View Full Version : Height of an '05 X-2 (Garage Clearance)

I was reading the owners manual to determine the height of my 05 X-2 with the tower collapsed. I believe the number listed is incorrect. Does anyone know the actual clearance required for your garage in order to fit an '05 X2 with the tower collapsed.
Any input is appreciated.

I have a tandem trailer with 14" wheels and it barely fits in my 7' high garage. MYMC pointed out to me the 07 single axle trailers ride on 15" wheels so the 05 single axle trailers might be a bit higher, too!! Folded, I would say it's 82-83 inches tall.....Hope this helps......

Here is my input, all sarcasm aside, don't trust the owners manual ... they can't even get all the gear reduction ratios or prop sizes correct

06 X2 will not fit through 7' foot door with out removing rear tower and hanging a leg over the side. I had a Prostar 205V with monster tower and it fit fine but th legs did fold inwards.
Best way to know is to back that puppy up to the door. Trickskier can get his in his garage.

I have an '05 X-2 and it only fits with the tower folded into the engine box (with the storage compartments and engine cover open).

Truer words might never have been spoken.
To the original poster, go out to the dealer lot and measure everything exactly. Big reason I have an X-1 in my garage rather than an X-2 is, well, because an X-2 won't fit in my garage.
We have an '05 X2 and a 7ft garage door.
Boat fits in the garage of the new house with less than an inch of clearance on the top. Old house had a 7ft door and a steep driveway, so we had to let air out of the tires to get it in. The angle of your driveway might be a factor for you too.
My boat does not ride on a MasterCraft trailer. We have a SportBoat Trailer for MasterCraft. One of those fancy diamond plate ones. Don't know if that makes a difference or not....

Being that the '05 X-2 is the same thing as the '06 and up X-1 -- I think any garage that fits an X-1 should fit an '05 X-2.
Thanks for the replies.

My 07 X2 will not fit through a 7ft door due to the speakers hold the tower up and extra couple of inches. I have to remove the top bar with the speakers which sucks. I am looking into having the header lifted another 6"

I have a 2004 X-9 w/ a single axle trailer.. I backed up to the garage door & I'm about a half an inch too tall!! I tried unhooking the trailer & lowering it down as much as I could & still no luck... I'm not going to give up though!!!

Can always lower the air pressure... that will give you a couple inches, then you can pump them back up once you make it in?

If your garage is like mine, you can remove the frame moulding (which I did) to buy an extra inch. Then just hold the garage door up a bit as you back in.

Great topic. A few thoughts/questions.
1. Is the boat hitting the frame or the garage door? Sometimes the garage door is not set up to go up as high as the frame/header. This can usually be corrected by adjusting the stop on the garage door opener. This may you Archimedes.
2. Does anyone have any experience with an 06/07 X2 with out speakers fitting into a 7' garage door?
3. Does anyone know the length of an 06/07 X2 with the teak platform removed and tounge folded?

It will hit the frame.

It will barely clear as long as the rear folding section of the tower will go flush to the rear deck.

Mine's adjusted all the way and I just clip the weather stripping on the door. No biggie.
I was looking at the X-2, but the one at my dealer sat much higher on the trailer than the X-1 and there was no way I was going to be able to squeeze it in my garage. It was also too long as well, but I can't recall whether that was due to it being on a Sportboat trailer instead of MC. My garage is just big enough to squeeze an X-1 into it with about 3" to spare lengthwise and 1" to spare heightwise.
I absolutely love the X-2 and if I lived on or kept my boat right near a lake, I would have chosen it over the X-1. But I personally don't want to trailer a boat of that size/weight very far around my region. An X-1 is already a bit big for the distances we cover.

We have to remove the speaker box from the tower too....forgot to add that in my first post. It's a pain to have to take them off, I understand your pain.

Pre-move Berryessa was our home lake. Sometimes Folsom, New Melones, Don Pedro and the Delta.
Now that we have moved, Millerton is our home lake and we are not to far from Pine Flat. We will still be trailering up to New Melones this summer and maybe Don Pedro.

Why so nervous to tow an X-2 longer distances? What is your tow vehicle?
I only ask because I'm pondering the reality of towing an X-1 with a 2006 Honda Odyssey. I am feeling like it will be okay for short distance. But who knows

What is the tow capacity rating for your Honda?
Braking is usually a big concern but with the new disc surge brakes it isn't near the problem it used to be.
Power to go up the hills in and around Portland may also be an issue.

No way can you tow an X-1 with an Odyssey. My wife drives an 06 Odyssey and it would never tow my X-1 safely. I don't think it would even tow it at all. The tow rating on the Odyssey is ridiculously low and the tow hitch is not class III. Don't even think about it.
My tow vehicle is an 07 Avalanche LTZ 4wd. It'll tow an X-2 but it'll struggle a bit up the steep hills and mountains around here. The issue for me about the X-2, aside from the fact that it won't fit in my garage, is that it is significantly wider, taller and heavier than my X-1 overall. For me, it just didn't make sense, since I travel anywhere from a moderate to a long distance everytime we're on the water. I also wanted the better slalom wake of the X-1. All that said, I think the X-2 is the best boat for the money in the MC lineup.

First of all, Honda makes the hitch to class III specs, but only rates it as a class II because the Ody is only rated to tow 3,500 lbs. I could also install an aftermarket class III hitch. Anyway, the hitch is not the issue...
I am really on the fence when it comes to the Ody as a tow vehicle. I figure the X-1 w/ single axle trailer is 4,000 lbs. Add a few hundred more for fuel and gear and you get 4,200.
The Honda Pilot has the same motor and tranny as the Ody. It's wheelbase is 12" shorter than the Ody. Why is it rated for 4,500 lbs. towing capacity??
In just the past few days of researching this issue, I've run across several folks towing with minivans (some on this forum).
Jesus_Freak pulls his Prostar 205 with an old Nissan Quest.
Wes pulls his Prostar 205 with a Ford Windstar (http://www.tmcowners.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=8557&page=5&highlight=minivan)
One guy tows his 4,000 lb. 26' sailboat with his Ody and has no issues whatsoever. (http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7486&highlight=boat) The X-1 weighs the same w/ trailer but is much sleeker.
Here's what I'm thinking...
factory class III tow package (includes tranny cooler, ps cooler, etc.)
surge brakes on trailer
weight distributing hitch
air bags in rear suspension to prevent sagging
local trips only (boat ramp is 10 miles away by 45mph highway)
Thoughts on this anybody?? This is key because if I can't tow this boat, I won't be buying it. The Ody is too new to replace. I realize it's not ideal for towing, but given what I wrote above, don't you think it will be okay for local stuff until I can replace with a Suburban in 2-3 years.

you can see from my photos what i tow with.......this is great.....but before i had the money to buy one....and with my other boats ....we used to tow with medium sized saloons....ok so long as you keeep the speed down and a very safe braking distance........
it was ok....but not great.......having said that, i would not swap my toyota amazon for anything...unless it was an aston martin vanquish:D

I thought the X-1 with tower, single axle and fluids and gear was closer to 4,500 lbs. than 4,200 lbs. And I wouldn't tow 4,500 with a truck rated for 4,500 lbs, much less something rated for 3,000. Note the ProStars are significantly lighter than the X-1. Also, as has been discussed on here recently, MC does not recommend weight distributing hitches with their trailers (someone referenced the reason being the effect on the operation of the surge brakes).
You may be able to limp down the road with the Odyssey, but it won't be a safe tow. Also, you may wind up burying your tailpipe on some ramps. I often have my rear wheels 1/3 in the water on ramps around here. On our Ody, water would be above the bumper on those ramps.
Not trying to be a bubble burster here, just trying to give you info so you can make an informed decision. I think you'll find that most everyone on here tows with something that affords at least 25% breathing room relative to their tow rating.

No worries. I appreciate the info. This is why I'm here... to make sure I don't spend $45k foolishly. It's a learning process for me. I appreciate your honesty.
My other option is my lifted 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (the one with longer wheelbase). It also has a tow rating of 3,500 lbs. But that makes no sense. The old Cherokees (discontinued in 2002) have the same engine and transmission (4.0L I6 w/ 4 speed automatic). Their wheelbase is 2" shorter. They weigh 400lbs. less. I'm sure the breaks are the same or worse (I have 4 wheel disc). Yet the Cherokee gets a tow rating of 5,000 lbs. I think I could easily use my Wrangler. I bet I'd have zero issues on the ramp (4Lo). With my lift, I doubt it would even sag. The only problem is the family would have to follow in the van since they don't all fit in the Jeep. That would be okay for local trips.
What do you think?? My Jeep is basically a Cherokee in disguise.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd personally go with the Jeep, but I'd still have some concerns with an X-1. Do a search on here re: tow vehicles and Jeeps. I recall some people talking about towing with their Jeeps and the pros and cons of it. The X-1 may be the smallest X series boat in the MC line, but it is still a big, heavy boat.
Tow rating has to do with so many things: frame, suspension, brakes, power, transmission, cooling, etc., so lower ratings can be driven by any number of things, some of which may not apply if you're taking short trips. For me, the keys would be: enough power and grip to get up a wet ramp (see funny thread on here with pictures of tow rigs floating away), more than adequate brakes (surge brakes help, but it still takes a lot of power to stop with a boat this big behind you), and stiff enough suspension so the rear doesn't squat or pogo. If you already have a hitch on your Jeep, I'm sure a dealer would let you hitch up a boat and at least check out the sag, etc.

I will be picking up my X-1 shortly and now I'm really concerned if it will fit in the garage. The old boat fit just fine in the garage. But trickskier's picture of his X-1 has me worried. I had the boat measured at the tower breakdown points. It is 6'9.
1. Is a 7ft garage really 7ft? My frame measured 6'9. So if trickskier's is 7ft then I am in trouble.
2. A dumb question -- Can you use the trailer jack (front wheel) to piviot the rear down - Push the rear in the garage, then put the front all the way down to gain some clearance? To get it in the garage?

My recollection was that the high point is either close to or right at 7' on the X-1 with the (-06) tower broken down, but I could be wrong. If you have a tandem axle trailer, I don't know if you'll gain much by lowering the front end, because the high point of the folded tower is right over the wheels. Also, I'd make sure you were on a really flat spot before you unhooked the boat and lowered the front end, or it might roll away...
I needed an extra inch so I just removed the top moulding off of my garage frame.

Archimedes -- I have the single trailer. So I would think I could use the front wheel to poviot the whole boat up/down if needed. I do have the molding also but I think mine is more like 1/2 inch. It will be the first thing to remove, if needed...
I was also thinking about a drop hitch. They make a drop as far as 5 inches. NOT that I would tow that way. But I could switch the hitch to the drop one in the driveway -- It looks like I have options. I just hope it fits.

Wouldn't just be easier to just cut out the header and raise up to a 8' door.
I just had this discussion with a builder/developer and I told him that a 8' door is much more practicial.
I think in the long run this would be the way to go.
Hate to be cought in a thunderstorm and trying to get my boat put away.

The Ody may have the same engine, but it is definitely not the same transmission. In 3 years of working at a Honda dealership, I have seen dozens and dozens of Ody trannies replaced, but no Pilot transmissions. The older Odyssey trans were definitely a lot weaker than the new ones, but I wouldn't recommend towing 4000 lbs with an Ody.
