I just bought an X-7 and discovered abnormally stiff steering. It only has 54hrs. and it's a 2003. As a former Prostar owner and have had boats my entire life, I don't recall having to muscle the steering wheel just to turn! I lubed all the fittings in the Teleflex shaft and the rudder and greased the teleflex shaft. Still very hard to turn. Any suggestions before I take it into service?

90% sure you need a new steering cable. Pretty easy repair to do yourself, or take it to your MC dealer.

If you want to order the parts, I can have them shipped to you tomorrow from Chicago MasterCraft. 815-385-0880

But why would an 03 with only 54 hours need replaced? Shouldn't MC replace with only 54 hours?

If the cables have sat unused, ungreased, or in water eventually they will rust and stiffen up.

After replacing the cable, how long do the new ones last? Are they any better? I never had this prob with a few 'bus, and I assume that they use the same Teleflex cable???

I am not saying it is YOUR BOAT. MC did recieve a batch of BAD cables in 03/04. The boats where susposed to be recalled and have the cables replaced. With that in mind you might want to contact YOUR LOCAL DEALER...not MC and have them compare your hull # to the recall list. Then it could possibly be replaced under warr. The cable is a 4 year old cable. If the previous owner of the boat had a bildge full of water and it got into the cable...well the cable has gone bad. It is part of owning a inboard boat.

Hope this helps

:D I did it! Replaced the cable and now turns on a dime. What a difference. This was an easy job and got it done in less than two hours. Thanks for the input and thanks to Eric Koehler for a better price than my local dealer, even shipping from across the country! Chicago MC rocks!

Kmallen- If you pushed, he might have come across the country and put in it too. He has experience.
