steering cable needs replacing on this boat. Would this 19 foot teleflex work? http://www.boatfix.com/bykeywordnew2.asp?textfield=steering+cable&texttype=2 Is this the right size/type? If not, where can I find the right one?

I've read alot about the issue of early steering cable replacement on these boats from this forum an others. Seems like they are very succeptible to this problem, maybe from lack of proper maintenance? I've heard of one individual putting a type of boot or gasket over the end to keep the water out...see this link:http://www.boatfix.com/bypage2index.asp?page=524 about 6 up from the bottom there is a steering cable boot. Anyone else try this boot. I'm hoping to do this project myself without having to pull up the floor?

Also, heard two ways to thread the new cable through. The rope method where you pull a rope tied to the old cable from transom to bow then use the rope to pull the new cable through from bow to transom. Also read of attaching the new cable to the old cable at the bow end and just pulling the new cable through as you pull the old one out. Only have to make one pass through the floor and apparently it's easier to manipulate the cable through with the old cable versus a rope because the cable is more rigid? Any thoughts on this?

Welcome treptowr. This thread should answer all your questions. I just ordered a 19' teleflex cable for my boat, but I'm not experienced enough to know if all 19' teleflex cables are the same.

How did you know your steering cable needs replacing? I'm assuming my tight steering on my 2001 205V (same as your boat) is from a bad steering cable.

Keep me posted on your success!!

I know it needs replacing because it's really stiff, tough to turn. It seems like this is a common problem for this boat.

part number is 100861 for this boat. I'm curious on the boot as well, I just replaced the cable and don't want to have to do it again soon

Well, I just dropped my boat at the dealer with apparently the same steering cable issue (205V 15 Hours). Any ideas as to what causes this, and why the MC's are prone to the problem? What has the experience been of those who have replaced it? How long does the new cable last? Sounds like a design flaw to me. I have owned 3 Malibus and never had a steering cable problem (or really any problem)...? Thanks!!!

Hi Tim205,

What year is your 205V?

I agree that there does seem to be a pattern with the 205V's. I'm hoping it was just some quality issue with the manufacturer and by replacing the cable with one now should be a long term fix. Assuming the quality of these newer cables are better.

I have a 2001 BU Response and never had a problem with that.

MYMC, Erk,

Any ideas about this? Should these newer cables have less problems than the OEM steering cables that came with our boats?

thanks,
beatle78

To be honest I don't know of any issue with the older stlye cables. No one that I know of has acknowleged any defect. The current stlye cable has not been out long enough for me to give you a history...as of this time I have replaced none.

Maybe they only have a 5 year lifespan? I've seen quite a few with older x's asking questions. Replacing mine soon, It started getting stiff the end of last season. '02 xstar.

...or is it the routing that decreases the lifespan?

hmmmm...... I'm sure there are other MCs that use the 19' teleflex. Are others having this problem?

Perhaps it is the routing..... It's hard to tell since people only come to forums with problems and for advice. It just seemed weird that several people all at the same time with almost identical boats has the same issue.

oh well.... let's call it a fluke and since are MUCT better boat owners than the previous owners of our boats :) we'll probably be all set for years to come.
