Porsches have always been my favorite. A 911 Turbo is my ultimate dream car. In my opinion just can't beat them. Just something about a Porsche. Even the 1973 914 that I had was so much fun to drive. And although that car was truely a VW it still handled like it was on rails and sounded like a Porsche. talk about a ton of bang for your buck.

Just sent this to my buddy who is recently the proud owner of a 1980 911 SC. Fun little car to drive.

I think I read that the footage was shot from a Corvette.

Very cool, what a "drivers car"...great find and nice post.

When the Corvette guys start in...just wait till resale time. The gap isn't as big as you think............Chevrolet Corvette Coupe/Convertible
2002 MSRP: $41,680 - $50,430
2005 average retail: $30,300 - $35,400
Resale value percentage: 70% - 73%

And now for something entirely the same: the latter-day Corvette makes yet another best-of list. Yeah, yeah, I can hear it now. But trust me; I've driven 'Vettes old and new, and I continue to be impressed by the evolution of this automotive icon. One more area of excellence is resale value. Beginning with the fifth-generation C5 and continuing to the present, more guys are attracted to these cars -- guys who might otherwise shop the imports. With broadened appeal and a highly competent car, the Corvette represents the rare occurrence of a domestic car with exceptionally high resale value.

Porsche 911 Coupe/Targa/Cabriolet
2002 MSRP: $67,900 - $179,900
2005 average retail: $49,800 - $133,500
Resale value percentage: 70% - 77%

After four decades, automotive journalists are tempted to invent superlatives to describe the Porsche 911. Are there any adjectives that haven't been used to praise this car? Doubtful. It's the everyday exotic; one of the greatest sports cars to turn a wheel yet within the reach of mere mortals. From the time of its unveiling, the 911 has been at or near the top of its game in terms of design, engineering and performance on the track and street. And because most are relatively easy to care for compared to their peers, demand for used models isn't likely to subside. Even the most basic 911 is intensely satisfying, and among the best for value retention.

I don't think $106k is out of line for that car. I was thinking about trading my '03 M5 up to a new '07 M5, but the '07 is about $112k loaded. I was torn between the M5 and the GT3 RS.................

Ahhh...not so quick grasshopper...you happen upon our German friend during a moment of weakness. The water cooled years are a poor starting point when comparing values, particularly when looking at Porsches first mass market attempt on board a 911 based vehicle (first being the world beater 959 with just water cooled heads not discounting the 928 but really come on a front mounted engine, but I digress) the 996 is a nice car and all but did suffer teething pains, and poor acceptance from Porschephiles. Try using a 993 and let’s see where the numbers fall...

Further now that Porsche has had a chance to develop and ingrain the market I believe you'll see the gap go back to where it was...and has been for years. The Z06 is really the only car this country has that can come close but you can't drove it home and not need a kidney transplant!

Yeah...I knew they were going to screw it up, so I bought the '03, which was the last year for the E39 body style. The '06 came out with only SMG (no manual trans), and a fugly body style. Now in '07 they're offering a 6 speed MT, as well as a station wagon verson....mmmmm....500hp station wagon :D

Back OT...a friend of mine has a Ruf BTR turbo P car. It is absolutely awesome to drive. I've never driven the GT3 or GT3 RS, but he says that they've re-captured some of the feel that he's got in the BTR

Here's a pic of his car:

So of the two which do you feel is the better overall car? As much as I like that Ferrari the lines of that 930 are just so appealing to me. Just curious.

The honest answer? The 930 was sold...it had 20,000 miles on it and we were scared to drive it for fear it would get damaged and not be repairable...it needed to go sit in a collection or belong to a person that didn't care. It was replaced by a fire breathing 993TT with GT1 turbos...documented 500+hp at all four wheels and only 17,000 miles. It to has been sold...and yet the Ferrari remains.

The driving experience is like none other...the faster you go the safer it feels. The down force the shape creates only serves to force the car against the road more as the speed increases. This is the first car Ferrari designed in a wind tunnel. What is weird is how careful you have to be while driving her...the crowd that forms around you in traffic on freeways and in town can be dangerous at times. It is like driving a circus side show. When you park you can expect to walk out and find people taking cell phone pictures of friends and family leaning over your car. I have actually had a family ask me if they could sit in the car and take turns while mom, dad and kids took turns taking pictures. There is an old saying that a Ferrari is not a car it is a member of the family...I always thought this silly as I buy and sell cars to make money on the side to pay for airplane time, not so with this one. She is a member of the family and if you ask Maeghan or my son they would tell you the same thing.

Real world...The Z06 is by far and away the king value performance. For an '06 MSRP was 68,880 with the 2LZ package. So stock for stock, the Z06 is just about untouchable. Now add a few mods like long tube headers, Mild stage 2 Cam, Cold air intake, HP tuner tune, and of course 5 point harnesses, and guess what, you are still less expensive than the Porsche's, Ferrari's, etc, etc... And now you have a complete animal. If you own a Porsche less than the GT, don't dare race for pinks as you will likely be out 140K if the Z driver knows what he is doing.

That ought to get some flames a brewin'!:firejump:

357 rwhp and 349 ft lbs of torque at only 17 psi of boost with a weight of 2250#2250! You really put that 944 on some kind of diet. What was the stock weight?? You race in SCCA? Ever hear of Danny Popp? Tom Patton??

bret
02-04-2007, 08:51 AM
Yeah the 944 turbo went on a big diet! Gutted doors, all insulation, Lexan front and back windows, stock weight for an 86 was 3086. There is nothing behind the dash, ultra light seats, all bushings are spherical aluminum. It hasn't passed a GT3 but has passed a few older Z06's and some newer twin turbos 996. It's a hoot to drive and it's got Porsches big brakes on the front and 944 turbo front brakes on the rear with cryogenic treated rotors. The fun thing is, I have a partner in the car, and we built it ourselves.
