View Full Version : Test Run--Overheated

I took the boat out for a test run yesterday. Water levels were way to low at the nearest lake. I fired it up and it started like a dream. As I was backing it off the trailer, I saw the temp guage spike. My stomach drops, I cut the engine immediately. When I raise the engine cover, I can feel the heat radiating from the block and saw a couple wisps of smoke. At first I thought I might have sucked up mud from the very low water levels, but I figured it was the impeller. Inspected the old one--sure enough, it chewed all the teeth off. Pulled the spare out of the glove box, reinstalled it, and she ran like a champ after that. I was just glad to catch it before I did any major damage to the engine. :) Everybody make sure you check your impeller before you go out and watch your gauges!

My impeller gets removed at the end of every season and then re-installed or replaced in spring....nothing to chance :D

Glad you caught it before you did any damage.

And carry a extra in the boat, just in case. I have replaced 3 on the water for fellow owners, who just refuse to "get it". Then they wind up buying 3, 1 boat spare, 1 home spare and 1 to replace mine.

And carry a extra in the boat, just in case....with some Lubrimatic-brand chicken fat for lube.

Nope, Go-Jo to lube it with and clean the hands. Lubrimatic chicken fat is the replace at home lube.
Go-Jo gets all down the side of the boat, but the fish have clean hands too!

Harold, the one you store in your boat, is it in the sealed packaging or in a zip lock baggie pre-lubed?

Sealed factory packaging and a tiny baby food jar of Go-JO to lube and clean the hands.

OK, you gotta be kidding me! I dunno, just the kind that hasn't got the grit in it's all I know. It's been in the toolbox forever. Just the old style original milky cream kind. :uglyhamme :uglyhamme :uglyhamme

Now this is some funny stuff. I better be nice!

Hey HB, you must be in invisible mode ... I'm concerned with your reference to having the "buddy part" covered - I just wanted to know what kind of go-jo soap Harold uses, then I was wondering if there was a MC part# so that I could see about getting some ... I definitely do not want to hear any water pump stories from you HB!

In that case, you better ask Jim@BAWS first! We can't have Advance Auto Parts selling MC replacement parts!

Ya see, Harold. This lubrication stuff is tricky business. We're not sure you're taking it seriously enough...

HB, on the other hand, lives, sleeps and dreams about it (along with his other two hobbies)...

You can say that again, I bet it has something to do with shampoo! Now that gives me a idea, about impeller lube!:uglyhamme
Then you would have cute little bubbles coming out the exhaust pipes, OK, let me keep thinking!
