was rated at 5k.

mzimme
05-29-2012, 10:18 AM
Not sure what your boat weighs, but I pull my 2200lb 83 S&S with a 4.0L Cherokee XJ. I don't have any problems pulling it up the ramp, and it pulls straight without any sway. My trailer doesn't have brakes either, and the Jeep handles it fine. I should also note that I'm lifted about 5.5" on 32" tires with no regearing. I wouldn't pull across the country with it, but to and from the lake or from my house to storage unit (20 miles) it does just fine. There's a picture of it a couple pages back I think. You said you're 80lbs under the limit... I'd be careful with that. Be sure to add in the weight of fuel, and all your gear that's loaded in the boat.

Were they still putting the 4.0L in the Wrangers in 05?

bdecker
05-29-2012, 10:34 AM
Yes, it's the 4.0 with the heavy duty 6 spd for the Rubicon package. Geared pretty low so I'm not concerned about moving forward in a straight line. Stability and stopping (trailer has brakes) are my primary concerns. Will try on a short trip. My longest tow is about an hour and can be done without touching the big highways.

mzimme
05-29-2012, 11:58 AM
I think you'd be fine. Why such a low tow capacity though? Wranglers are body on frame... does the hitch point not attach to the frame? The XJ's are rated at 5000lbs, and our wheel base is very similar, but I have the unibody construction rather than body on frame. I can't imagine yours would tow any worse than my XJ.

Our new tow rig- '12 Durango R/T. Haven't hooked it to the MC yet, but with a 7400 lb towing capacity, I'm sure it will do fine. We've had it a week, and have nearly 1000 miles on it. I hope that doesn't happen often. One of the most comfortable vehicles I've ever driven.

I have two EcoBoost trucks right now (one is mine one is inventory I have) and towing the X-25 loaded up they only get 9-11mpg. Boat, trailer, loaded is close to 6000lbs. It's slightly hilly around here up and back to the lake but gas milage isn't that great. It pulls very well though. On a 250 mile mostly highway trip yesterday with no boat it only averaged 15-16mpg.

Relative to last truck w/5.4-uses a lot less throttle accelerating or going uphill. Didn't track mpg as odometer is off after replacing 18" wheels w/20" wheels, which rendered fuel economy gauge inaccurate. Used gps calculated mileage a few times when not towing, was in 18 mpg range(combined city and hwy). Probably could get better mileage if I could keep foot out of ecu. :D
Physics dictates the use of more energy to move more mass, so any engine would use more fuel, the technology in this motor (direct injection, turbocharging etc) does a more efficient job.

Thanks, just got the X this spring and loving it so far. After looking at a lot of boats my SO and I just kept coming back to the 40th X.

MOPAR sells a hitch for the gen1 SRT. It's intended to work with optional "turn down" tail pipes that look like dog crap so I did the install myself and left the stock tailpipes. It's hard to see in the picture but I mounted my own "heat shield" on the hitch that keeps the wires/cables from melting. It works great and the SRT hauls the X no problem.

Eric,
I sure will. I'm in ND for work right now, but as soon as I get back home to Colorado I'll snap a few pics. The additional hitch is solid. I also tow a small Rockwood pop-up tent trailer behind the boat trailer on occasion and it tows awesome.

Doors off so you can direct more horsepower to the towing?!? I have an '07 Wrangler and I use it to pull my '95 Prostar 190. It can be an adventure. I am thinking that it is time for the newest Wrangler with 30% more HP and lots more torque...

Maybe even an automatic so that my wife will be able to pull the boat out of the water for me!

I would love to be able to pull the boat behind this but I think it exceeds the 60' lenght law in Wisconsin. (Truck is 22' long, trailer has a 32' box and is about 15000 pounds loaded not including the truck or ATV) = overall 56' +/-

It's kinda funny, these old Dodge trucks with the 12V Cummins have almost a cult following, especially the 4X4's. My guess is, it won't be easy to talk your neighbor out of his. With only 35K miles on it, it's not even broke in yet. These old Dodges are notorious for 6-800K miles, easy. Good luck though.

Yes, I thought the same thing but the Audi actually pulls it better than the Denali. I know it seems odd and the Denali is much larger, but the Audi seems to tow anything perfect. It must be the German engineering?

Actually, the Audi does a fine job suspension wise. If you respect your load, you can tow just about anything within limits. It has a 4400lb tow rating which is pretty good for something based on an a4/a5 platform. I had no temperature issues with the engine, engine oil, or transmission on my trip through the W.Va. mountains.

Thanks, but the video credits go to abehrens and h2oskijumper and their crew from Mohawk. I just had the pleasure of being in it and leading all those fine boats. I think I watch it daily!! :)

What do you guys think...Should I put the Tahoe away and pull with the Benz!!

Wich mercedes benz, we pull our 2012 x2 with a 2011 Mercedes benz E220 CDI break avandgarde, sport package exterieur, rear tires are 265mm width and front are 245mm with, torque 400 Nm, Don't have had problems with it, only on a verry steep ramp when we going to take tours with a couple of boats we put a friends toureg R5 in frond of it (400Nm torque too) but has 4wheel drive.

Hey Creampuff, I really like the matching colors!!! How did you work that out??

Is there a correlation between the color and the username? :D:D

Lol, I have a 1993 mustang coupe that I have raced for years and when I originally built it my buddy's always said that my car was a little creampuff and was all show no go. Then they all started calling my car creampuff. So when I registered on car forums everyone knew me as creampuff. As for the boat I did lean towards buying it since it did match my truck. My car is a creampuff my boat is a "vintage fixer upper" as another member called ;-)

2012 Audi Q5. I also have a Denali too so I split the time between both.

Where are you located? That X-2 looks just like the one we test drove early last year. I'm also asking because it looks like there is an American Boat Center sticker on it which is the dealer we use.

Yea those newer ones are a bit more traditional and I thought it made it look less dated

I took everything off it (registration numbers, etc) to take it to a fiberglass shop for a rather severe buffing - i didnt want them to go around stuff. so that was a good time to replace them.

Yep, and eh makes it sound like you're Canadian :D

New graphics make your boat look a lot newer than it is. Same with the trailer and wheels, what kind/year is that trailer?

Yup, that was me. Always looking out for my fellow Mastercraft owners !

I havent been out to Saguaro lately. We have been going to Bartlett. It almost seems like you have the lake to yourself out there.

its a 2006 made by Metal Craft here in SLC, UT. I added the wheels after and the MC decals to look official;) The orignal single axle trailer went kablewy on the road around 75mph AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH....wheel fell right off...no boat damage. Tandem from here out for me.:(
