Does someone know the years when MC has 4 fins on the bottom instead of 3 and why? Was it when the hulls became flatter and they needed better tracking? Seems like the 4 fin configuration only lasted a few years?

I didn't realize that there were MC's with 4 fins, as Rob Shirley IIRC was the one who started using them and there had always been 3 or less.

I never realized that, shows how much I know, since I have never had one with 4 fins, I never had to worry about polishing the extra one!

I believe my 92 had three and my 04 has three.

1998-2000. The early 98's had three. Then a running change at the factory....and then there was 4

My understanding is that the fourth skeg was added in 1998 on the prostar 190. The 205 in 98 still had 3 if I recall correctly.

/edit. Way late. Should probably read the whole thread.

The 1998-2000 Prostar 190 had four fins. This was part of the PPTS (Positive Pressure Tracking System) of that particulat hull. PPTS also included the winged adjustable rudder.

Here is a article about it.

I had forgotten that Rob Shirley and Kris LaPoint were hired as consultants to fix the problem hull.

No shampoo needed.

"The system works by maintaining positive water pressure on key surfaces of the boat's underwater running gear."

Sounds like a pretty important feature for a boat to have. :)

MasterCrafts Positive Pressure Tracking System

The Positive Pressure Tracking System was developed by MasterCraft design consultants Rob Shirley and Kris LaPoint to work with the 190's new ProWake hull.
The system consists of a four-fin keel configuration and a unique dual-plane rudder design. Research and testing have shown that a four-fin system, when used in combination with MasterCraft's new rudder design, provides significant increases in turning stability, tracking ability and skiing performance. The system works by maintaining positive water pressure on key surfaces of the boat's underwater running gear.
WaterSki was able to test-drive one of the first production 190s to be equipped with the Positive Pressure Tracking System. We felt that the new system allowed the boat to remain flatter during turns and also enhances tracking and towing stability.
MasterCraft is offering the Positive Pressure Tracking System on all ProStar 190 models, yet is not increasing the retail price of the boat.

i am assuming the hulls before 1998 were not the "problem hulls" referred to earlier, but just the new hulls in 98 needed the PPTS to fix them.

thanks for the article and good information once again!
