Hey guys and gals, I do not raise a white flag and hopefully I am interpreting this new law incorrectly.

Under a new state law (RCW 79.60.660) it is now illegal to operate a motor driven boat or vessel teak surfing, platform dragging, bodysurfing.

I am assuming that Teak Surfing is different than Wake Surfing - lets hope so.

Here is a letter from the State of Washington's Department of Licensing to our local Malibu Dealer (don't ask why I was on their web site).

My question is: Do I need this sticker? If so, how do I get one?

Wake surfing is still legal. The law (actually, it's RCW 79A.60.660) defines what teak surfing, platform dragging and bodysurfing are. Wake surfing wouldn't fall under those definitions.

(4) For the purposes of this section, "teak surfing" or "platform dragging" means holding onto the swim platform, swim deck, swim step, swim ladder, or any portion of the exterior of the transom of a motor driven boat or vessel for any amount of time while the motor driven boat or vessel is underway at any speed.

(5) For the purposes of this section, "bodysurfing" means swimming or floating on one's stomach or on one's back on or in the wake directly behind a motor driven boat or vessel that is underway.

I'm just hoping the wally up by us who wakesurfs with an I/O survives next summer ... its bad enough that he does it, but he has kids that go behind the boat as well ...

Wake surfing looks like fun for about 1 day, I don't see doing it everytime I put the boat in the water. Of course I have never done it, but I have surfed for many years and cannot equate the feeling of dropping in on a twenty foot face on a ocean wave to a three foot wake on a boat without the drop. Just me, but give me Chun's reef on the north shore or Makaha (The fing best) westside on a six to ten foot day and that's better than anything (no need for a MC on those days).

I will have to dust off the old skills since I will be in Hawaii Feb 5-9 for buisness.
