I have a question for you Chevy guru's. My wife has a 2000 Suburban that has a gas guage issue. Sometimes for no apparent reason, the needle pegs to empty and the "low fuel" light comes on. Sometimes it stays this way for a few minutes, and sometimes just a few seconds before returning to the accurate reading. The gas guage is the only guage affected. Could ths be a sending unit on the fritz or perhaps a simple grounding issue. If anyone has any ideas on where to look, I'd love to try it before taking it to the dealer.

Thanks!

Tom

Sounds like the sending unit but check your fuses.

We had a gas gauge doing a similar thing and it ended up being a symptom of a fuel pump recall. I'll try to find the info and post it.

There was a recall that P-hat was talking about, should fix the problem...I think. We had that recall taken care of on ours, but we never had your problem.

Here was the one that covered our Yukon...

http://www.recall-warnings.com/auto-content-32292.html

Make : GMC Model : YUKON XL Year : 2000
Build Dates : 19990801 - 20000731
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V155000
Date Owner's Notified: 20051019 Date Received by ODI: 20050414 Date Added to Databse: 20050419
Manufacturer's Involved: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
Manufacturer's Responsible for the Recall: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
Manufacturer Campaign Number: 05027
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 316508
Summary:
CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH FUEL MODULE RESERVOIR ASSEMBLIES THAT CONTAIN FUEL PUMP WIRES CONNECTORS MAY OVERHEAT UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS.
Consequence:
IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT WIRE IS EXPOSED, THE FUEL PUMP FUSE WILL BLOW, DISABLING THE FUEL PUMP AND CAUSING AN ENGINE STALL OR NO-START CONDITION. IF SUFFICIENT HEAT IS CONDUCTED TO THE PASS-THROUGH CONNECTOR, A HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR MAY RESULT, WHICH MAY CAUSE A 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' LIGHT TO BE ILLUMINATED DURING THE EMISSION SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE. FUEL VAPOR AND IN SOME CASES LIQUID FUEL MAY LEAK OUT OF THE FUEL TANK THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE CONNECTOR BODY. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. ALSO IF THE IGNITION CIRCUIT OR GROUND WIRE IS EXPOSED AND SHORTS TO THE FUEL LEVEL SENDER CARD WIRES, INACCURATE FUEL LEVEL READINGS MAY RESULT.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE FUEL TANK, AND REMOVE THE MODULE RESERVOIR ASSEMBLIES FROM THE TANK, AND INSTALL A NEW SERVICE KIT FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM LETTER TO OWNERS WAS MAILED ON MAY 25, 2005. THE OWNERS WERE RE-NOTIFIED ON OCTOBER 19, 2005, SINCE PARTS ARE NOW AVAILABE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

Might not help too much more, but chevy.org or chevytalk.org (can't remember which it is)? has a pretty good forum. You can sort by model year and search from there. I've reconciled many a problem with my Yukon by snooping around on there.
