I always thought that these were "big boat" items, but over the weekend I noticed that the local boat rental place installed them on all their boats. After some investigation, I see that they make a 12v system for about $600. I think that they would look damn cool on an MC. Has anyone ever done it or seen it on an MC?

I think I remember seeing something like this in the "bu" or Centurion catalog. If I remember right they used them under the transom in some configuration.

Yeah, most of the big boats have them at the stern, but some of the really big boys have them wrapping around the entire boat. I found this boat, which has just one light on the stern, but it really puts out alot of light.

Here it is out of water:

And here it is at night... pretty cool!

Look at the pic a little closer and you can see the water illuminated aswell from under the platform. I kinda like the idea of the transom light above the platform. Maybe MC engineering can find a way to incorporate some LED lights into the rear grab handle so that they look nice and you don't immediatly see a light affixed the back of your boat.

WOW...How about somebody come up with a battery operated light that is self enclosed? IMO, just screw it to the platform brackets and replace the batteries as needed. Would likely need a pretty strong battery, but that would be a simple solution. There are some smart guys on this site...anybody got an idea on how to make this work?

Might just be a simple switch on the light, kinda like one of those square night lights.

Or something like this

I understand... I guess if they are putting them in Mega-Million dollar yachts, they must be OK for a us!

When drilling through the hull of an MC... Is it solid glass all the way through, or does it have a foam core? (I am asking about the bottom or transom... I know the sides are solid glass)

Another thing I have seen is LED lights put under a teak deck. He actually custom fit the LEDs into holes he drilled in the bottom of the deck and ran the wire all hidden in notches up under the platform. He tied it in with the LEDs he had in the boat and it looked pretty good. The only trouble is the water in Texas is so dirty you could hardly tell what color the LEDs were. With the amount of LEDs he put on the boat you could see it from space.

Sodar,

My post was intended to be tongue in cheek. Not ripping anyone, just suggesting that this is a topic that probably reflects upon the time of year and how stir crazy we all get staring at our boats in the garage all winter.

But since I'm in the thread now, what exactly would the purpose of underwater lights be? Assuming you already have a depth finder.

And some just do it because it makes a cool glow... just like LED cupholders or LED's under the gunwales.

I guess it is no different than having the hole in the bottom of your boat for a perfect pass...If It is done correctly and the proper silicone is used on the inside and out side it should be just fine.

And make sure it's done right, Or depreciate the value significantly for the next buyer....
I like the looks, and I would certainly ski or board behind a boat with underwater lights.... Now, how about some underwater lights on the board for some 360's......:D Alright, I can't do inverted 360s, but I would learn if I had lights under the board.....

Many people have done custom LED installs in which they put several LED clusters under their swim platform. They way they did it I wouldn't mind...but I wont do it.

What I DID do was put a ton of lights behind the fresh air intake grills at the rear of my X7. I poked a tiny hole in the hose in the ski locker with the rear panel removed, ran a wire into each, put a dab of silicon around it to seal it and that was it. I use automotive style LED tubes in my boat now, simply because they come in cheap kits.

I have two 8" LED tubes in each that each can be whatever color I want them to be. I personally like purple, blue, or green depending on the situation (or in reality what my kids put it on...they have the remote control).

It is pretty cool looking from the back when you are swimming at night. In the water would be really cool too, but no holes for me thank you under the water line just for lights!

I think the lights are kind of neat, have been thinking about putting one or two on my boat. But, they do draw alot of current, 35 watts minimum per light, and do require pretty big holes. And how often are we out at dark and be able to use them for effect? All questions I have to answer before I shell out the $$$.

I don't think they would reduce the value of the boat at all, but certainly wouldn't make it worth more.

The big boats have them but they have generators and stuff...

LEDs draw virtually no current. I added 15 of them onto my existing courtesy light circuit with no problems at all. Thats 15 clusters, each with 6 LEDs.

I was referring to underwater lights, which are usually halogen-style (for brightness), not LED's which I know draw very little current. The kind you see at www.underwaterlightsusa.com.

Everyone in this thread has been saying they wouldn't want to cut holes in the hull. Well, with LEDs you don't have to. Since the current on LEDs is so low you can actually run the current through the swim platform brackets. You can put the lights up under the platform so they light the water. This is a really cool trick that works well. The only issue is the platform bouncing around can cause the connection to not be the best, however a little shake on the platform and you have a connection.

I did it on my 2003 myself. Here are a couple of photos. I used red and it didn't work very well to light up the water. If you used white LEDs I think it would work better.

I now have the MasterCraft underwater lights on my 2008 and they a really bright.

Just got back from the Arkansas State Boatshow. Saw the 40th anniversary edition X-Star. Sold on the first day, but it was still on display. Wow! Anyway, it had the underwater lights installed and they were incredibly bright. They were installed below the water line below the exhaust outlets. Each light has the wires come directly out the top of the LED. I drilled a hole through the hull just large enough for the wires to fit through. I then squeezed some silicone sealant into the hole and on the hull where the LED mounted. I then pushed the wire through the hole that was filled with silicone and seated the LED in the silicone that I preapplied to the hull. I then drilled small pilot holes for the two screws that mount the LEDs to the hull. I then put some silicone into those pilot holes. Once I put the screws in I appliead a layer of silicone over the screw heads and all the way around the LED where it contacts the hull. Then inside the boat I applied more silicone where the wires came through the hull. I used heat sealing butt splices for the wire connections. I then ran the wires up to the lower right switch panel where the ballast switches would be. Here is a photo from behind the gas tank where the wires come through the hull. I purchased the LEDs through a group buy here on the TMC site. I think the LEDs were about $10 a piece.

I was look at this company online, it's more high end LED lighting, but their stuff is super bright, I wouldn't doubt that they provide to MC?

My friend is attending the Miami boat show and checking out their booth and products.. the question is how much do they charge for a kit.

I think they put that 3 spoke wheel on all boats with hydraulic steering. Hydraulic steering is different than rack and pinion, in that it never lines up in the same spot, so a 4 spoke wheel might look misaligned, so they use the 3 spokes.

I think they put that 3 spoke wheel on all boats with hydraulic steering. Hydraulic steering is different than rack and pinion, in that it never lines up in the same spot, so a 4 spoke wheel might look misaligned, so they use the 3 spokes.

Ohh, that makes sense:o

You guys might want to try the hot tub industry. They use LED lights and light lens that should put out a lot of light and run off 12v. They even make LED that will give you as many as 15 different light shows.

I read you are not supposed to run with the lights on because it heats up the lense and when the water is re-introduced it can fracture it. You had any problems?

I recieved a email from the minnestoa DNR and they state that it is iligall to use underwater LED lights in this state for fishermen but it is ok to use for waterski boats heres the email i recieved from the dnr (The use of lights just pertains to fishing. As long as you do not have any fishing equipment in the boat, then the lights done matter. They are only illegal to use while fishing. ). just wanted to pass the info around so they know the state rule . but it is ok to use LED inside the boat

I too think the Ocean LED's are a better product, but there is no need. Ocean LED's are made for high dollar boats. I hate to break it to all of us, but ours are not! The Ocean LED's are made for boats that sit in a salt environment 360+ days per year.

The Abysslite is MORE than suitable for our application. Plus, the Ocean lights come in a bronze finish, because it is more conducive to a marine environment. I like the Abysslite for the stainless ring... it looks better for the 320+ days per year my boat sits on the trailer! :D

The Rule bilge pump that is placed in all new boats draws 4.0 amps, so about 3 LED lights could be run and have the same amp draw at 12 volts. The aquatik marine shower pump runs at 7.5 amps which is more amp draw than 5 LEDs lights... pretty sweet!

On my boat, my courtsey lights switch has 2 positions, up & down. My white courtsey lights come on when the switch is in the UP position, and the LED'S come on when its in the DOWN position. If I had underwater LED's, I'd wire them to come on with the rest of the interior LED'S.
Quick question. When buying the underwater LED's, do you order white or blue ones. All the pics I've seen, the lights look BLUE, But I was told that was just the hue of the water making it LOOK blue.

We just finished developing and testing a water proof transom LED that has the same specs as the Abyss LED in this thread... It will be a better flat surface mount design and it will be thinner.. They will be available in mid October in Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and White for less than $100.00 each retail.

ok from what i understand reading the literature... i need a 2 amp fuse in the power source... my question is... do i need a single fuse in the dedicated power line or do i need two separate fuses dedicated after the split?

forgot i found the answer to this question... grabbed my "electrical circuits" book from college and did a little figuring... just one 2 amp fuse will work for you in your main power source... i put mine in coming off the switch and then fed the power from there

Yes. I just had two blue ones installed and they look great. No pics yet but they are bright. From the research i did, they were the best bang for the buck.

Next time i'm out at night I'll try. They look really sweet especially when you are cruising since the deep blue illuminates all the white wash.

In meantime, here are what the bullet lines look like..

From the website and pictures I wouldn't get those ozniums. The beam is too concentrated and you can see from the underwater boat pictures you need 5 or 6 to get the effect of 2 normal transom lights. :twocents:

Crap I would need 12 of those!

As for the under water lights, I think if you use 4 ozniums you would be ok and for $15 each you will come out alot chepper.

from what little playing we've done w/ it... it won't give you a whole lot... UNLESS you put a bottle in there... we did something similar to my buddy's SANTE and we stuck a bunch 1 Liter Dasani bottles in there and it was dope... we put the strip lights around the bottom of his and shellac ed over them and it was cool but too much work for me and i figured there was a batter way

i ran across those and they're for sure sweet but there was another kind i found and they were flatter which made those choice beverage countainers ride better... i followed links on the "carbon fiber cupholders" (or something like that) thread on wakeworld

Thinking about putting some underwater LED's on my 2007 X2. I'm in fairly murky lake water(4' to 8' visibility). I have heard white lights are best in this situation, but am interested in blue or red. Anyone have advise about the differences? Possibly pics? Brand and model? Thanks for the input.

Justjoe
04-27-2010, 08:51 AM
With murky water you aren't going to get a whole lot of projection no matter what color you use. If you consider the bandwidth of the light, blue will project furthest, red will be weakest. There are alot of different lights available, check out your options. Some are WAY bright, and some look real nice on the boat.

I'm using the S600's in blue (I have two, wish I had four). My lake is clear.

Hey everyone.. its been a while, summer is on its way, so naturally I'm looking for last minute deals to enhance the MC.. I found some underwater lights on eBay, which seem to be among the most inexpensive I have found. They are a bit different style than others I have seen, but I think they will do the trick.. There is a "flame red" and a "white" as far as colors go. Does this look like its worth the money?

I don't think that's a very good deal for the A3 model. They can be had on Amazon and other places for less. From what I've read the A3 doesn't put out much light. There are some good threads on Wakeworld testing various lights.

I understand the red LED's do not project into the water very well, that is why not too many manufacturers offer them.
I don't know what I'm talking about, just passing it along.

I went with 4 bullet lines blue 600's.
finished install yesterday, don't know how they look in the water yet, but they sure are bright out of the water!

My buddy has 2x of the bullet white ones, they look pretty good in our dirty lake water, too.

for those of you who installed your own underwater lights, where did you wire it in? I wanted to use one of the dash switches for an option that wasn't installed, like the wash down, or shower switch on my 05 x star, but don't know where the wires are terminated on the boat if the option was never installed? Suggestions?

TIA

wakeX2wake

wire has to run up to the dash... there should be a ground bus up there for the ground and it was easiest for me to splice it into the back of the switch itself seeing as it is reasonably easy to get to... if im not mistaken there was only "+" ran to the unused switches also
