We have our eyes on an 03 197. Give me advice on how it skis so I won't have a problem parting with my pretty girl.

I would seriously consider the 2005 PS197 that California Skier has... It was California Skiers owner's wive's boat and has 108 hours on its MCX motor. Comes with new boat warranties also! They were looking to let it go for about $40k OTD.

What are they asking for the 197? PM me if you don't want to post it.

Hi Erk..no price posted yet. What do you think?

I'll be interested to hear others' opinions if the 310hp holds its own with the hooked hull. I have not seen too many 03 and later 197s with Predator. Should be fine for slalom, I would think. Maybe not if you want to pull 1 or 2 footers well over 40....?.....

I am VERY happy with my Predator setup, but the 02 does not have the hook so it's pushing less hull in the water. Great holeshot, pulling single skiers/footers only (by law). It tops at 47.3mph / 4400rpm on a 14pitch 3blade.

Good looking boat for sure..... and a NICE 93 as well !

I'm really going to HATE parting with the '93. It has just become part of us after all these years. We won't budge for anything lower than $15k on her either.

My 197 re-propped with an ACME pulls to 44mph with footers. The prop ACME recommended put it into the proper WOT range as the factory prop was a little 'under propped'. I could still send it back to get it cupped and get a bit more out of it but I'm happy where it's at.

Seeing you have a family, you'll like the 197. I went from a 92PS190 to the 197 and really enjoy the open bow with having smaller children. They are happy to ride along on the dawn patrol footin' and slalom sessions on the lake (usually in their pajamas yet) and it gets them out of the cabin (out of my wife's hair).

I've been very happy with it for both slalom and barefoot.

betsyanddavid, is the S&S fuel injected? If so, there is NO WAY that I would part with the '93, NO WAY. And if I had the cash to buy it, I'd buy it from you. If it's NOT a fuelie, then I MIGHT switch. The 197 is nice, but I'd probably still keep the '93.

open bow for the kids has been great for us ... it looks like that d-ship has a lot of late model 197's and X-7's (2003 and newer) ... I'm not good enough to be able to tell a wake/spray difference between my neighbors 2002 190 and my 06 197 w/ the hook ... he has the predator engine with the 1:1 and it yanks me up pretty quick (I think he hammers it down just to see if he can pull the rope out of my hands:)) ... while I love the look of a closed bow, its just not practical for those of us with kids ... only thing I would want to know is if any of those boats have had their fuel pump replaced, as that was the years where many of us saw failures with tank shavings getting into the pump ... the newer pumps have allegedly experienced fewer failures ... anywhere from 200-300 $ if you have to replace it at somepoint. Good luck, I think you should be able to get 15+ for your SS

Betsy, I can't believe it. The new boats are sure nice, but yours is the one over which people can be consistently counted upon to drool on sight. Not to be considered a detraction of the new boats, I just think MC really hit a homerun with the 93 Stars & Stripes 190. When I saw "2003," I just new it was going to be another S&S for you guys. It's February, don't do anything rash. Summer will be here soon. ;)

Not fuel injected but we thought of changing it at one point. Maybe that is what we will end up doing in the long run. How difficult would it be to just put a new motor into it?

I went to the Indy boat show today and I too like all of the bells and whistles on the new boats, but like just like ETex said, don't do anything rash summer will be here soon, the bells and whisltles all come with a pretty price.

Go with the corvette LT1 or whatever is the current vette engine
You could also just put a powerslot transmission and running gear. How many hours on your engine?

betsy&david Harrison
02-19-2007, 07:36 PM
We have considered the LT1 because it was an option back in the day also cheaper than buying a new boat. The 93 has a little over a 1000hrs and 98% of that has been skiing on our lake.

Betsy & David,

I don't know you, but there's a lump in my throat regarding you selling your beloved S & S for a newer prostar. I don't think I could ever do that, unless you were getting into something alot different because of space (ie, v-drive).

I've been in the 197's and I use to own a '94 prostar, I don't think you're gaining that much of a different boat IMO. That '93 you have is so special and rarely seen it would be a shame for you to sell it, especially if you're the original owners. Who knows, maybe someday you can keep the '93 AND get a new prostar, best of both worlds.

Please reconsider, you can always modify your '93 with F/I or a new engine, like others have said.

#1 Give the 93 a fully clean up and shine. It does everything you need from a skiboat.

#2 Keep the money and get yourselves new skis for the new season.Way cheaper then a new boat!

#3 Great looking 93 !

hey Andre! Good to hear from you. David keeps this boat in tip top shape. Always clean. We have new skis and I'm thinking I'm going to talk him into a new engine. This really is his pet peeve about it. He loves everything else about it.

Betsy,
Last year I traded my '92 ProSport 205 for a 2004 197 with the RTP engine. Now my '92 certainly was not a Stars and Stripes boat, but I had it from new and as dumb as this sounds it was part of the family. My kids (10 and 13) were both on that boat at less then 6 months of age, and used to nap on the floor under the dash behind the swivel bucket observer seat. It was clean, and ran like a top. Other then having to pump it a couple of times to start when cold, I really had no issues with the carb on the engine. It was really difficult giving it up.

All in all, there was no reason to replace it other then a desire to go new, and get some of those "bells and whistles". The 197 has way more storage then my 205 did. The 197 is WAY more solid then the 205 was when I hit chop. The 197 skies substantially better then the 205 did. It was also a really tough decision to go from a paid off boat to a monthly payment.

It comes down to what makes you and David happy when you are on the lake. I honestly was never unhappy when I was in my 205, but I cannot describe how much happier I am when I out in the 197. For what it is worth, the 310 hp is plenty for slalom, I have barefooted behind it, but have not yet learned to deepwater start so, it was using a step off ski. It still has plenty of power once I was off the ski and footin. I have never tried pulling multiple skiers, but for me, that is not a significant issue.

Good Luck with the decision.

Steve

Tough choice. While I'm developing a pretty strong attachment to the old '90 PS190 with all the work I've been putting into it lately, those newer 197s and 190s are sweet. I could sure go for the extra room and the "bells and whistles." The main thing that will probably hold me back is the old boat is paid for!

Good luck, but no matter what you decide, you'll end up with a sweet ride!

I can't believe you're selling. :eek3:
But certainly understand the desire for space with kids.

Ladies and Gent's Betsy's boat looks like it is two years old max!
It is really hard to believe it has ~1,000 hours. I seriously doubt that there is another '93 S&S in as good of condition. David wipes it down after each set, and they have a carpet overlay to protect the OEM.

I sure hope someone takes just as good of care, and hope they appreciate it enough to pay you what it is worth. Good luck B!
