Is the big black cylinder next to the gas tank on a 1983 SS a fuel filter ?

If so can you still get filters for it ?

If it is old will it fall apart and send crap up to the carb ?

Should I remove it and replace it with a new style filter / water seperator?

Why don't you post a photo and indicate the cylinder you're referring to?

I agree, it was like 16-20 bucks at local carquest (did have to order it) DIM also carries them. I had difficulty getting mine off went though all my oil filter wrenches and some other less attractive ways before I found a good (thin oil filter wrench which spun it right off.

So you just spin off the black cylinder like you would do a std oil filter?

I ordered the filter last week and should get it today.

My 82 is a little different, it is located in the bilge.

There is a bolt on top you lossen to drop the canister.

Check the canister for internal rust, chances are there is some.Clean it out or replace the canister if it is real bad.

Oh crap, you had to point that out to me, it took my entire lunch hour to do that, now I have to go fix it.

Edit:
Fixed, it only took a minute. Thanks sizzler!

I thought you were going to say that it took you "forever" to do that. Wouldnt that be a little funny. It is kinda like the thread about the perfect pass, and the originator asked if anyone wanted him to "pass" the contact info along....har har. OK, so I have a warped sense of humor.
