View Full Version : MCX vs RTP 1

RTP 1 is rated at 310hp and MCX at 350 hp. They are both Chev 350 with vortec heads. I suspect the MCX will have a higher top end but will there be a difference in the real world of waterskiing and wakeboarding. Will the higher hp get the boat out of the water and up on plane quicker?

Does anyone here have any real world seat of the pants experience with both engines that might shed some light on the topic.

I think you mean the MCX.

I have not driven both but from what I heard from two different people who have is that after driving both, you will throw rocks at one.

YMMV

You are right I did mean MCX.

I have the MCX in my X-Star and it gets it out of the water really easy with ballast, 6 people, full tank of fuel with no problem. I would not want anything smaller on a boat that size.

Why don't we ask Mag Red to see what he thinks?

Didn't Mag Red have a problem with his boat order? Something to the effect that he ordered an MCX and got an RTP?

More power and a bigger smile on your face when you look at the MCX.

Why don't we ask Mag Red to see what he thinks? THe only difference is when you get the RTP1, you get about $2000 of additional skiis, vests, ropes, etc to help you forget the fact you didn't recieve an MCX. :D Performance wise..............absolutely no difference.......or very little in the favor of the MCX. Big Difference......The RTP gets way better fuel economy! You guys have great memories

I could get into this and give you data, facts, time to distance etc...but instead I'll post this picture and say buy the MCX (or larger depending on the application).

Mike........give us the facts....we can take it

Hey Mag were the props the same size and pitch when you compare the motors? I am left with the impression that the props could make a big difference in the fuel economy.

Lets just say 30ft/lbs of torque more for the MCX. If we are talking V-drive run that through the transmission multiplier of 1.52 for 45.6 ft/lbs more (roughly). And at wide open throttle it will burn about .3 gallons more per hour; however, it is 10-15% more fuel efficient throughout the operating range due to the intake manifolds "ram" effect.

On an average day in a 2007 X2 the MCX is 20 feet quicker to 30mph than a RTP-1.

Case closed...good grief can we archieve this stuff? You know in the dictionary under redundant it says see the word redundant.

Mike, what would be the option price for mcx ?

What hull are you considering putting this engine in? The 310hp TBI(Predator) is my SportStar rips, but the 310 HP RTP in my friends 05 197 is a dog. The new hulls are heavier and have more drag trough the water. When I upgrade to a newer hull I will get the MCX at a minimum. The when you have a RTP in a 197 you loose that sports car on the water feel I love about MC ski boats. The MCX in my friends 05 X2 is great, adequate in my friends 06 X-Star.

Depending on application (direct or V-drive) $2500 or $2700 MSRP.

Don't forget to add the 'slot! Another $1500 ish. But from my research, well worth it.

I have the RTP in my X-1 and it has plenty of power. It's true, you can never have tooooo much power, but in the smaller boats the RTP-1 is more than enough for most anything the average boater will do with it. I've had 8 people on my boat and had no trouble getting a large adult right up out of the water. Is it the fastest boat on the water? No. But it's not a dog by any stretch.

I luckily get to drive most of the new mc models mostly MCX's every year and in compairison i never felt my boat(03,x-7,black,rtp-1) needed more power, even in that short end of the lakes where the course is very close to the shore it still makes it to 34mph before entering the gates. With perfect pass, the rtp-1 handles the course just like the big fellow. And no-one of my multi-drivers was able to pul my arms out on the pull-out as i hate this the most(being yanked out, arms streched, back pain and all)

Hey Mike. What about the Big Block? What is your personal opinion regarding the Big Block? Is worth the money in an X-Star or bigger boat or can you just get away with the MCX? :D

You are very right! I have it in my 200 Mari. I dont regret not having it. My boat sat for a while on the showroom floor with no MCX being the reason for a no sale. I got a good deal as a result and I drove an X2 with it before, and could not tell a difference. However an X star- I think I would want it.

Exactly my thoughts. The TBI 350 vortec they used starting in about 1998 has a fantastic low end. This was the RTP until about 2004 or so when they went MPI with it. It's not that it's a bad engine, the newer boats just have a lot more wetted surface for it to overcome.

The reason I wanted the MCX was the intake was the same color as my Corvette........Magnetic Red:D They should paint them to match the boat color:twocents:

PVC Valve is out, looks like it's hanging by exhaust. Nice motor, do they come in blue or was that a personal project?
