How long do most steering cables last? I have a 91 with 400 or so hours on it and it feels like it is getting a little stiff. I have greased the fittings annually, but I am afraid it is getting ready to go. Also how hard is it to change?

I've got a 90 with 844 hrs on it, original steering cable, greased twice a year... Of course now that I say that it will probably break...

i have a 2000 Xstar and mine went out at 600 hours...it should have been changed sooner but you don;t realize how stiff it is getting untill you drive a different boat...for the price of a steering cable it would be worth it to change it every 3 or 4 seasons.(130.00 bucks)...some people say the are hard to change but they are not...just get some mecanics wire and tie it to the end of it than pull throught...than tie new one to it and pull back threw..if you have any other questions let me know..id be glad to help
