somebody abandoned a junker boat in our business park. who ever owns the building behind us i believe towed out to the street in fornt of my office. the cops havent towed it away yet and its been about a month. they have only left a warning tag. i actaully would like to keep this thing , fix it up and give it to one of my workers for a fishing boat. i called th PD and they said i'd have to have it towed at my expense, then wait to see if no one claimed it, then pay the tow yard for it. obviously that is not worth it to me. i would rather just take it myself. but what are the legal aspects of this????anyone know

In Texas, there's actually a statute about abandoned boats and reregistering them. I looked it up when I saw a sailboat on the side of the highway for several days in a row. No idea what the law in Cali is though. Check out www.findlaw.com

I don't know how it works on land, but if you salvage a boat at sea, it is yours, and you can charge anyone that claims it anything for the boat (within reason). Like I said, I don't know how it works on land. You should be able to contact the DNR and they can give you the "real" deal on what has to happen.

For POS's that are abandoned, it is really not that difficult to have the registered. You go to the DMV and explain that you have a homemade vessel and trailer and they will tell you what you need to do with regards to putting the ID numbers on the hull and trailer. As a kid, someone left an old 14' Lido on a trailer in front of our family's shipyard in Wilmington. I was able to get the whole thing register and then talked my granddad into having some of the guys in the yard repaint and re-rig it for me. When I sold it, had no problem with transfering the pinks either.

In Tennessee. Boat, refrigerator, it's all the same. No titles.

I was talking about the trailer.... If you wanted to do it legally, you could go to the DMV and request the owner's info and ask him for title on it?

Seems like the owner would be easy to find, all the registrations being there. It looks like a good little boat, if you squint, it kind of looks like an old CC!

This would look good on the side

That's not a Shell Lake boat, is it? She's a Beeaauuttyy!

Make a nice planter or sandbox- bury it about halfway up the gunwales and put a couple of boards along the top to sit on.
